    Landed here using the QR code in your book, otherwise I might have missed an opportunity to view a talented artist in his element. Great organization here. I am a painter, an amateur taxidermist and now I am beginning tie flies. I know how important it is to have a place for your stuff. A studio like this allows you to spend your time creating art not digging through boxes. Thank you for this opportunity to see a great space.

    👍👍 Thanks for the tour! Beautiful setup. Amazing assortment. Clean, organized and accessible. What started out with an inherited vice from my dad, has now taken over my wifes dining room..She wants it back! 😂 That salmon had to be an epic battle on a 5wt. I got a 30# carp on my 4wt and that’s my biggest fish on any of my flyrods..So far! 🙂 Thank you for all you share and do for us Barry. Have a great one! 👍🎣🪶👌

I've replicated a few of your flies now and can say my tying ability has improved immensely. Now when I see any tying video I think "I can definitely do that" with each step. Eager to get after it first chance I get.

    Wow and wow! As I sit Covid-19 quarantine, like the rest of the world of over 60 fly fisherman for the past 8 weeks, this morning I stumbled into a whole new world with the purchase of your latest book and visit to your TH-cam channel...I find myself watching this video segment and have the sensation of visiting an advanced world...you clearly have raised the bar on both effective space application and organizational design. As others have stated, a true man cave; all that is needed is a outside porch/veranda with BBQ grill and fridge.

    Nice. I have a fly tying room in my house. It's nowhere near as organized as yours. In fact, it's cluttered with hundreds of spools of thread, wires, tinsels, feathers, hair, foam, hooks, etc., etc. I have a good friend who's an exceptional angler and fly tier. He has a small desk where he ties all his flies. He only fishes with the two flies that he invented: the RS2 and the Avatar. Both in various sizes and colors. The materials he uses are TMC or Daiichi hooks, beaver fur for dubbing, microfibbets for tails, and web of saddle hackle feathers for wing. I've known him for 22 years and I've never seen anyone catch as many fish as he does. He's a minimalist. Uses forceps for a vise and at 86 he still ties his flies down to size 28 when needed.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. So Schmoonkie, Rim Chung is your old friend ? If so that is just great! I love his flies, and quite right, he needs only two patterns. If possible I would love to get a couple of his flies for my collection, I would quite happily buy them, or do a swap. No matter what please give him my warmest regards and thank him for his contribution to our craft.

    • @schmoonkie
      @schmoonkie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thefeatherbender Hi. Yes he is. Wasn't sure you'd be aware of him or his flies. If you do a TH-cam search for "Rim ties the rs2" or "Rim ties the avatar" you can find videos of him tying his flies. I'm also the owner of the rs2fly.com web page, which I originally created in '98 to honor him. At 86 he still fishes about three times a week. During warmer months, he could be on the water for 8-10 hours in a day. He's in exceptionally good shape for his age. If you contact me through the rs2fly.com web page, I'll send you some flies which he tied himself.

    To those who can't/wont afford the expensive plastic containers, try to ask candy stores and others, that get their products in plastic boxes. It works fine, and they are not (very I suspect) dangerous to have the house full of. I bet I've got 500 of them smaller ones (about 1 kg of candy size) with tools, materials aso in them, and they also are tighter lids than many expensive ones.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @CONEHEADDK
      @CONEHEADDK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thefeatherbender Here in Denmark, the news tell us, that we are the most candy eating population in the world, and "almost every" store has "candy buffets", where you fill a bag (that have grown from mobile phone sized to "wide screen tv sized" during my life time) and weight it - like fruit and potatos in "more sain" contries. And they usually come in nice square 15-20 x 10ish clear boxes, that you can get for free from the garbage - or by asking the peeps, that then don't have to pay for getting them removed. I use them for "everything" - but they go brittle if they are exposed to to much sun light, so fx using them for plants only works for a while. Still - free stuff and safe for food (if any plastic really is 100% safe to eat.

      Hi Charlie, Thanks. The mayfly print is one of my photos, I just had done on the aluminium sheet to see how it would look. I am having an exhibition of fly fishing photos next week at the Italian museum of fly fishing in Castel di Sangro in Italy. I do sell a limited edition of these prints but they are a little expensive. If you are interested you can e mail me.

    Very nice room and I love watching all of your videos. Two questions. 1) you tie a lot of large flies (in my opinion) 8s, 10s, 12s, etc. many of which I though would be much smaller 16s, 18s, etc. Is that for filming purposes or do you just have a lot of big bugs in Norway? 2) What type of camera do you use to film your videos. The filming is great. Thank you,

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ray. Both, I try and tie a little larger for the videos and yes we tend to fish with larger flies here in Norway. The camera I use is a Canon EOS1 Mk III.

