- DISCLOSURE: I am very grateful to be a Dexcom Warrior, and as such they provide me with the CGM without charge. I am not paid to talk about Dexcom, and my opinions - as ever - are mine, allllll mine.
So today I talk through inserting the Dexcom G6 CGM! As usual it goes without saying that I'm definitely not a healthcare professional, so please do seek advice from your diabetes care team or the Dexcom team if you're unsure about sensor insertion.

Thank you for this, I am moving from the G4 to the G6 today and knew that I would no longer need to do the calibration finger pricks but when you reiterated it I surprisingly felt pretty emotional about it (diabetic for 34 years). I have been using the Dexcom 6 for a little while after doing sugars for 50 years and testing 8 times per day, sometimes more. It definitely is a blessing to be able to have this to use. Who would have ever thought !!! So much like the video it is a blessing in disguise. Even though I have an A1C of 6.9, which is quite an accomplishment for a Type 1 Diabetic, now my doctor is wanting me to do an Omnipod Dash to make me even more stable then depending on my seriousness of my disease! I just completed my insertion of the 2nd set of 3 days, but like the video was saying it is a large apparatus in size that it makes me feel like a freak because I do not wear sloppy clothes and it is much easier to see something there unlike the Dexcom G6. The Dexcom G6 blends in quite well with what I wear and is very comfortable! I do have a 30 day trial on the Omnipod Dash so I'll see what happens closer to then on whether I want to continue it or not. I will admit it has been keeping me from having low and high blood sugars better. It is an important disease of life and death and if you value yours the new stuff that they have came out wouldn't be recommended if it wasn't worth the try. I just have to get past the point of not wanting anyone to ask questions if they notice that there is something sticking out on me and start asking questions! With the Omnipod so far, I do pull out my shirt from being tucked in so precisely so that it also covers up the love handle that I can't seem to make go away!! Have a great day! I found this video because I was trying to make sure it the Dexcom G6 made a difference in Blood Sugar numbers if it was put on vertical vs horizontal. Not for sure that I have really found the answer on that completely. THANKS FOR SHARING THOUGH!! You're a really good and confident instructor!!
We found your video very encouraging. Our 13 year old son presented with type I last year, after a ride in the life-flight helicopter and many sleepless nights (another sensor that helped us sleep better) and finally ending up with an amazing pump and newly installed programing that helps keep his blood sugar in normal ranges (interacting with the dexcom g6) we have discovered a new problem called "dexrash". He can't even wear his sensor for a couple of days before he has a rash that can only be compared to a serious burn. Right now we are considering going back to waking up in the middle of the night to check and checking with finger pokes throughout the day to keep his blood glucose in check. We have had to buy extra sensors because we have either had to remove them because of the buildup of moisture and burn/rash or he is inadvertantly removing them in the night because he is itching while he is sleeping. This is proving to be very exensive. After some research on the internet (and because our boy's mom is a certified wound care nurse) we have tried: Skin barrier, tegaderm dressings underneath, and flonase. Some of these things seem to help but he is still having trouble with the "glue" it just doesn't like his skin. Our son weighs about 93 lbs and he doesn't have a lot of fat and a lot of places to put the sensor on his body. Any ideas? (incidentally, the glue on the pump unit doesn't seem to affect him at all?)
Hi Jon! I'm so sorry to hear about this, that must be so frustrating when you can see the benefits of using the CGM. Have you asked around on Twitter? I know that this is a fairly common experience but not one I've had myself - although it sounds like you have done a lot of research. Have you given the Freestyle Libre a try to see if the adhesive is better suited to your son's skin? Those burns sound very painful! I'm pleased at least that you are having success with the pump - it sounds like you have an amazing understanding of a very confusing condition after only a year so huge respect to you for that. @@JenGrieves Thanks Jen for responding to us. (Yes the first sensor we had was the libre but honestly we got it from a friend and it isn't actually approved in the U.S. for kids under 18!) I think our pump only interacts with the dexcom (I may be wrong). I'm with you, the education for diabetes is sadly lacking, but our son Nathan is amazing and he has taken the bull by the horns and we are extremely grateful that we have the tools that we do to take care of this. I just got this going 10 days ago, after 15 years of sticking & flexpens. My first sensor hurt a LOT lol, I was told that was bad luck. I was looking for video of people's recommendations/methods before changing sensor now, and came across this. Thanks for the video, very useful!

