@@scoutmaster33 That was Disney's own fault. They kept interfering with the planning stages and Rowling didn't like the fact that there would be no Hogwarts castle. Disney stone cold refused because they didn't want Cinderella's castle competing with Dumbledore's! Incredibly, there was another meeting but it went so badly that she got up and left! She walked across town to archrival Universal and they literally handed her a blank checkbook. If you see Diagon Alley, Rowling's influence can't be denied: it was built to her specifications. She was adamant that the buildings be tall enough to block out the rest of the park. Even if standing on the stairs next to Escape from Gringotts, you cannot see past the entrance to Diagon Alley. That was intentional because Rowling want to make sure it was totally immersive. I guess we should thank Universal for agreeing to go along with her wishes because in the end, it turned out marvelously...

I think you forgot to mention that one of the first uses of the backlot was for a production called The Lottery starring Bette Midler.

Great video! My wife and I are a "Backlot couple", we met working at this attraction in 2007. We'll be married 10 years in April. We're friends with another Backlot couple who've been married 8 years! There was something really special about the Backlot tour that made it more of a family than a group of Cast Members working together. That was a really tight-knit group and a ton of us were there for the very very last tour. I even saw my wife and I in the footage you used from that very last tour!
Did you still celebrate Chiller Day when the attraction closed? My husband worked there when the original event happened.

Met my wife working at the Tour as well. I was a tour guide from 1989 - 1994.
Oh gosh, seeing The Magic of Disney Animation clip at 4:51 gave me chills. Going to that when I was 12 literally changed my life. I decided then and there that I wanted to be a Disney animator and I wouldn't stop talking about it for the rest of the trip, so my father went back and got hold of a handout they had for aspiring artists like me that described the path to that kind of career. I modeled the rest of my life after that handout and ended up working with Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon eventually as an adult. Still dreaming of working for Disney one day, but wow seeing the place that set me on my course twenty years ago is really something. Disney truly does have a special way of inspiring and bringing joy.

RIP MGM Studios 😢 Seeing the behind the scenes of the movie making process fascinated me as a kid! That park was always my favorite and seeing it slowly die over the years is just sad. I never realized how aaaah popular Bett Mildler was 😂. Star Wars land will be cool and all but nothing can replace the magic of movie making

This is so sad. Literally my favorite park is unrecognizable. Animation, backlot, and even the Great Movie Ride. All gone. I loved it bc it was a part of what made me want to be a film fan.
Same. I was there as a kid in its opening year, and my family went back a few times during the 90s. It was just weird and confusing. Every time I went back, half the layout had changed, and a bunch of stuff I remembered being there was gone. I liked the rides that got added, but as a young film fan, it kind of hurt seeing them constantly cutting back the production side.

Florida’s laws are basically hostile toward the movie industry. This is why the production aspect of MGM and Universal’s parks died. When it’s cheaper to build an entire city facade in Georgia rather than film on location in Florida, active, tourable movie studios will never be practical in this state.
That's why I feel like of all the states competing for the title "Hollywood of the East" Georgia has the best argument in its favor. It's been pretty successful at creating tax and incentive laws to entice producers. North Carolina really shot itself in the foot with bathroom bills and such. Louisiana still has consistent work done there so it's not a done deal, but with the construction of Pinewood Studios I think Hollywood is really making a commitment.

It's funny that my brain thought the Rodger rabbit thing was at Universal and I thought the golden girls and tram were at Universal too. It's so crazy that I have detailed memories of the scene where they would get two audience members (usually kids) to go on the back of the ant and they would do a green screen and make them seem like they were hanging on flying. Man I wish I could go back in time...

Brandon Drangel Well, if you’re talking about Touchstone, then yes. That was one of Disney’s marketing labels, really this label was for films that weren’t exactly kid friendly and didn’t want to be put under Disney name. Home Improvement really wasn’t even bad, but was still placed under the label.

I worked at the Studio Backlot Tour in the Shuttle portions of the ride in 2012, and we all wondered why it was still open. You got a brief look backstage and at costuming, then you saw the Disney Plane, then Catastrophe Canyon, and the Boneyard. But the Boneyard only held a few props toward the end and much of the ride was bland. Plus, if we didn't hit our exact mark in Catastrophe Canyon, the shuttles wouldn't shake and roll. It became harder to activate this feature, as the shuttles grew older. There was one shuttle in particular that almost never activated this portion of the ride. They even closed our ride for refurbishments for a month and the only change was one addition to the boneyard in the form of a prop from the box office bomb The Lone Ranger. It was like they had stopped caring about the ride. It was really sad, because there were portions of it that were really cool, but too many dead spots.