    Hi Barry,
    Great room! You mentioned that you have the “new” petitjean vise, did he come out with a new version? From my experience with his vise from a few years ago small hooks were help in place very secure but bigger hooks or long shank hooks would not hold secure and move under some pressure. What’s your experience with the vise and bigger hooks? Maybe the jaws work better with big hooks with this new version. Please let me know, thank you! Michael

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, the Petitjean vice is a relative new one with a larger Star screw for setting vice tension and all the new tools racks Gallows tool and bobbin holders. Otherwise its just a regular Swiss master. I have no problem with the hook size...

    I noticed that you mentioned that you use your Regal revolution for your production tying. Is there any particular reason why you favor that vise over other vises? I mean it's pretty clear you are at the level where you know what vise works best for specific flies so I am wondering really what vise would be a good one for me to go with. I'm debating between the Regal revolution, the Swiss Vise master, or the Renzetti master. I used to tie flies when I was a kid for fun, but I didn't fly fish and now that I fly fish I want to get back into tying flies. I'm leaning more towards the Regal but the Swiss Vise is super nice too.

    • @Thefeatherbender

      If your budget stretches to a Swiss vise... But if not the Renzetti would be my second choice.

    Very cool! So you stand up while tying your instructional videos? I saw your wooden vice stand but can't wrap my mind around how you set it up and film. One thing I love about your instructional videos is that you film the tying process from the tiers point of view. Very helpful. Would love to know how you pull that off! :-) Thank you!!

      Hi Rob, thanks, always good to get positive feedback! It took a long time and much failing to get it right, especially the POV filming! I have the camera over my right shoulder and tie with the vice not in front of me, but to one side (off centre) this also took time to get use too!

    Magnificent space - it must have taken quite some time to develop such a good system of organisation. May I say a heartfelt thank you for taking the time and making the effort to share your knowledge and experience with others. I am getting back into tying after many years away. Age has brought less steady hands but more disposable income and I find myself in a position to purchase a new vise. I note that you use both the Regal and the Swiss Master Vise. Both are on my shortlist. May I ask you which of the two you would choose if it were to be the only vise you could tie on? And may I also ask what your dream vise would be, if not one of the two? Thanks again and all the best to you.

    • @Thefeatherbender

      Thanks, and good to hear that you are once again tying. Without doubt I would choose the Swiss Vise. I have collected many vise over the 35 years I have been tying and there is not one that comes near the Swiss Vise. one thing your room is missing is amber with incased insects in them it would add a nice touch to have ancient insects in fact it would be quite neat to add Jurassic period fly patterns to your feather bending styles. Just an idea.

    This is heaven for a fly tier!
    I been tying for 6 years and I'm ready for a new rotary vise.
    I can't decide if I should buy a Dyna King, Regal Revolution or HMH TRV as my next vise. I see you have both, which one would you recommend for me? I tie sea trout and trout flies in size #2/0-#22. If you have some feedback it would be greatly appreciated.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi M, excellent well done. Well neither the Dyna King or the Regal are true rotary, and in my opinion thats a mistake if this is going to be your number 1 vice for tying on. A true rotary is a great advantage when tying any type of flies, if you haven't used one, it will change your tying. If you are seriously considering a D King or Regal, you have a good budget, so I would recommend a Renzetti, a vice that in my opinion beats your first two choices hands down, and I own several of all the vices mentioned. Whatever you choose, good luck...

    • @MS-we4wi
      @MS-we4wi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Thefeatherbender thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. I was sure the DK Barracuda and ultimate indexer+ R Revolution were true rotary vises. Yeah, I heard great things about Renzetti vises, but I just like the look of DK vises better for some reason. I know I shouldn't care about look, but after looking at a Barracuda in a fly shop a few years ago I liked the look and feel of it and I wanted it ever since. The only reason why I was thinking about Regal Revolution is because of how simple it is to switch between different hook sizes. I'm going to take a closer look at Renzetti vises before I make a decision, I'm in no rush. BTW, Have you tested the HMH TRV? Thanks again.

    • @Thefeatherbender
      @Thefeatherbender  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MS-we4wi For sure you choose the vice that you like best. I have a Ultimate indexer and as far as i am concerned there is nothing ultimate about it! I have had to change the jaws TWICE! They where not tempered correctly +++ I haven't tried the HMH TRV but I have a HMH that I tied on for many years, but vices have moved on since then! Good luck and all the best!
