Most Fil-Ams I know (I’m a first Gen FilAm but born & grew up first in the Phil) are misguided about Filipino politics. Most unfortunately look at it in a American/bourgeois lense. Very simplistic POV and assuming It’s like the democratic vs republican situation in the US. Some who studied abroad with me in the Phil often live far differently from experiencing what normal Filipinos in the Philippines live like so they don’t often understand the political nuance and the struggles of the masses. When it comes to the China issue though they obviously support the US but they understandably won’t often know the whole situation and why some Filipinos may be against the US as well.

Not really. It's nerve racking for countries with incompetent, corrupt leaders maybe.
Simply look at how Vietnam deals with things. Vietnam has good relations with both US and China (especially China), yet does not host a single US military base anywhere on its territory, and actively rejects the US from doing so for decades. Is the fastest growing economy in the world.
Philippine leaders lack pragmatism and competency.
As for why I said Vietnam has especially good relations with China, it is because China is actually several tiers above the US in terms of cooperation and partnership in Vietnam's own cooperation tiers. The US is actually just a basic tier 1 level of cooperation on Vietnam's list. So don't listen to what the troll propagandist US and CIA media outlets say. Vietnam and China is actually on very good terms.

The responses are a mix of English and Tagalog. Tagalog itself is a melange - language of aboriginal natives, English, Spanish, Malay, Chinese, among others.
As a native speaker of English myself, what I find surprising is NOT that there are words borrowed from other languages. Rather, it is that the borrowed words are pronounced using the original native accent and intonation. For me, that results in my "...What!?! Tagalog belongs to the Austronesian language family, the same family as Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, and the aboriginal languages of Taiwanese natives. Over the years, Tagalog incorporated many loan words from Spanish (due to colonization), Hokkien (due to massive immigration of Han-Chinese people from Fujian within the last 500 years), and Sanskrit (due to our ancient Buddhist/Hindu past).
The guy at 11:34 looks like a standard Austronesian from Southeast Asia and Taiwan; he doesn’t look Spanish. Our ancestors originally came from southern China (non-Han Chinese) about 8,000 years ago, migrated to Taiwan, and then dispersed to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc.

Just to clarify what the girl said about the US not having a significant impact on the Russo-Ukrainian war at 8:58 is false, the amount of aid the US has sent to Ukraine is higher than the next 5 organizations/countries' aid combined via Statista, additionally what kind of military aid Ukraine has been getting is also vital, in the first 2 months of the war; in the Kyiv front the use of Western-made NLAWs and Javelins helped bog down and force the Russians to abandon their objective of taking Kyiv. Apart from that, Ukraine started to gain the initiative when M777 Howitzers and HIMARS were delivered (this was back in September-October 2022 in Kharkiv Oblast where Ukraine battered Russia's First Guards Tank Army or just generally the elements of the Russian Army in Kharkiv Oblast and forced them to withdraw to Svatove-Kreminna Line), as well as during the winter when Russia was hitting Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Currently, while Ukraine continues to push for their Spring Counteroffensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast the American-made Bradley IFVs along with other Western-made tanks such as Leopards of diverse variants have been praised by the AFU for their crew protection capabilities. One more thing, with the delivery of the Patriot SAM System, comes greater air protection an example is how Russia's "unstoppable" Kh-47M2 Kinzhal Hypersonic Missile was shot down, and once Ukraine's Air Force receive F-16 fighter jets it'll be safe to assume that Ukraine will have a favorable contested airspace which would mean that these donations have made a significant impact in the war.

A radar installation means the US will spend big $$$ in that country and PI is smart enough to know that. China could run over PI quite easily, but if a US base is there then no. We will likely have a carrier group visit a PI port to tell China 'do not touch' and hopefully that will be sufficient to ensure PI sovereignty. Sadly, like most people around the world, Most of these people dont know the history and the real cause of the dispute in the south China sea or west Philippine sea. The Philippines and china are not the only ones that lay claim on these islands. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and even Taiwan are also claiming the disputed islands for themselves. Its naive to think that the US is getting in the mix because it "cares" for Filipinos. Like the Chinese, the americans are also only looking after their own selfish interests. The addition of 5 more US military bases in the Philippines is never about protecting the Philippines from foreign invasion, its about the US protecting its interests in Taiwan's microchip industry which it's very reliant on for its weapons manufacturing industry to continue it's domination and hegemony across the world. China on the other hand also wants to take control of the region to protect it's shipping because it's economy depends on the shipping lanes through the south China sea. China nor the US don't care about the Philippines and neither do other countries. Filipinos are just too brainwashed by Western propagandists and are just too gullible. 1:14 No, the reality is that PH does NOT have sovereignty over those islands. When the US handed over its sovereignty to the PH, they SPECIFICALLY said it did NOT include the Spratly islands etc. So PH does NOT have legal sovereignty over those islands. PH just wish they did, and made their citizens to believe its theirs.
7:28 This guy is uninformed. Its not "illegal" per se if its no laws against it. ESPECIALLY when its disputed territory. PH does NOT have sovereignty over the islands, so its not "theirs". Its called "disputed territory" for a reason. Many countries claim these territories, not just China and PH.
7:35 You "won" because China was not even there to defend themselves. China was not there because China knew it was useless to go, as the current international laws present is incompatible with a countrys sovereignty claims. What that means is the current international maritime laws only define whats considered a countrys territory based on the 12nm distance from a countrys coastline, EEZ etc, but has no laws to define whether a piece of territory falls under the sovereignty of Country X or Country Y.
7:51 No, you cant forcefully implement it because that court you won that case from has ZERO authority to enforce anything. Even the US cant.

