  • Our latest student lecture features the first lecture in the second term (1st Year) introductory course on Linear Algebra from leading Oxford Mathematician James Maynard.
We are making these lectures available to give an insight in to the student experience and how we teach. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
You can also watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Student Lectures - All...

This time 45 years ago I was a maths student, and lectures were delivered in this way, but with blackboards. Nowadays, it's difficult to understand why the lecture material is not posted online, thus leaving the lecturer free to give explanations where necessary and to do problems. Most students can't listen, write and learn at the same time. Lecture time is time wasted that could be more valuably spent actually learning.

They only know topics and discuss it with a class that is barely introduced to the topic resulting in nothing but waste of time. During discussion, the teacher provides no new input and students can not either. This also does not change. The top scorers study by themselves thus giving the teacher an incorrect impression. Its crazy what I have seen.

The real learning comes from solving problems. These classes server as nothing but introductions to chapters within the book. Plus they might show how to solve one problem or so.
