The Devastating Death Of Emily Jones

- Bolton, 2020. When 7-year-old Emily Jones went to the park with her father on Mother's Day, she was excited to see her mom there and ride around the park on her scooter. The peace and quiet of that afternoon would be shattered when a shocking and brutal act of violence was carried out.

The man who ran after the perpetrator and pinned her down is a true example of “not all hero’s wear capes.” I believe that if he hadn’t risked his own life for the justice and protection of those around him, that she never would have been found or convicted as the police force are also a struggling sector.
It’s devastating to hear that another incident like this has to happen to show that the mental health sector is woefully underfunded, and crying out for help and a complete overhaul. My heart goes out to Emily and her family 💔 rest in peace little one.
100% agree, well said
Yes, well said!
The Mother Nature Sector is woefully overpopulated. Besides; give the Mental Sector your damn Money. Problem, solved.

The fact emily was trying to get to her mum and was attacked is just heartbreaking
...On Mother's Day, no less.
With her father not far away i just can't let myself think of what poor Emily was thinking when she was attacked. She didn't just take her young life she took her innocence. She left this world seeing real evil. Everything is beyond sad and tragic about this case. Mental health failed that women and the Justice system failed Emily. May you rest easy little angel. Sending lots of love to her family and loved ones. Im so sorry for your loss.😊
Every mother's day will be particularly horrific. I couldn't live if something happened to one of my children.
Dad just behind her and mom just ahead.. I cannot fathom 😭
What a tragedy. How many times does someone have to cause serious harm before being permanently removed from society. Whether it’s a mental health defense or not, the public needs to be protected. Justice failed this beautiful girl and her family.
No the UK needs to take more immigrants.
@@qwertyuiop-ke7fswhat a STUPID thing to say. Do you just need attn that badly or are you really that ignorant?
I agree. There should be three things considered in prosecuting and sentencing a crime:
1.) the crime/outcome itself--what happened and what was the result?
2.) the intent/situation--were there extenuating circumstances which make this understandable, an isolated incident, an accident, etc.? (This is where the "justice" comes into play--what's a just punishment?)
3.) the danger one poses to others in the future-- regardless of illness, "diminished capacity," etc., can they be trusted to be out and about ever? If not, they should never be free.

I agree with Emily's dad and mum. Altionna is not safe to walk the streets ever again. I can't decide whether mad or bad or both, but you don't put a knife in your bag if you're not entertaining at least a thought of violence. How was the health trust allowed to conduct an internal review? It should have been an external, independent review. They're not supposed to adjudicate on their own behaviour. There were so many red flags all along the way, and poor defenceless little Emily reaped the bitter harvest.
How can any parent cope with this happening to their child. There are no words.. Just devastating!!

I met a man once at a drug crisis center, it was on the same campus as the shelter, and a this man would agree to live under the crisis centers rules to avoid the shelter, which is a nasty place (all men's shelters tend to be bad).
I became friendly with him and after some days, he told me about why he was there. He lost all will to work and do anything after losing his own young daughter.
A man had a psychotic break, schizophrenia hit him later than usual, no drugs or anything. He suddenly thought demons were coming for him and everyone else.
He grabbed one demon, stabbed it, cut it's head off. In reality, it was this little girl.
He said to me he feels individuals like this should be locked away forever like any murderer. I didn't debate the point with him at all because it'd be cruel, but I think it's a lot more nuanced than that.
This lady here... It sounds like she wanted to kill a human. But people who just have psychosis hit them out of nowhere, and do something, having no idea what they've done... Someone like that, if they can later be made to be safe, actually safe... I dunno.
Hard calculus to be done and it should be done case by case for sure. This lady seems just evil to me. But the guy in the story I'm mentioning? Much more complex