I have had a similar experience. Sometimes I feel like I just hit a nerve with the sensor cable. But mostly, a very painless process and just feels like a sticker.

I have followed along with this video.. hitting the button on 3 every single time, for probably 10 or 11 sensors now! I’m so glad the Dexcom sensors don’t hurt. The Medtronic ones used to bring me to my knees!
I’m about to put this on my 9 year old son and this video helped for sure. Thank you! I was nervous, but this seems like a no brainer move in managing T1d especially for kids who hate finger sticks.
Greetings from the USA. Thank you for your demonstration. Very helpful to me as a 1st time user and aged 71 yrs old. Hated finger sticks. And you are soooo right. Didn't feel the sensor needle at all. Looking forward to this new G6, so is my doctor. I never kept very good records for him. You look very trim and have many options to where you can put it. I am very obese and hope the sensor works on the fatty areas for which I have aplenty.
My son just got the G6 after years of frustration with the G5 (false readings, like 200 points off type readings). You video was a HUGE help. Appreciate your channel and all the content I just found on it. I am a new subscriber!! THANKS AGAIN!
Hey, Thanks Jen. I am a freestyle Libre (and Miao Miao) user. Had a G4 back in the day but making the switch to G6 in the next month and wanted to refresh my memory. It sure does look loads better that the G4 and G5 applicator and insertion of the sensor.

Thank you for this video! Your video elevated my concern on if this was going to hurt or how easy it was to put on. I have stretch marks and I placed it near one, but it could have been on top of one..lol! I still did not feel anything upon insertion.

LOL So glad I'm not the only one that made the association at 3:07. It really does look like a handheld vacuum cleaner.
Also, the lack of finger sticks really was something. I switched from the Medtronic 670G and its Guardian G3 Sensor (which I would never recommend). The only time I did finger sticks with my G6 was to verify that it was accurate (far more so than the G3 Sensor by Medtronic).
Make sure you calibrate them after inserting . They are usually way off to begin with but great once calibrated .
This presenter states more than once that there is no need to calibrate
Doesn't matter what the presenter says , I've had them off as much as 30 with my patient .

You are not alone, I use to put the sensor upside down 🤣🤣. Great demonstration.
Once I did rush and bleed when putting on the sensor.. once I went with the process more methodically, I did not bleed since.
Just starting with the Dexcom. I don't understand what is meant by "upside down".
I could never do finger pricks with the decomber and only checked my blood sugar when I really felt bad now I've got this in the mail let's see how it works
Awesome video and information. Question about when inserting on the opposite side? Do you flip the inserter over or use the opposite hand or do you just do it like in this video and just move it to the other side of the abdomen. Always been curious about this. Sorry if it was difficult to understand… it was hard to explain lol. Anyone? Thanks
Thanks for this video. I, like you are a type 1 diabetic. I have been a diabetic since 1984. I also have developed insensitivity to hypos. I am hoping the Dexcom 6 will make a difference as doing even small tasks is nerve racking and I like you just WANT TO LIVE MY LIFE and not be scared all the time. I have used other sensors before but this is my first Dexcom. Fingers crossed I get this right. Can someone explain what an omnipotent dash is? Is it a pump? I dream about getting a pump to avoid sever hypos. Thanks again M
Can you take baths with it ? I just got mine through my pharmacy and they said only showers? Also im about to chat out my first sensor so it was great to see a live video! Way better than app tutorial

I started using the G6 last month. Am on the TslimX2, which is the pump that communicates with the G6, so it stops delivering whenever my my blood sugar is dropping too rapidly. I suppose that is the advantage to being on a pump that happens to have a tube, even though I would love to be on something like the Ominpod otherwise. (Insurance in the US is a never ending maze!)
Hi Carol, access to pumps comes up repeatedly across different countries. In the UK I just got lucky with the Omnipod - lots of hospitals don't offer it but my one happened to, which isn't a great system at all. I've heard great things about the Tslim do you like it? The communication with the G6 sounds like a super beneficial feature to have.
@@JenGrieves Yes, I love it! (I've been off TH-cam over the holidays.) It's been great knowing that I won't go quite as low for quite as long. I have been having some infusion set issues of late due to a bad box, but they have sent a new one, and I have two more boxes until the replacements arrive, so that's good.
I love dexcom but due to cost I could not continue with it. I had to search for the other device which could give me all features but at the cost effective price. I found Libre and using it with Nightrider Blucon. It has all the features of Dexcom. If I'm not wrong Blucon has more feature than Dexcom

Thanks for this. I’m switching from Freestyle Libre to Dexcom G6 because of my crazy insurance decided it didn’t want to cover it anymore. Also, the last few freestyles have either fallen off or simply stopped working just a couple of days in. Have you noticed this problem with Dexcom?

