I think a lot of it to me was that he never really got rid of the tendency to overplay slightly, or go for the more extravagant move over the simpler one, plus injuries, the general chaos at United post-Fergie and other options in that position at United (Young and Valencia) being more consistent. Such a shame though because he was so much fun to watch on his day.
That's a really good point. You saw with Messi and Ronaldo as they matured their games became simpler and more effective. Nani never really grew. Still brilliant to watch.
We as fans who watched footabll in the 80's, 90's and 2000's up until 2009, saw the best era of football. It has left us jaded because we think it is normal to have so many generational talents every year. I think this is supposed to be kinda the normal levels that we should expect in the sports. In the previous decades we saw almost 5-6 exectional players come and grace the sport. Today that isnt the case. In the case of Nani, he would be a killer in today's game. His dribbling would put many of the supposed top players to shame.

A great parallel I often use is: when COD first came out, online, (Modern Warfare) I was DOMINANT. I was consistently top of the lobby most games, stomping everyone. I then went back to it a few years later and there were literally kids stomping me far harder than I ever did. Simply because the levels had now been raised so much. Kids were playing from a younger age and had a far greater understanding of the game.

He was great for Portugal in Euro 2016. He captained them in the final when Cristiano was injured against France. Top scorer for Portugal in the same tournament. Portugal would not win that tournament without Nani.

I remember his volleys being perfectly launched at insane angles across the pitch. Everyone who received the ball had no complaints. Team player and he loved his squad.

When Nani was starting to find that consistency with age, I think people forget how young Nani was... He was 19 when we signed him in 2007, around 2012, he was like 24, when players start to hit their peak and are done growing in all aspects, that's when Carragher did that tackle on him, he was never the same after that.