The amount of SHADE being thrown in this video was amazing! I laughed quite a bit! I remember this studio tour from the early 90s and I was a huge fan of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I also remember the Pochantas and Hunchback of Notre Dame shows too. Majority of that stuff my family has on home videos.

bigevilworldwide1 i hate the live action remakes as well, but i honestly don’t think it’s that big a deal that iger has brought more ips into the parks. imo disneyland was created with a bunch of stuff tying into disney’s films in the first place, so it’s not that different to add in new ips now

I felt the same way on this one. I rode it once in the previous year before it’s closing and I just couldn’t tell if it was some weird dream my mind concocted or if it was actually a real thing. Glad I’m not the only who thought they were imagining things😂
They had a prop from Phantom of the Opera, it was a bowl of nuts, and it was for sale. Didn’t get it due to the fact that was at least 5 years ago (2014, the last year I went) and I was young.

From the perspective of someone who LOVES Disney but has just experience Disney World for the first time in Sept 2018, it's crazy to think about how many changes have happened. I came into the park loving everything there, but its weird to think about how my opinions would differ had I experienced all the original attractions
Ricky Scurvy I first visited Disney in 1991, and all of the parks were fantastic! Very educational and exiting! Now it’s all about catering to people with short attention spans!
I was only there in 2013 or 2014, I was too young to remember much. Wish I was able to see all of these old rides there instead of this garbage.
When I first visited Hollywood studios in 2009, I was only 7 years old and I loved the backstage tour along with the Great Movie ride and stuntshow. It’s too bad that I wasn’t born to see the actual good times of this park but much to see how much it actually changed. I’m very vaguely disappointed that Disney decides to change all of their aspects of the studio into just rides that Disney interprets from the movies. Now, I’m a college student pursuing engineering, I hope that I come in the right mind to create something far better than coping out of movies.

My 1st job was for a company in Florida that manufactured wooden propellers for vintage aircraft. We made several life sized propellers for the scene in the film Pearl Harbor where the fighter planes are being strafed on the runway. The prop planes that weren’t destroyed during filming ended up in the backlot tour. It was always cool to be able to see something I worked on, not only in the film but also in the tour. I always loved that ride & my connection to it so I was sad when I found out it closed.

I think- much like its counterpart in Disneyland- it's meant to drum up excitement for and serve as a placeholder until the land is built. I wonder what they'll do with both locations after?

While I agree with disliking the elimination of the Magic of Animation, it was no longer a functioning animation studio, so I understand why it was eliminated. In addition, Galaxy's Edge hasn't opened yet and Launch Bay has been there for a few years. I imagine it will go away when Galaxy's Edge opens. Launch Bay was to meet the Guest demand for Star Wars in the meantime. -- K

This has happened to me on another video, 50 minutes! It was about some dumb evolution of a product from some small company.
I loved, loved, loved the backlot tour. MGM was where I learned about all the movie making magic - foley, special effects, stunt work. I was 10 the first time we went to Disney, and I fell in love with movie making there.
One of my favorite aspects of New York street was one of my family members thinking he found a real shop and walking into an empty fake room on the set before being politely scolded by cast members.
Sure am sad I missed a two hour tour where I could have seen all those iconic set pieces from that totally amazing iconic Bette Midler movie. My life will never be complete.

Pretty interesting how both Universal and Disney were going all-in into making central Florida a real "second Hollywood" where you can see real movies and TV shows being made, complete with seeing the stars casually stroll through the studios, as you might see at the Universal Studios Hollywood tours. But neither could really pull it off. They really did it all backwards from California. The reason the world's first real "theme" parks were made in Southern California in the first place was precisely to allow the masses to come see how the movie magic was done. Disneyland was created as studio "set" in a sense, with employees referred to as "cast members", etc. Even if it wasn't a real working studio (with the real studios being back in Burbank, not Anaheim), it's no coincidence that Disneyland was build in So Cal near where all the real action took place.
Now, Florida could pull off Disneyland (in the form of the Magic Kingdom at Disney World) just fine given that its allure didn't necessitate actual filming taking place there. Meanwhile the allure behind Universal Studios in Hollywood was originally just the studio tour, where you tour real movie sets where you can see a lot of history with old sets from classic films. I think that the idea that either Disney or Universal could recreate that in Florida was just pure folly. For one, Florida was never going to be a hub of TV and movies in the same way that So Cal was. And two, it's really hard to replicate the history that the original Universal Studios lot in Hollywood has (or any other studio lot in Hollwyood). You can't just create the tour straight out of the gate. You need to build that history over time. Instead Disney and Universal just built the tour in Florida first, and then just hoped that the movies and sense of history behind their tours would follow.