As someone who takes medication and struggles with mental health every day for over 40 years, I find this horrifying. I'm very torn with things like this. I mean, we don't allow alcohol or drugs to be used as an excuse for murder. Should someone who chooses not to take their medication, plans a murder, carries it out, and has no remorse be allowed to use her mental health as an excuse?
A minimum of 10 years is just ... well, stupid.
Dude this is not the same. Schizophrenia is a very serious and psychotic illness. I hate it when people make assumptions and no nothing about medicine and science.
Yes she deserves to be in jail, but schizophrenia doesn't work the way you mentioned. The system is more at fault here.
@@CW-rx2jsYou are right.... schizophrenia is much different. My son has it and is an adult. He will take medication for a short time and then starts thinking he is being poisoned and stops taking it. We haven't found any medications that work on the severe paranoia he experiences. Have gone through this for years and my heart breaks for him. He has moments of clarity but one little thing will trigger this horrible mental illness. When I look at my very normal sons and grandchildren, I give thanks that they have no mental or physical problems. But I feel for those who are not as lucky as our family has been. I had a sister who had what is now known as Asperger’s syndrome, but in 1933 when she was born, Doctors knew that she had a high I.Q., very unsocial tendencies, but they had no name for what ailed her. She couldn’t handle being in a room with large numbers of people, and during her school years, in the classroom she was totally withdrawn. Her marks were excellent, but it was always noted on her report cards that she did not participate in school, or classroom activities. Of course she was shunned by her classmates, but there was nothing anyone could do about that. She was the oldest in our family, and although I was the youngest, 10 years separating us, I always felt very protective of her. My mother and father were very loving and kind to her, and the other members of our family, so we were truly blessed. We lived in a village in Ireland, where families looked out for each other, and were kind and caring of those who faced difficulties in their lives.
I hope and pray that one day researchers will discover just what causes Schizophrenia and other debilitating mental disorders, and find a cure that will give those people affected a normal life. God Bless you and all your family. Greetings from Canada.🇨🇦

Happened around the corner from me this. My girls (10 & 11) won't go back to that park. RIP Emily, such a tragic loss
So horrific! 😢
Emily's dad has aged 20 years. I simply cannot imagine the nightmare their life turned into in a split second. I genuinely don't understand why patients are allowed to come off injected medication that helps them avoid psychotic episodes. Obviously the person taking these mediations will want to come off them. It's up to the professionals around them to be cautious and move slowly. She was a dangerous woman, and there were so many opportunities to change the path she was on before she murdered this beautiful wee lassie.
True, she was mentally ill but she had the awareness to plan this and carry it out. It was her choice to stop taking medication
It was changed to 10 years 8 months but she couldn’t be released until she mentally is no longer a danger which could be never
Não há medicação nenhuma que cure a maldade ! 😮
This one made me cry. To have your darling child taken in front of you like that must have been unspeakable for her parents. Sadly I'm not surprised with the sentence. The UK and Australia 🇦🇺 where I live - needs an overhaul of sentencing guidelines. I understand that it wasn't a murder conviction, but it still doesn't seem like enough.
She got a life sentence.
Murder is murder regardless. You have to have something wrong with you at some level to take another life whether you are a psycho or sociopath murder is murder and you should never be freed.
@@geniepsm5127 Absolutely right.
UK and Australia are notorious for being lenient on sentences. Parts of the US are as well, others are very harsh. Its all so sad.
I read this not having gotten to the end and now I know I don't want to . I can't tell U how many cases I've watched from those two parts of the world and it's ridiculous how lenient they r for murder r rape r both . A man went to his ex girlfriends childhood home and locked the door and stabbed her over 200 times , cut off her ears , her breast and nose and only received 16 years , he wasn't mentally ill just angry because she had broken up with him , heer professor whom was much older than her , it's disgusting . In this case , I feel that because she attacked a little child and not an adult , I believe she should never be free again , ever . It's sad that this woman was sold to some man because of her father owning money but this precious sweet little girl had nothing to do with that and I hope this woman will never be released again , ever . I'm so very sorry for Emily and her parents and family and friends , She deserves better , so much better and I think this woman was just evil .
How tragic. She had been saying for years she would kill someone, what a giant red flag missed. The incident with her mother shouldve been considered attempted murder so she could get committed to help back then. The systems society have in place are a joke, until someone does something serious the system doesnt step in.