I'm about to choose a CGM system, and I noticed in your vid that you show a shoebox size wrapper that holds just 3 units... 😵 I travel a lot, and carrying all that seems really unpractical.. are the applicators single use?

Hi! They are indeed single use, their size is slightly unfortunate! But I am someone that travels abroad for extended periods for work (the last trip was nine weeks) and once they're out of the shoebox they are still sealed and wrapped, so I have managed to take them all in my hand luggage (along with the rest of my supplies) and been ok. On the plus side, coming back through security at the end with an empty backpack is a joy! 😊
just got mine and I'm scared.. I think I can.. a first-time user. I have used a Medtronic pump for years. I'm not diabetic BUT I don't make cortisol. I too want to track patterns in my blood sugar. I giggled "over" shape... Then around time: 5:14 Was the vacuum sound a giggle comic item? It was great! This video gave me some confidence. Thanks! From the USA.
Enjoyed this as usual. I'm using Libré, free on prescription here in France with MiaoMiao & Ticwatch Pro watch. Have a come & go cold at the moment & go HI, but Libré goes crazy when much out of range & that drives me mad! Hence my research. G6 looks great other than the wait & I understand it is more accurate than Libré. Thank you SO much! 💖Village fête on Saturday so may try an Omnipod Pig-Out!

@@JenGrieves I love the Omnipod. However, its time to change in an hour beep always surprises me-3 days flashes by. Expected to be up to 100% this morning BUT LO since 3 am so have adjusted basal 3-7.30 am & hopefully OK now. Feel so much better ALL the time since Omnipod. I think the healthcare in France is amazing with the nurse visits, Omnipods, & Librés all gratuit. You spoke of privilege & I am, having the 'wit' & resources to be so pro-active with my health. This was so clear when in Bordeaux Hospital-no awareness of low-carb or cgi foods-surprising. Being able to gallop up & down 4 flights of stairs, thanks to Libré & MiaoMiao, to get in target for discharge was so good. All the best, Roger😎💖 Now for some rotovating!😉
How do you become a Dexcom Warrior? I've been on G6 since the start. I can't fault it. It's never skipped a beat which is extremely important as I use a closed loop openaps system.. Maybe that's something you could cover in the future?... It is the future!

This is the first one . I want to know how to change from putting it on at night to putting it on in the morning.
I love it, it’s so unobtrusive and I’ve heard the accuracy is fantastic, it’s too pricey for me at the moment though.
I’ve got a random question for you, I hope I don’t sound too dim, but what happens to the insulin in your Omnipod if you take a long, hot bath? Can the heat ruin the insulin? I’d love an Omnipod, couldn’t deal with the tubes from other pumps, but worry about random stuff like this, I’d hate to have to give up my baths ☺️.
Hey Sarah! Not a dim question at all! The Omnipod has an IPX8 waterproof rating - which is waterproof at 25 feet for up to an hour, I'm not sure about the heat but I've had no problems in saunas in the gym etc. I'm more of a shower gal but I gym and swim and get in the sea and all of those lovely things. I have found some of my pods have thrown a wobble in extremes of temperature but I'm talking cycling at 15mph in freezing temperatures, but the Omnipod will let you know if that happens (you can't escape that alarm!) and it will just need changing, but that's been a very rare occurrence for me. If you're really worried you could time it so that you have the bath and then change the Omnipod but I think it would be more just a case of giving it a go and I would be very surprised if you had a problem. Hey girl! One sensor (10 days) is £51.25 and one transmitter (three months) is £200, or they have a subscribe plan which is £159 per month and keeps you going with everything you need for a full year, although you have to sign up for 12 months. Admittedly not cheap but it's getting cheaper which is a positive. Previously I've 'splashed out' on the Libre (or Dexcom) for just a short period of time rather than ongoing, just to try and spot patterns and help me make tweaks, which has definitely helped. @@JenGrieves that's not as bad as I thought. I pay about £100 a month for libre at the min. So used to a sensor now I'm terrible at keeping up finger prick tests! Any thoughts on it compared to libre? Maybe a pros and cons video for both would be useful.