Actually there was a huge push by all of Florida at that time to bring in more production and it did look like it was going to grow (movie Parenthood etc) but it just dried up. Full Sail University started around this time and they kept promising us it would come...it didn't...I moved out of state

Yeah I’m in my mid 20s and I just happened to be lucky enough to go to Disney World and Universal Studios parks a few times right before a lot of the the old rides and even great ones were taken down. I was young, but I still remembered them and am glad I was just old enough to get on some of these classic rides.

Universal is recording some of their rides in VR now to preserve them, you can watch the old Jurassic Park ride on TH-cam (they're remodeling it for Jurassic World soon), hopefully they will do it for other attractions, and Disney will follow suit.
I tell you what I wish I could’ve done - DISNEY QUEST. Why didn’t I go on it before closing? Well...
1. I am too young (I’m currently 14 too)
2. I’m a UK citizen, and our closest Disney park is Disneyland Paris (which never had Disney Quest)
I feel like if I was an artist, the last thing I would want is dozens of guided tours constantly looking at me working. That feels more like a punishment than anything else.
I remember going to MGM during this time and seeing the props and how movies were made. I always found it incredible and I was lucky enough to go there while they were working on The Lion King, show casing their next movie, Mulan. This is what made me want to get into animation.
I would go to Disney World every 4-8 years and when I went in 2016 I hadn’t realized the Backlot Tours was gone. So I was super excited to ride it since it was my favorite attraction at Hollywood Studios. Once I couldn’t find it on the map while looking around for it in the park, I started tearing up and it kinda ruined my day. Very heartbroken to say the least.

I would have fuckin loved this as a kid. Seeing the actual Snowspeeder? Hell yes. Seeing miniatures? Yes. I love all of this
I have had an epiphany about why I hate Hollywood Studios so much. I remember that Back Lot tram and walking tour and was fascinated by it. Seeing costuming and the set design and then going to see the animators drawing the next films. Now it's just crappy shows. Slinky Dog is fun but I loved seeing the behind the scenes. Worst park ever in my opinion now.

Haze unfortunately, there seems to be no off season anymore. And with Disney’s new pricing system for tickets, it’s what they’re hoping for. Bringing people in on what would’ve been the off season by offering cheaper tickets since they’ve raised prices so much.

I love watching these videos in the run-up to going to them/at the time when I’m going to them. It’s so cool, hearing about all this history and then going to the place itself and seeing stuff like the remnants of long-gone attractions. It’s a feeling I can’t really explain. Of course, I’m gonna watch a Yesterworld video whether I’m going to a theme park or not.

Man, I remember doing this as a kid. And the great movie ride. Classics. Hopefully they get revived one day. I bet Disney could make a whole new park called yesterworld and put all these classics there.

I will always remember this ride and park. MGM studios was always my favorite, the shows were great and movies have always fascinated me. Being able to see props from my favorite movies and a peek behind the curtain in the backlot tour will forever be fond memories.
Even though it became disappointing in it's later years, it's still an attraction I wish I got to experience in some way. When I got to Florida in January of 2015 it was already closed unfortunately but anytime you went to Lights, Motors Action Stunt Show, you could see Catastrophe Canyon and dream of a time long gone where one ride, made up almost all of a Disney theme park!
this and the great movie ride are extremely nostalgic to me. im thankful that i grew up with disney and universal passes
You do such a great job of going through park experiences! Even though I missed out on rides like this, it gives me ideas and inspires me to visit the parks and learn more.
Great video! Lots of great memories. I love how people now reference Bette Middler’s The Lottery like it was a legitimate movie. It was a very, very, very short promo piece - more of an extended sequence - that was created almost exclusively to feed into the backlog tour, and to show off the lots capabilities. I remember, even as a young kid, recognizing this the first year of the park when I visited, and being a little disappointed they had to resort to that. Still, you got references and locations from Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Big Business, so I wasn’t too bummed.
From what I gathered, and I could be wrong, it aired on TV as a full fledged movie....but there's a reason you can't find a copy today.