I don't blame Emily's father for not
forgiving her murderer, if that was

l would either, she needs to stay behind bars for the rest of her life to protect the public.🙁
Same. Screw forgiveness if you murder my kid ffs. If it helps some victims families to forgive then fine but it wouldn't help me.
Forgiveness is a complex thing. I certainly wouldn't judge anyone who doesn't forgive. I would struggle to forgive too. I admire those who are able to and choose to forgive though, for the sole reason that forgiveness means cutting all emotional ties.
Without forgiveness, the person who wronged us remains a part of our lives. They continue to occupy our thoughts and emotions. We carry the memory of who they were and what they did in our bodies. Once we forgive, we can let go, and they are gone. Their existence becomes irrelevant.
In a tragic situation as this, I would aim for forgiveness, but goodness knows if I'd be successful in that.
People who forgive murderers are liars.
Honestly she's lucky she only got tackled and sat on and wasn't killed with her own damn knife

The Home Office as well. If we had a working border and didn't allow people from anywhere to enter the country and stay forever then Emily would still be alive, as would many others.
The coroner was talking out of his a*se. There were plenty of red-flags in the weeks, month and years prior to her attacking a young child in the park but nobody was listening.
This highlights the problem with care in the community and especially the care for people suffering from mental health.
When I worked in community care I remember visiting one young chap who used to squat in the corner of the room of his house and in total darkness. He was totally in fear of the world around him, but couldn’t say exactly what it was he feared. He was grateful when we eventually got him back into the local mental health ‘arc’.
Sadly, there are many people who cannot cope with living in the community. I am glad that life inside an institution is a lot better now than it was in the days of the asylums, but we tend now to treat people with delusion only at the times when their delusion is at its worse and then when they learn to say the right things to the doctor they send them home and back to face the fears that sent them to hospital in the first place. At home there is nobody to encourage them to take their medication, especially if the care workers cannot access the home.
I’m also guessing that the team that were charged with ‘monitoring’ Eltiona in the community, had limited training on how to deal with people with mental health issues. They probably breathed a sigh-of-relief when their knocking went unanswered.
Of course, NHS England and the Department of Health will say they are reviewing their procedures and that will be the last comment they make on this issue until the next time something like this happens. The present system clearly isn’t fit for purpose. As always happens, you have these departments making excuses for the fact they failed in their duty-of-care.

