Coyote Gulch Loop | Cross Country Backpacking | Escalante, Utah

  • This modified Coyote Gulch Loop features all the highlights of the canyon: the striking Jacob Hamblin Arch, an exhilarating 400-foot roped ascent out of the Water Tank/Sneaker Route, Steven’s Arch and adrenaline-inducing Crack in the Wall and more all in one epic 2-day 30-mile backpacking loop.
The cross country portion is necessary to make it into a lollipop loop and allows us to hit the highlights of the trail. This also has an added excitement: the terrain across this portion is uniquely strange and Martian-looking, as most of the route is across large rolling hills of red sandstone. Along the way, add a dash of excitement by crawling under an old cow fence.

The falls are just as beautiful as I remember. I did Crack in the Wall in my seventies and all that soft sand from 40 Ridge to get back there, but the sight of Stevens Arch was worth it. We're still going at 85 as we did Horse Canyon, Little Death Hollow, and Wolverine back in April. Nice video! 😀😀😀😀😀

Very nice video! But with an error in your instructions that might confuse people. That is NOT the Escalante River that you first encounter, coming out of Hurricane Wash. It is Coyote Gulch. The Escalante River does not run through Coyote Gulch. It is not until you reach the bottom of Coyote Gulch, that you intersect with the Escalante River. You will find the Escalante River and the confluence with Coyote Gulch, at the bottom of the hill, as you come out of Crack-in-the-Wall.