Nostalgic! Interesting return to my childhood, the boneyard is still a standout feature, max from flight of the navigator, the helicopter from blue thunder, Jonny 5 etc. I was a geek before I even knew it
I dont remember anything to do with bette midler but by then (90's) it was starting to look tired
We went there when I was a little kid and I LOVED the animation studio part. I wanted to be an animator when I grew up and I knew the answer to all of the questions the guide asked us kids. It got to the point where they were like "OK, let other kids answer now."

When I was a kid my favorite place to visit was Universal Hollywood. It was an inspiration to me because I was always fascinated about film. That fascination is the reason why I work in industry today. You are so lucky you were able to experience MGM. I never got the chance. Thank you for sharing.
I’m sad the the dip mobile just sat rotting away. I went to Hollywood studios as a kid and all I really remember about the whole park was the dip mobile and the great movie ride. I’ve been going to Disney world every other year for 2 decades and only went to that park that one time.
I was working for a video production facility in Florida and we did a lot of the advance promotional work for Disney. When the Disney facility was completed I tried a number of times to use it for their own productions but they wanted so much money to use the facilities it was not possible. So they basically priced themselves right out of the market. This was a very accurate presentation of just how fake the whole place really was just doing staged demo shows for the guests. I remember having so much fun in the park, behind the scenes and after-hours "playing" with things and being in places I am sure they would not have wanted me to be. I can remember being with some folks from Cinema Products in CA while giving a Steadicam training workshop and they were completely mesmerized by Sunset Blvd and the Chinese theater. All I have are a few pins, some snapshots and some great memories from that special time.

Before I finish this video I just wanted to say thank you so much for putting these amazingly well made mini-documentaries together! This is an AMAZING channel for anyone who loves old and new theme park history/info. And I bet these videos took alot of time on your end! Most of these are put together with a single, or multiple pictures. And sometimes they don't even bother with visuals all together! Not only does your footage, and pictures match the context and give more insight to what you are saying in that specific moment in time, but the editing is PERFECT and really makes these videos feel like full professional productions and documentaries!! You should be working in the entertainment world my friend! Either way, thanks and thanks again for dedicating your time for us to have these amazing videos. As someone who loves anything involving theme parks and their history, this is the best channel for me, especially for long forgotten attractions and deeper info on these places!! You're the best!! We went to MGM soon after it opened, and I was a kid in love with Roger Rabbit. The Loony Bin (and Roger's painted footprints leading to it) were the best thing ever to me!

Both parks weren't all that good, they may have a couple of noteworthy stuff, but most of it was bleh.
Major changes were needed for two meh parks.
Except more people will be going to the park when star wars land opens then ever went when it was mgm.

I've always been crazy about 101 Dalmatians, and one of my earliest memories is going to the MGM studios and seeing the props from the 101 Dalmatians like Cruella's car etc, I loved it.
I LOVED the Backlot Tour. Was my favourite thing to do in Orlando. Used to really enjoy seeing first hand how movies and TV shows were actually made and witnessing the shear scale of the sets that needed to be created in order to produce the films realistically. Seeing the original vehicles, props and fashion was also such a highlight. Was like an interactive movie museum. I suppose now that a lot of films are just put together with ‘usually’ unauthentic CGI, the use of real elements aren’t needed as much in Hollywood. Big loss!
I worked at the Backstage Studio Tour/Backlot Tour, Special Effects Water Tank and the Great Movie Ride. The 90’s was a great time in that park!
I literally just finished watching a video about this same thing by Expedition Theme Park. I waited a bit between the two so I can judge this one fairly. Both were really good! It's interesting seeing what each of you decided to focus on.
Our family was fortunate to visit WDW during one summer from Wisconsin with our daughter 11 and son 8 on a family vacation.
It was perfect !
One outstanding ride/experience/backstage ride was the BACKLOT "tour" !
It was well conceived, executed, unpredictable, full of surprises and totally enjoyable.
We were so disappointed when we were able attend a few years later to find that it had been eliminated.
Our "children" are now 22 and 26. They have basically "aged out of WDW till they have their own children.

