I served in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive & would watch "Puff, the Magic Dragon" rain down bright red tracer fire at night. "Puff" was the name given to the original AC-47 (DC-3) gunship & then used generically to refer to all AC-47 gunships. Many of the USO bands entertaining the troops would play the song.

Many years ago I saw them in concert when they played a benefit in Oklahoma City for recovery after the federal building bombing. I'm 71 and I listened to this as a child. I've never heard this particular rendition before and I was crying. You need to listen to "500 miles" by this group because it is so moving. The 60's had everything from folk, to folk-rock, to synthesizers, to hard rock and the beginnings of metal. I still miss the "Leslie" amplified speakers on the organs of the 60's. The peculiar warble of that amplified speaker is beautiful to my ears.

Stookey wrote "The Wedding Song", to which many couples have been married over the years.
He is now to be among you
at the calling of your hearts.
Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part.
The union of your spirits here has caused Him to remain
for whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name

I had a friend who's wife had a son who died around seven or eight years old. He said he could not play this song in their house because it was her son's favourite song. I didn't pry into the details but I always suspected that the lyrics, 'A dragon lives forever but not so little boys' was probably the part that would tear her heart out. Nice reaction.

This song has been around for so long that the first generation to hear it is now playing it for their great-grandchildren. YES, it has been that long. And they all still love it. It hits one way when you are 5 and totally different when you are 35. So many memories and emotions.
In case you don't know, when "Puff the Magic Dragon" was originally released, some thought it was a drug culture reference. All you have to do is listen to the final verse, it's about growing up and putting childhood behind. If you ever wondered where the overall plot of "Toy Story" came from, it's the same idea.

Such an awesome song. So frickin' full of emotion. I grew up singing this. Even as a teenager, I had no problem singing this song, especially sitting around a campfire up in the canyons as we cooked stiff in Dutch oven and made S'mores and we were teenagers. Such magical memories
When I was 15, the TV show came out and my family watched it, all 11 of us.
Then when I became a daddy, I sang this song to my boys, only had sons, when it came night night time. Bought the book to read to them while on trips or at bed time. Wore the book out. The boys memorized the story and took turns "reading" the book to each other. The also wore out the VCR.
After my second divorce, when I got my two youngest sons on the weekends, they were 3 and 4, I would take a couple of daughters of a single mom along, and spent Saturdays doing things with them. First thing they wanted to do when the got in the minivan was put the DVD in and listened to "PtMD", "Witch Doctor" by the Cartoons, and "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha" several times. Sidenote: I blubbered walking each girl down the aisle, I became their step-in dad.
Now their kids sing those songs and everybody joins in, except the "Ha Ha" song. My exes and the girls" mum still think I was sick to teach them that song when they were young.
Maggie, thank you so much for bring back those memories. ❤

I was in my first year of life (born September '62) when this came out in January of 1963, and I remember my older brother (he was 8 when I was unleashed upon the world) singing it to me as I got older, and subsequently, to my younger brothers as each of them came along,,,it's one of those songs that transcends time. It always had myth and mystery surrounding the true meaning, no matter how many times the group would explain it,,, I guess it'll forever be one of those things that people will always put their own interpretation on...🥴
I sang it my kids, and my eldest son and his wife have sung it to each of their brood. I hope it will live on in the hearts and minds of generations to come... 🥰

They had a lot of great hits such as "Lemon Tree", "500 Miles", "If I Had A Hammer", "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Day Is Done". They recorded quite a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Blowin' In The Wind", "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "When The Ship Comes In" etc.

Thing is, this song wasn't part of my childhood, but listening to it, it was. It just has that quality.

I would imagine that this is the dream of any performer. To have an entire audience literally in the palm of your hand.

When you are soo good at what you do, and do it with love and respect for the audience this happened.

WOW Mr Peppermint use to sing this song often on the TV show back in the 60's and early 70's. LOVE THIS reaction. Can you also do This Land Is Your Land and Blowin In the Wind by these three??????

The opening joke was that the parents had an urban myth that "puff" referred to smoking reefer.

I'm so glad you played this version of it the author of the song Peter Yarrow explains In song why they sing it earlier in their set and explain a little bit about the song...Because Peter wrote the song he is affectionately known as " Puff s father "... I'm 67 years old and I remember this song in my childhood when I was 8 or 9 years old... Even back during those years Peter Paul and Mary was one of my favorite folk groups of the day and I believe that all children that heard that song immediately loved it... I know that I did... It was a little sad seeing Mary travers singing Because we all loved her so much and we lost her a few years back to cancer.. The guys left it up to her whether she wanted to sing even while she was getting cancer treatment or not and she wanted to be with them singing as long as she could... She gained weight and lost her hair and was on oxygen and sat in a chair but she was with them singing on stage...Maggie, thank you for turning back the years for those of us that listened to this beautiful song in the '60's... It was nice to listen to this and remember when I was a kid ... Great reaction...Keep Being Awesome !!!...

I know we ALL leave our childhoods behind us . . . . but who says we HAVE to? If more of us kept in touch with our childhoods then maybe the world would be a better place for it.