*Between Feb and May 2017: Left the hospital (where she was being detained) without permission and went to a house at 5am to speak to a 13 year old child. She was armed with a knife.
*May 2017: Deemed fit for release from the hospital.
*March 2018: Not feeling well, she requested to go back on injections. Says she’s having hallucinations again.
*11 March 2020: First meeting with her mental health worker in three months and also her last.
*22 March 2020: Arrested in the park having murdered a six year old child. She has wire around her toes, yet the doctor who examined her didn’t think this pointed to any form of mental disorder??? I can hear the sound of stable doors being locked shut whilst the stallion who recently resided there is nowhere to be seen.
Mental Health facilities were all being closed, and ‘care in the community’ was trumpeted. It doesn’t work most of the time. Our local Psychiatric Hospital was closed for in patients-recently it has started to reopen wards. Mental health is greatly underfunded
Those still working in the mental care sector are heroes, as are most NHS workers who have suffered real term pay cuts of up to 35%, whilst expecting to do more and more with less and less. Since 2013, specifically. Did they not think less teachers, special education centres, libraries, the likes of Sure Start, police (down 20k, courts cut in half) , doctors, nurses, MH workers, firefighters (Grenfell) etc in tbe name of austerity (a political choice. Where do you think those 'savings' ended up...? Because borrowing has never been higher even though interest rates are obscene. Our streets should be paved with gold given Tory spending!) wouldn't have a huge impact on society? 1% of rape cases end in court. But the Bullingdon Club members (Johnson etc trashed restaurants, burnt 50£ notes infront of the homeless) were always going to unaffected as their inherited wealth (and my God, they protected that) would never suffer the consequences. Their wealth shielded them.
Please don't demonise those in the public sector left. They are anything but lazy, work many, many unpaid hours for something they're devoted to. The. Resouces. Of. 10. Years. Ago. Have. Gone 😢 Their pay reduced year on year and yet they're demonised in the right-wing - in-bed-with 21:16 -the-tories press for finally saying enough. Direct blame at the policy makers. No social worker is in it for the money?! But their work load is obscene. Only the government is responsible. If they cared about MH, community support, education, health etc etc they'd fund it. They don't
GREAT COMMENT!!!! ALL FACTS! (Im from the US) It's soooooo damn sad the government doesn't give a damn or get that mental health is a real crisis! The system failed this woman! This killing was AWFUL but their hate should be towards anyone worker that didn't do their job!!! In the US there is no house calls or monitoring. I have yet to hear from our government on the topic of mental health and the changes that need to happen. They fund so much crap out to other countries or do the stupiest sh!t with it like new fancy light poles or flowers SERIOUSLY! EDUCATION IS KEY!
If anyone has a family member who „hears voices“ they are potentially having a psychosis. Over a very short period of time ( a handful of weeks) this can develop into full blown psychosis/schizophrenia - if untreated. This woman‘s sister contradicts herself: on the one hand she says her sister was behaving strangely, hearing voices and disconnecting boilers etc. Then the same sister says the psychiatrist is wrong? A psychiatrist has studied the brain and hearing voices is highly predictive of psychosis. Antipsychotics work on the specific doperminergic pathways to control brain signalling and functioning. There are side effects as the same doperminergic pathways control other aspects of functioning. It is so difficult to manage whilst drugs are still in the developmental stage to be more target specific on brain proteins. After over 1,000,000 research reports no cure has been found for psychosis - only treatments to alleviate this terrible brain disease. There are different typeset psychosis too, drug induced or brain disorder through disease. 1-3.5% of the population are diagnosed/suffering with psychosis/schizophrenia, so please be assured that most harm is self inflicted through suicide and self harm rather than attacks like presented here. RIP little angel. It‘s truly heartbreaking the unexpectedness of your passing and my heart goes out to her parents who clearly loved this little girl very much.
Any parent that encourages their child NOT to take antipsychotics should be investigated as they interrupting the treatment of a very serious condition. If the mother as alleged in this upload said her daughter did not require the treatment when she is not a doctor then she should be charged in this case. That is care in the community.
They're just covering their arses so they're not sued.