As per my observation Filipinos have diverse opinion regarding US presence and building military bases may be because pro-US media is more dominant in Philippines. According to history US international politics and relations always revolve around self-interest. Look at US foreign policy today at Ukraine and Afghanistan or where US is involved, if it serves their purpose they dump in their armaments and spread the concept so called 'protection or safeguard democracy' but once it's starts hitting them hard they will quietly left as we have witnessed what happened in Afghanistan. For me as Asian it's time for us to unite and counter West hegemony and it's time for Asia to rise because it's been many century that West and Europe has colonised us and dominated us and we have been ill treated so we should not keep bowing to them and keep serving their purpose. It does not seek to entrench with the barbarism of both countries, with China's aggression and with the opportunistic tendencies of the US. The country only seeks to continually economically grow and strengthen its own military further to fend off both powers.

    Wisdom comes with age.
These young kids think the America is so cool effect. This is soft power in action. Making you think that someone who colonized you and abused you for 50+ years is actually your best friend.
Never forget how many Filipinos the American killed almost 1-2 million!
It is really scary how influential the US media and soft power is in the Philippines. A lot of what the US does to the Philippines both currently and historically gets brushed aside either by lack of awareness or misinformation (western biased media) regarding the matter.
Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that Vietnam has more claimed (3x) territories than China?
As a Filipino, I don't want my country to end up in an American Proxy war like Ukraine.
This video shows you have naive and simple minded the youngster are, the view from the elderly is far more rational they have lived long enough to know.
The Philippine Media paints such a rosy image of the US, and China as selfish materialistic and nation motivated by self interest. It's like they have never met Americans before.
The US is not the saviour that these Filipinos think they are.
Simple Question. How many countries has China invaded, colonized, and built military bases in?
Now ask yourself the same question about the US.
The colonial mentality is strong in Filipinos. Their country has been exploited by the US for economic and military gain while its people proudly hail them as saviours. It's largest trading partner is China, contributing to largest economic growth in decades. Althewhile receiving military aid and protection that solidifies its position as cannon fodder.

I also hate this about my countrymen. US didn't save us from Spaniards. The Spaniards were already losing against our Katipuneros and Rebolusyonaryos. US came into the view to "buy" the Philippines, staging a mock battle against Spain to make it seem like US saved the Filipinos. During WWII, the American leaders literally abandoned Philippines. It was our Guerillas who fought hard for our country. And when everything's almost settled down, US came to Philippines again to "save" Filipinos. It's so nauseating. There are so many unsung heroes in the Philippines that many Filipinos aren't aware of, yet here they are proclaiming US as the heroes.

Do you really think that if somehow the Philippines chooses to align with China, China would stop bullying the Philippines? You try to speak of history as if you understand it.
US, China or Russia, all of them are superpowers that crushes softpowers beneth them. The one that causes less harm would be the best option. You think that would be China? Do you really believe that the communist China now is the same pacifist dynasty before?

I am Filipino American with my entire family being Born in the Philippines. In the next few years we're all moving to Quezon City. I have the dilemma of having to renounce my US Citizenship in order to stay.
But besides that I might be a bit biased but my family and I fully support the US presence in Asia. One thing that Filipinos and Taiwanese want most of all is the status quo. We want help from the US but we do not want an armed conflict with China or Russia. The Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan do not have the capability to defend themselves against the super powers like China or Russia. Maybe Korea can to an extent.
If more US bases in PH is a good enough deterrent to keep the region peaceful I'm all for it.
My greatest fear is imperialist China taking over South Korea Japan and the Philippines.

Philippines should not follow the US blindly but I think the history is clear that US values are more aligned with Philippines. US soldiers died in world war 2 to free Philippines from Japanese invasion. And after the war, the US agreed to Philippines independence and self-governance. The US isn't claiming any Philippines land, that is China now stealing what islands they can from Philippines. Philippines needs US to counter balance China's aggression but also not become blind follower of US. It is a balance and I hope that Marco Jr. can find that.

    • @BanigNation
      @BanigNation 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

I think it's the other way around, the Filipino soldiers died for the war that isn't theirs. America used (still is) the land but they don't want the responsibilities that comes with it. In the Treaty of Paris, they have the right to take advantage of our resources as if they are Filipinos. They wanted the land, but not the people. So there. They gave the Filipinos the "independence" because it's too much money to rehabilitate the country after the war. Also, they said that we're not white enough to be able assimilate to their culture. So don't make it appear like they're the saviours. They used us and are still using us for their advantage. Now between US and China, I am siding with neither. They can kill each other, just don't use us as a pawn.

Japan, Singapore, and Korea chose close US engagement with good results. Same for Europe. Every country needs friends. No friend is perfect. What happened there? China presented carbon dated documents from the Tang Dynasty (600s A.D.) identifying these disputed islands as part of the southern Chinese territories. But why should that be recognized when conflicts among these claimants play very well into US hands? And why should Filipinos, who like the Americans are so lacking of any sense of history, know this when "English" is the medium they can understand. They said there's WMD in Iraq, too.