I was really bummed out when I heard the Great Movie Ride was closing. It was easily one of my favorite rides in all the parks because no matter hw many times I saw the same stuff and heard the same shpeal about it all I loved the animatronics and special effects and the looks into some of the most well known and iconic movies ever made. RIP Great Movie Ride
Ahhh! I went on this very tour in 1990. This certainly brings back some memories. I had forgotten all about the cornball demo movies with all of the celebrities. Thank you for creating this look back.
It must've been around 1967 or '68....when I got to go on the Universal Studios tour in Hollywood. If I could go back & experience THAT day....I would. The tram tour seemed to last for hours, with several stops along the way. An actual tour guide who KNEW something about the movie-making process.... walked us thru several sets & even a few dressing rooms....explaining things. I returned in the late 1990s, but the tram tour had been shortened to under about an hour.....& the rest of the place had been transformed into little more than a bunch of amusement park rides.
I miss the Backlot Tour...it was so good to go on to wind down from walking around and no matter how many times you went on it it was always interesting and fun
I loved the backstage tour. We were there one day when Mickey Mouse Club was filming and they pointed out Britney Spears in particular.
I loved the Backlot Tour!!! We always road it, when it was raining. I don't remember hearing anything about The Lottery, staring Bette Midler.
Expedition Theme Park just barely beat you to it, but I think yours goes a little more in depth. I would have loved to experience Hollywood Studios in it's hayday, but the era is over, and we don't need an entire theme park to tell us about movie making (though it would be more fun). I just hope Galaxies Edge is a worthy replacement, and the "step into the movies" theme works.
so ya know if Galaxy's edge fails the same way it has done so far in Disneyland in California the park may fall into the threshold of being in danger of permanently closing given that no ride or attraction that was successful was built in the new millennium other than Toy Story Midway Mania (which is anchoring a land that is deemed a failure currently).
Things like Indiana Jones and Muppet Vision are likely to fall next, which means that if they already have yanked out nearly everything else that opened before Sunset Blvd. opened, that expansion would fall in danger of literally anchoring the park and must hold out on its own as long as possible (it almost already is given the park's current state). It would not surprise me if in the near future if Starwars in Hollywood studios pulls a Eruo Disney opening that the park gets considered for permanently shuttering.

I visited this "park" last week and was really sadden and frustrated by what they have done to it. Frankly, there was nothing left. With the closing of The Great Movie Ride (which, frankly, is an atrocity equal to the tearing down of Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom), I had no interest left in the place. Meh. I walked around for about an hour, looking at all the closed buildings and then left. Totally disillusioned and unsatisfied. Even the Magic Kingdom seems to have forgotten its roots and is now a cash-grab kiddie fun park now. Where is the class? Where is the dedication to Disney's rich history? Very sad and, frankly, unforgivable.

Well, it's now a theme park battle between them and Universal so Disney is now trying to incorporate IP and movies into the parks more cause of the huge success Harry Potter made.

I love Hollywood history and the classic olde-tyme nostalgic/retro experience that it started as. I don't care to attend a Star Wars park. Meh. I'm hoping that the Magic Kingdom will keep its roots and continue to (somewhat) celebrate classic Disney at least.
A very interesting video... I feel privileged that my wife and I did our honeymoon in Disneyworld back in 2012 and saw all this stuff before it vanished. It will be even more interesting when we go back for our 10 year anniversary in 2022.

I am heartbroken that the studio backlot tour was closed and replaced with cheap rides. i believe that seeing behind the scenes content at home is nothing compared to seeing it in person. i believe that nothing is outdated and times shouldn't change unnecessarily.
I wonder what sparks these drastic changes. How do they know when to change something? Is it to attract local or overseas customers? is it really necessary?
To find out the reasoning behind it all, would be an interesting video.
I remember the Loony Bin. I still have a picture, somewhere, of myself, around 9 (for reference I'm 42 now lol), and my little sister, under that steam roller, pretending to be terrified. 😂 Also, Honey I Shrunk the Kids was the first movie I saw at a drive-in. That drive-in is closed now. 😓

Oh my Goodness, this was an insane blast to the past when I went in around 2003 or 2004, there was a lot of Herbie stuff and I didn't even realize at the time it was being destroyed. I mean I was a kid. But I totally remember all the Honey I shrunk the kid's stuff and even the Great Movie Ride was one of my favorites. I'm glad I went back in 2017 before it closed.

Man, I wish I could have gone to this before it was removed. Herbie, and Short Circuit were some of my favorite movies, so seeing those characters in front of me would have been beyond amazing. I can only hope that Herbie, and Johnny Five are at least well-protected somewhere, and weren't left to rot carelessly by Disney like most of their props, and displays were.