Poor darling Emily. My heart breaks for her parents. I cannot even comprehend the pain they would be feeling. The mental health system not only let down the perpetrator, they let down the victim and the victims friends and family. It affects the whole community. I just don’t understand why funding for mental health services is always so pitiful.
@sinda_hella the perpetrator shouldn’t even have been in the U.K. She arrived illegally in a lorry and claimed ‘asylum’, but was from Albania - a country with no war and a holiday destination! Our immigration authorities are a joke and British people are being put at risk by their failure to screen anyone who comes here.
Once again, this channel's presentation of horrible crime cases like this one is on point. The sensitive, factual treatment of the events themselves, as well as providing appropriate before-and-after context, is exemplary.
Absolutely heartbreaking. Seeing that photo of Emily with her face painted is making me cry. As always, your videos are give great insight and respect to the victims.
Me and my sister have schizophrenia. I grew up with her and my controversial opinion is that she was dangerous because of her personality and not because of her mental health issue. The mental health issues bring on mostly paranoia and haluccinations. The decision to harm was only hers. She stabbed me in the head and attacked our father. I never felt like physically harming anyone. You can be paranoid and not be murderous. I take olanzapine and others. My sister committed suicide in 2020. I am only speaking on this issue based on my own experience. Relapses are real when medications are stopped. However, schyzofrenia can't be an excuse for murder. That said, prison is not the solution here unless the woman can be medicated in prison. If not, she might die in prison. If she doesn't, she will be freed in 10 years and she will kill again. In my opinion, she needs to be committed to a high security mental health facility for the rest of her life. There is no cure for schizofrenia and in particular, there is no cure for her violent nature. If anything we could conclude that not all schyzofrenic people are violent. Some of use are very troubled but peacefull. However, when violent, they are dangerous and lethal.
I hope this finds you and your family well your comment is spot on your so right it’s her personality not her condition this makes all other people that suffer this illness with mental health problems look like killers wen there not at all I’m feel so bad that they say it’s because of her mental health she’s evil threw and threw people with mental illness are not evil and don’t hurt others ❤
I think you're right. There is no one schizophrenic person out there. Each case has to be continuously assessed as a unique individual. Medicalising evil doesn't help matters. I don't think she killed Emily because she was psychotic, etc. She's just an awful person.
i know this is a few months old, but it’s so important to know that schizophrenia does not make you dangerous or evil. actually, people with psychosis are more likely to be a VICTIM than a criminal. My friend from high school has schizophrenia and he is so gentle and kind, his brain just works differently some of the time.
Such a tender presentation of this story ladies. Well done. RIP little Emily and peace to your family ❤

She knowingly killed an innocent child. If she has the presence of mind to get up, get neatly dressed, navigate her way, make purchases, etc, she is absolutely culpable of murder. She absolutely should be punished and not given any more comfort than any other murderer. Hate is the root of murder and must not be coddled.
Barely coherent nonsense. How does being able to navigate mean you're not psychotic?
Agree. She even had the ability to save herself and try to evade capture. Sick of mental illness being used as an excuse.

@danielelindsey2213 She committed an unforgivable crime; and my heart goes to to her entire family. However, I do feel your comment undermines mental illness; a lot of people who are schizophrenics can give the appearance of acting normal/planning etc.; it's sort like saying how can someone be depressed when I saw them laughing yesterday. Mental illness is a awful problem that needs to be taken very seriously, and sadly the system here failed everyone involved.
My mom has schizophrenia & she would never do something like this. It’s truly about the type of treatment, help & support they receive. My little sister has been great on meds for the last 20 yrs also. I could never imagine her doing something like this. She is such a gentle little soul and always has been. She got quite unwell for awhile, and had spent that time on another med till she was ok again, but now back on her original one that has kept her well and I hope now at 61 she can stay that way.
I was diagnosed in my early 20s with schizophrenia and later it was downgraded to schizoeffective disorder. But while it's effects for me are not quite as severe as some experience, I definitely have a thought disorder.

