Conservationist and TED Fellow Moreangels Mbizah studied the famous Cecil the lion until he was shot by a trophy hunter in 2015. She wonders how things could've gone differently, asking: "What if the community that lived next to Cecil was involved in protecting him?" In a quick talk, Mbizah shares the state of conservation in her home of Zimbabwe -- and why she thinks that communities living with wildlife are the ones best positioned to help them.

I think this is type of conservation is key, wherever you live, and whatever type of conservation needs implementing.
Having travelled/worked all over the uk, I was always astounded by the fact that soooo many people didn't know their own area, or give it any priority or interest in their life. I agree, that encouraging local people to be interested in their own area's wildlife and landscape, can make a very big difference in the long run.

I couldn't agree more. When people have a personal connection to their surroundings, they will take better care of them. And this is true of both natural and constructed environments.

The public is the biggest force in change. Billions of ideas have more force then the best ideas. How do we produce the best ideas to be followed by the most.

The fact that those trophy hunters and poachers seeing this video makes them not care. It's really sad to see that the society do horrible things like this today. Even if this video is shown only a few parts of the community will just show affection. The fact that they have brains and they just keep doing is an eyesore.

There must be an international platform and Law all over the world there are hunters and organizations that make money on all animals including Whales Snakes and Birds everthing that breathes. I shall be very nice for the world that you Moreangels Mbizah be the woman who make this World Platform. There is a G7 and a G8 topics such as the envitonment there should also be a G10 for everthing that lives from Wildlife Animals to Pisces and everthing that lives in nature

Hello! I'm interested in the IguVerse project and I think that it would be great if you could collaborate! They are making a gaming project where people will share 1 percent (or more!) of their in-game income with animal welfare organizations. I think that they could be great help to you!

I've always thought Africa should let poachers know these animals bring in huge amounts of tourists and money so why not train the poachers to actually watch over the animals and pay them a livable wage since it seems like a lot of poachers do it out of desperation

Didn't the trophy Hunter that shot Cecil pay over $50,000 USD to kill the lion? Apparently the conservationists in your community agreed that the money would benefit the conservation efforts there. They weighed the value of one lions life against the value of the $50,000 to be used for other efforts? I'm genuinely curious if people think about this.. you have to think about the issue from both sides in order to understand it fully.

The issue with that argument is pretty simple: most governments are incredibly corrupt. They made a similar argument about the Nepal hikers to the point that so many fucking people are dying on the mountain, solely due to bureaucratic greed that does not reach the communities.
More importantly, nothing alive should have a value associated solely to the absence of said life.

@Optical Clarity So, if I understand you correctly, you are in favor of destroying animals past breeding age, who are a threat to their own species? Who gives ANYONE that right? No one is allowed to openly kill the human species who are a threat to their own. If that was the case we wouldn't have full jails, they would be empty. Why should it be any different for animals? We need to co-exist with everything on this planet. Killing is murder. Cecil was in a national park. A protected park. He was lured out of that park and beheaded. It was illegal what was done to him. That murderer should have been charged and jailed.

@@catlady1084Exactly. Also, what would drive a person to pay a vast amount of money to kill? It seems insane destruction to me, and morally moribund.
