- "As a Filipino and as an Asian, I don't want my country to be a battleground," said Raul L Lambino, chairman of Philippine New Energy Group Inc.
He noted that there is a very strong xenophobia in the Philippines, but there are still some Filipinos who really love China and the Chinese people.
Former Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai responded that if external interference can be eliminated, the China-Philippines relationship will return to a track of healthy development and mutually beneficial cooperation.

As much as China's activities in the WPS/SCS are a cause for major concern. two wrongs do not make a right. This does not give us the right to be Sinophobic. Our society is already heavily divided and dysfunctional, based on factors such as socioeconomic status, religion, ethnicity and so forth. So in short, we have a highly divided and racist society.
Note: If you read the 501 page Arbitral Award (available on the Permanent Court of Arbitration website), the Philippines' case against China was never about addressing territorial disputes. Simply put, it was all about addressing maritime entitlements and other rights that the Philippines was entitled to under UNCLOS. As a matter of fact, the Arbitral award even called for the peaceful resolution of disputes (i.e. negotiations, bilateral dialogues etc.) as stipulated under the UN Charter. It is also consistent with the 1987 constitution which renounces war as a form of national policy.
Diplomacy remains to be the key. As much as the businessman may be worried about his business, it too will have severe implications on the local economy and our fellow kababayans. We will not receive any significant form of assistance from any other nation as they too have significant economic relations with China, in which they do not want to be disrupted or even severed. There is so much more to say, which cannot be entirely stated in this comment.
Also, read up on the 1995 Mischief reef incident. Mischief reef is also a Philippine claimed territory. When it was occupied by the Chinese (as it was practically unguarded by the PH), we sought the assistance of the US. The US did not opt take any sides and urged all claimant states to address their competing claims peacefully. Lastly, In 2006 China made a Declaration under Article 298 of UNCLOS indicating that it did not accept certain compulsory dispute resolution procedures under Part XV of the convention, including disputes with respect to 'historic bays or titles'. Declarations were allowed under UNCLOS, meaning that some state parties can opt not to adhere to certain provisions of UNCLOS as it may be inconsistent with their interests. China IS NOT THE ONLY ONE to do this by the way.
Before any smart ass would refer to my comment as defeatist and treacherous, all I could say, is read a book, learn. Do not just rely on the media to update you on what's happening. I am even still trying to understand how the media was able to summarize a 501 page arbitral award quite simply, discounting many other important points that are necessary in understanding the nature and context of our dispute with China. UNCLOS does not address territorial disputes. EEZ is not national territory. Our territorial waters only extend 12 nautical miles from its baselines.
