    This the nicest machine I've seen and the most inspirational because everyone here with a garden shed and grandads old foldy outy toolbox he made as an apprentice thinks they can build something like it and they could. It's awesome. Its pretty and petite and sounds gorgeous and it ticks all the boxes.

    That is the best example of a cycle car I have ever seen. It is very fast for such a small motor.

    Back in 1974 my dad built for me his interpretation of a cycle car using a Briggs and Stratton 5hp engine. What you have here reminds me of that. The steering was the same and at speeds over 5MPH it was not, shall we say, responsive? It was scary as hell for an 11 year old to drive. The chain drive fell off under load a couple of times. Fortunately it was not exposed so no one was injured, just really frustrated.
    A great memory. Thank you!

      Damn I wish someone wouldve built something like this for me, or even just mentored me through the process. Love my Dad but he is mechanically r3tarded lol ...And my Grandfather was a 'car guy' but never much interested in helping us grandkids with projects of our own. He tried to teach me how to drive a manual when I was a teen and gave up after 2 trys.

    What an outstanding build you did there. Couple of things that kinda scared me: the chain running along the floorboards by your feet and legs and the spool and wire steering BUT I figure it was the way it was done "back in the day"

    • @seanbatiz6620
      @seanbatiz6620 ปีที่แล้ว

      If not mistaken, most average bicycles man’f’d back @ 1880’s into the early 1920’s, were made way more robust, employing much thicker hub/spindle designs… this might in fact be what inspired whomever handyman tinkerer of that era, with the notion of such wheels, hubs &, spindles being strong enough to convert into a four-wheeler. Awesome recreation of what would’ve been possibly more common to witness chuggin’ down some ROUGH dirt road back in the day, then seeing or hearing an actual auto-mobile Horse”LESS” Carriage! Which, for a lot of rural folk, might have seemed like witchcraft voodoo LOUD RACKET! I’d imagine operating this vehicle at that speed demonstrated here, “felt like” ONE HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR! 😳😲

    Tim, can a replica cyclecar (with its external handles, chain drives etc conform to the DVLA MVSA quadricycle build rules for roadworthiness?

    • @thephilpott2194
      @thephilpott2194 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A leading question! The entity that is DVSA (including VOSA, DVLA and presumably the one you've mentioned as well) does not have a very consistent approach to road-registering bitsers. They view a car of this type of build and age to be defined by these 3 principle assemblies: Engine/Body/Chassis. If it can be established with reasonable certainty (whether through owners clubs records or whatever) that two out of those three existed on a vehicle back in the day, this improves the chances of success considerably. Tim's vehicle IS registered for the road, which must have taken an effort and a fair amount of research. It's problematic though as there are a lot of people who try and hoodwink DVSA and some of them do succeed.....this causes ever worsening problems for genuine enthusiasts as opposed to profiteers.
      The design of Tim's car does, i think, expose the foolhardiness of MOT exemption for 40 plus year old vehicles though. The Govt. is effectively relying on the owner/driver to go round and sound every single wheel spoke once a year, inspect the wire and bobbin steering, etc etc. A simpler MOT for older vehicles makes much more sense, they just can't be bothered to administrate it: General condition/sharp edges, Tyres/Wheels/Brakes, Steering, Suspension, Lights, Mirror/s, Wipers and washers where fitted, driver's view of the road, Fuel system condition. That's pretty much all that is needed, and the insurance industry would be much happier as a result.
      Modern composite brake linings with more friction coefficient would be a good idea for this car; it's fast, faster than it's brakes for sure. The knowledge that you CAN stop if you want to is a good thing to have in your pocket, even if it does put extra strain on the axle/chassis.

    • @thephilpott2194
      @thephilpott2194 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      -Actually now that i look at it, i can't even see where the brakes are...possibly a transmission brake acting on the drivetrain. Not the best, but with narrow rear tyres it's probably academic. Would i drive it? Hell, Yes, but probably on the old airfield peri track just down the road from me, to get accustomed to it!
