    Believe it.
    12/9 she was born
    16/9 Lee Kuan Yew was born
    Same Virgo.
    Different ideologies
    She is the female version of LKY in terms of charisma, eloquence, with immense breadth and depth of knowledge. Two different polarized beings.
    Respect.

    Han Suyin was right to support Mao. She saw so much suffering in China before 1949 that anything would have been better than the occupation of China by so many western countries and finally the Japanese. I read all her books, an unforgettable woman.

      @@lepetitchat123 I can only say that you are heavily brainwashed by western media. Suggest you visit China to see for yourself and talk to the Chinese. Mao is still held in high esteem by a high percentage of Chinese. Before the communist revolution in 1949, the Chinese average life span was only 35 years, in 2019, chinese life span has increased to 78 years. Life expectancy is a key measure of the progress of a society. Similarly, literacy rate in 1949 was 10%, in 2019 it was 98%.

    This interview was done in 1985. I read her book "China in the Year 2001" many years ago and found many of her views then not agreeable. She was rather radical and sympathetic to Mao at that time. This interview prodvided a more mature and balanced view on China with some correct foresight. She was really candid, intelligent and with a heart.

    As an admitted sociopoliticoeconomic conservative, I'll nevertheless acknowledge the shortcomings of the politicians who espouse that cause...esp our current Prez. So, for the worthy lady to endorse Mao, given the the human toll that can be laid to his account, is a remarkable (am at the moment hard up for a more suitable word) statement.
    In all candor, one must also acknowledge how much of the ills that afflicted China in the past century can be laid at the door of the West.
    It anyone is entitled to speak well (or ill) of the man, it's one of his own countryfolk. I'll leave it at that.

    But those Mao mistakes she dismisses were colossal: yes, 1-2 million died from hunger in the ROC for various reasons per year but Mao killed 20-30 million in just 15 years and a large chunk of those were unnecessary, (oh, just "an experiment" as she says here) about equally bad I estimate. The Mongolians, Tibetans and Uyghurs might disagree with her praise and apologizing for all things Chairman Mao. This woman wrote a book for public sale about her love and relationship for an Australian man, made money from it, and then rejected the Hollywood portrayal completely, a bit hypocritical. If she were alive today, she might be a major apologist for Xi's new imperialism me thinks, not to mention all the stealing by the "creative" PRC of British/American/Japanese and other technical secrets. A confused woman with huge identity crises it seems.

    • @xinfuzhang1919
      @xinfuzhang1919 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Have you been to China ? You appear to be heavily brain washed by Western media demonising of China.. China's treatment of national minorities is many times better than how the Anglo Saxon America, Canada and Australia treat the natives and the minorities.
      While China's national minorities like the Uygurs, Tibetans, Mongolians still retain their language, land and culture that cannot be said of the natives and minorities in US, Australia and Canada, where they are discriminated, marginalised, persecuted , robbed of their land and their culture and language totally destroyed and supplanted by the Anglo Saxon.

      @@xinfuzhang1919 I've been to China about a dozen times but more importantly have taught and loved Han Chinese, Mongolians, Tibetans, Uighurs and other ethnic minorities from the PRC for over 32 years with my first visit to southern China in 1988 and most recently in 2018. Nevertheless, the cultural affinity card is an old canard - one can learn through people, travel, films, docs, and books etc. Now and then, I tune into this guy: serpentza - who has lived in China for 20 years and has family there and many friends ex-pat and native, and who speaks Mandarin and I believe one local dialect as well. He offers interesting takes on the CCP especially from an outsider's inside view. My Mongolian colleague (Inner, or Southern as he prefers) is especially informative on many matters Chinese. My Uighur students of recent years have explained how scared they are of the CCP informant network within Japan, and we have talked many times about the re-education camps over the past three years there in his homeland which he calls East Turkestan. The CCP especially with this worldwide pandemic is about to hear from all of us soon by the summer of 2021 once this virus is tamed more-or-less, and it is bound to get ugly and rightfully so.
      Mentioning what the WASPs did, do, and have done to minorities is something of a non-sequitur as my comments were directed toward the excesses of Maoism and now Xi-ism, which deserve loads of scrutiny, and by the fact I don't defend such actions of the past by "Anglo Saxons" and everyone else involved for that matter. I've done so most recently in Hawai'i, for example, the Stolen Kingdom! Clearly there needs to be a reckoning with the CCP, and it is unlikely to be pretty considering the nativism and populism now many years re-emergent in the West and in places like The Philippines, the overall pride factor, and the political immaturity of many non-emigrant Chinese.