Thank you for your video. I just got mine and have yet to start using it. Since I watched your video it has given me more confidence and I will be starting mine on Saturday. Have you found any discomfort when you sleep and maybe sleep on the G6? I sleep on my side and am afraid of sleeping on top of it. I tried another CGM and the pain from it made me rip it off after a day. I am now returning to try the G6.
Hi Kiel! How have you found the Dexcom so far? I haven't found any discomfort when sleeping, but I mostly sleep on my back and also I wear the Dexcom more on my torso so I haven't really put pressure on it at night. Has anyone had the problem of highly irritated skin under the adhesive of the G6 sensor? I have gotten a nasty rash and itching from the adhesive, looking for a tried and true solution.
Hey Jim, I know a lot of people recommend spraying with nasal spray or using an adhesive barrier like skintac.
Where did you buy the decomposition
can you do a video on how to tighten and loosen a bolt? Anything. more information than others in less than half the time. 😁
How often you have to replace sensors? I worry they’re quite pricey
The G6 is brilliant! :-) GREAT VIDEO AGAIN Jen! fOR ME THE g6 IS AS GOOD AS A BLOOD TEST! fOR ME it is! I did try G6 in the arm which was a mistake as I found out with it hurting and after I contacted Dexcom I nicked name to
mine (Dexxy :-))they said it's not been tested on the arm and as my results showed the readings were terrible too in the arm. so for me best to leave in the belly. I will also note that I had an accident and broke my neck and found out if anyone as to go for a MRI scan that the G6 needs to be fully removed not just removing the receiver which I was hoping but yet again Dexcom was very supportive and sent me a new one to my hospital ward which I was really pleased with the customer service at Dexcom! cannot ask for! I just hope too now that Dexcom can be apart of Xdrip and spike as I personally find the software a lot better to use all round and visual too for me.results are excellent too with xdrip. I'm not in the least saying Dexcoms software is rubbish it's just not for me and my 50 years of T1. I also noticed from the G5 that its a lot quicker at picking up a fast low blood sugar which in return helps you to get out of them dreaded hypos. Another tip for me too is to use Gluco Tabs as by just having 2 tabs at 8g and get you out of low blood sugar and also not spike you like most other gluco gels! I just wish I could use the Omnipod®

So pleased the G6 is working for you, I've definitely found it a gamechanger in my diabetes management - I'm able to make better and quicker corrective decisions which is hopefully going to benefit me long term. Great little gadget
"You don't need the device, you can use your phone." I WAS a Medtronic Guardian user, but my phone updated, and now it doesn't work. I suspect this is entirely possible with Dexcom's phone apps. That un-sexy receiver is the reason I am switching. Because it is THEIR device it will NEVER stop working overnight like mine did.

Do you find the G5 painful to insert? Are you moving to the G6 soon? I can barely feel it, but I also didn't find the G5 painful so I'm probably not the best person to say! I hope the upgrade is better for you, it's such a great bit of technology isn't it.
@@JenGrieves it's honestly a toss-up for me with the G5. Sometimes it's perfectly fine and others times it's not. I currently have some G6 sensors but I'm waiting for the transmitter to arrive!

Hi Jen. Your video of the insertion of the Dexcom G6 was great. However, it looked like you inserted the new sensor close to the bottom of your ribs. I was told by my diabetic educator to keep it away from your ribs and go to the fatty part of your abdomen which for me is just across from my belly button. I was also told directly from Dexcom that it is NOT recommended to use your thigh for the insertion of a new sensor. Please respond to me with these concerns I have stated. I just started with the G6 as of last Wednesday, November 3, 2022.

They honestly need to make these things lower to the skin and more user friendly. Just another example of manufactures who put out products and don't actually wear them. I know people get excited about this super expensive piece of big pharma and it does have certain advantages, but truly feels a decade late. With so much technology on the market, diabetics need to insist that the cgm keep up.

You wiped the alcohol very poorly, you really should wipe in a spiral starting from the center and working out, alcohol does not sterilize the area it just wipes away the bacteria from the skin. If you wipe it in the sort of checkered hashtag way you did it in the video then you are potentially putting bacteria you wiped off back on the site area. Not trying to be obnoxious but im a nursing student and type 1 diabetic myself and i have seen some patients with nasty cases of skin infections from improperly doing injections and putting sensors incorrectly.
Interesting point, they definitely don't share that at the Dr. offices!
