I love this channel! Nothing like unapproved parts! :-P Very cool! You know I'm just F-ing with you right?

Yeah, I know, got to be careful, but this is just good engineering practice I think, comes under the heading "discrete use of shims to maintain correct fits and clearances"

Your spindle runs very freely - a symptom suggesting spindle bearings needing a tweak.
I don't think my bearings need tweaking - with the front gear lever in no gear, with the big 3-jaw chuck mounted and rotated so the chuck key is at 90°, the chuck does not rotate but a downward nudge on the chuck key and the chuck rotation accelerates !
    All very precise measuring :)
Doubleboost nipped his spindle bearings up and said it resolved a lot of chatter issues. (OK I nagged him on seeing his free turning spindle too !)

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if the spindle bearings had lost their preload over the years. I'll find time to investigate one day!

Can't help thinking the camera issue is down to the lathe not being rigid on the ground and the cam's picking up the vibes.
Other option is to turn off the OIS on the camera and see if that works better.

I might just get a more substantial tripod, the one I have is very cheap and nasty

I've spent too long working on American stuff, I can only call swarf chips and aluminium aloominum.
