Trains Have Changed Over 200 Years

  • How would old-school trains stand up against the ones we have today? You might be surprised: the grandpappies of locomotives have their own victories!
For example, in 1862, the Pullman company started producing luxury sleeper cars. The cars had upholstered seats, carpeting, and lacquered wood. Beds were concealed behind overhead panels and folded down like luggage compartments. The Pullman company even manufactured private luxury cars. Basically, hotel suites on wheels!

    SUMMARY:
    - Rail cars were used in some parts of England as far back as the early 1500s. They were mostly for carrying coal or unrefined metals out of mines or onto ships.
    - Built almost a century after the Locomotion No.1, the engine car of the Flying Scotsman is nearly 80 ft long and weighs over 100 tons.
    - Diesel trains date back to the late 1800s, but only really started to come into their own in the 1950s.
    - Diesel trains are also much more efficient than their steam predecessors. Steam engines burn coal or wood to boil water.
    - The excess steam also needed to be released when the train arrived, which meant so much built-up energy going to waste.
    - In the 1930s, a typical steam train could spend as much as 65% of its time offline for maintenance.
    - One of the fastest trains operating today is the SNCF TGV POS.
    - Electric trains only need the motor that turns the wheels. Since they get all their power from the electrical grid, they also don’t need to worry about carrying the weight of fuel.
    - Then there are maglev trains, which use magnets to hover (or levitate) above the tracks. Futuristic, fast, and quiet, they have all the benefits of conventional electric trains.
    - As of 2019, the fastest train in the world is the SCMaglev, which can reach an incredible maximum speed of 375 mph.
    - The problem is that maglev trains can't run on regular tracks. An entirely new rail system must be built for them, and that comes with a hefty price tag.
    - Modern train cars are still much safer and more comfortable than anything from the 19th century.
    - The seats on modern passenger trains are similar to the ones on many airliners. The difference is that they don't need seatbelts, and you're free to get up and walk around whenever you feel like it.

0:40 Locomotion No1 was indeed the first loco' to haul a passenger train on a public railway but steam had been in use on colliery wagonways for some years some of which were surprisingly extensive systems with over 100 miles of track.
1:00 Flying Scotsman is about 70' long including her tender. She was not the locomotive used in the Harry Potter films- that was GWR Hall class number 5972 Olton Hall.
1:35 Diesel trains were setting speed records in the inter war years. Both the Burlington Zephyr in the US and the Fleigender Hamburger in Germany (the Hamburg Flyer or, to the delight of English speaking children ever since, the Flying Hamburger) were successful high speed regular services run by streamlined Diesels. Sir Nigel Gresley who had designed the A1 (including Flying Scotsman) and A3 Pacific express passenger loco's seriously considered Diesel traction but decided it was not sufficiently developed (both the Zephyr and the Hamburger were lightweigh railcar units that couldn't carry even 100 passengers) and made the A4 Pacific instead- a streamlined development of the A3.
3:10 The TGV is only so fast because it runs on a network of new lines built as straight and level as possible. Not knocking it but it's a fairly conventional train which solves the problems inherent in higher speeds by burying them under a mountain of money. (Is that a TGV by the way? Doesn't look like one.)
4:25 Ha ha... The Shildon to Newport line near me (some of which follows the route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway) was electrified starting in 1914! Obviously this was quite experimental and, after the Great War, there was neither the money nor the will to extend and advance electrification. By the 1930 some of the infrastructure was falling to bits and the options were to replace it or removed it- it was removed and the Newport line became the only railway to be converted from electric to steam traction.

Taiwan got the train design from the Japanese Shinkansen (bullet train), and now we can cross the whole island in a short time. The first time I rode that, I was looking around the train car thinking "How can you sleep? This is f..ing AWESOME!!!!" 290+ km/hr. The viaducts are designed so that in curves, you never feel any sideways force. It's awesome!!!! Most people sleep or play with their phones, but I want to look out the window. However, anything you see is gone in one second. Never a bump, it's the smoothest train experience ever! You will cross the freeway sometimes and look down and think those cars are slow like ants. (In Taiwan, it's called HSR or 'high speed rail'.) Never disappointed me ever!

Took a train last year to attend a fan-convention, you got it the seats are very comfortable, even in the cheap seats, but it still took 35 hours to get there, and the restaurants and other amenities were only if you felt like spending an arm and a leg extra. Still, I wouldn't mind taking a trip on one of the old steam locomotives that still get around for people who want to learn about/experience the past.

It is a British Rail Class 395 train for the company "Renfe" and the name means: National Network of Spanish Railways. It can go up to 139,809 mph / 225 Kmh, but normal only up to 99,419 mph / 160Kmh.
Edit: This train model looks a bit like the "Renfe Ave S-103" series but the front of this model is more rounded and not so "peaked".

Although we can't having so much of high speed trains, we still have luxury trains like Maharaja Express, Golden Chariot etc... Also, as far as Mumbai's local train services are concerned then they are best but the only problem is that more than 3 million people uses it and it's not enough for them. However just because of corruption the INDIAN RAILWAYS have not grown but they are still doing their best!!!!! ❤❤❤💞💞😉😉😉😍😍😍

The Chicago Metra still has and uses some Pullman Gallery cars built in the 1950s. They had sold some of those cars to commuter rails in Maryland and Virginia. These Gallery cars have upstairs seats which you can see below, hence the name gallery cars. But the Virginia Railway Express commuter train has bought brand new Gallery cars which are based on the same design as the old cars but are much nicer and comfortable with modern technology. These cars come with bathrooms.