You don't think her being given to a man to pay off a debt is an act of exploitation? I think it could be considered that. She may have told people she lied about being exploited, but I think that could have been a defense mechanism. She had clearly been through some stuff. Regardless, I agree she should've been locked up somewhere. She was a danger to the public, wherever she lived.
smh, she just needs to be locked up WHEREVER. also, NHS sucks anyways…
@atlasbonds6095 I don't give a damn what she had been through no child deserves this. She is a grown woman and should of been taking her medication ! She was in the right mind when she stopped taking it. Shame on you for trying to defend this monster.
@@Aj14x you’re white. i’m going to assume you also want her to be deported back to her own country… SHAME ON YOU!! When someone is a danger to society, it is imperative to be locked up WHEREVER (especially where the crime took place). Because if you think about it, if she had been deported, couldn’t she have been given a lighter sentence? Her country prob don’t give a damn about that child…
ALSO, the original commenter isn’t 100% defending her. You only took one thing they said and took it to a whole opinion. Go back to knitting granny…
I really don't think its coincidence she "randomly" chose to attack a child on mothers day like that, especially when she went and bought the knives and sat and waited for a victim to pass her. Poor little Emily.
She seemed to have issues with her own mother, so I wonder if her choice to take the life of a child on Mother’s Day reflected that?
@@missdenisebee It makes you wonder but who can really say what goes inside a diseased creatures mind, I just don't think the timing was coincidence and whatever the reason was then it was clearly malicious premeditation.
I truly believe the sentencing laws for murderers in the U.K. and Australia are worse than the ones here in the U.S. and that is incredibly sad.
She got a life sentence.
@@eadweard. I know that. But the minimum is 10 years so she could possibly get out then.
'murderers'.
there's your word. She wasn't convicted of murder so she didn't get a minimum of 10 years as a murderer
@@TrevM0nkey She _did_ get a minimum of 10 years.
@@eadweard. yes I know. I didn't say she didn't. I said she didn't get it as a murderer; it wasn't 10 years for a murder conviction. It was a minimum of 10 years, 8 months for manslaughter with a diminished responsibility. If she was convicted for murder it'd have been longer
If it’s true that she showed no signs of relapse or deterioration then she clearly manipulated the system if she had infact relapsed, she knew that hiding these symptoms would fool the system therefore she knew exactly what she was doing, if this be true then she is guilty of murder and premeditated at that. I hope she is never released and ends up in a prison.
I agree it’s so awful.
Here here...
So she went off her meds on purpose so she could murder a child for no reason and go to jail for life? Think it through. Yes it's a horrible tragedy but don't be so quick to blame.
Please be sensible, she was clearly sick.
Death Penalty
Oh my goodness this was a hard one… my heart breaks for Emily’s parents and family, teachers and school mates as well as their community. Losing a child is horrible in any way but to lose your child like this?? Unbelievable. Her parents show what strength truly is. They used their pain to fuel their fight for justice for Emily and raise awareness about how the mental health system has been and did fail. The perpetrator should never have been able to get to a point in her mental health to do this ESPECIALLY since she had mental health care. She had access. Her providers were doing the bare minimum to push through their caseload and weren’t paying attention to her situation. You can’t tell me that after not being on her medication for over a month they didn’t see a marked difference in her mental state. If she had an appointment just 11 days prior to this horrific incident they full on should’ve been able to see she wasn’t “normal”. I have a child who has severe mental health issues. She spent two years in a residential facility. Now she’s 18 and lives with me and probably will forever. I have been unable to find her a mental health provider that accepts our insurance that are taking new patients. I’ve been dealing with that problem for now going on 3 years. To have access to mental health services here in the US is horrible. Mental health is usually a main driver in these crimes yet the government doesn’t seem to be doing anything to correct the issue. They talk about mental health awareness like we aren’t aware, yet we’ve been aware of this problem as citizens for decades. It’s a poor excuse. They need to be held accountable. As far as this perpetrator’s sentence? It’s a travesty of justice. It’s a joke.
Rest in Peace little Emily. The world is a bit darker without your glowing light. I hope you have the most beautiful wings in Heaven, that your light is bright and warm forever, and that you’re always watching over your mommy and daddy. You’re sorely missed. ❤

One of my best friend's daughter was schizophrenic. She heard voices telling her to kill her mother. She was sectioned, allowed out for the weekend to stay with her mother. Her mother returned her to the hospital at 13.45, handed her over to the nurse. 15 minutes later she was dead, having stood in front of the neighbouring motorway. Legal process ongoing against the psychiatric hospital for negligence. Mental sickness is horrible. RIP dear little Emily and my thoughts to her parents and family.
You would think a mental hospital would know what behaviours these individuals possess and display??? People in psychosis think that whats going on in their heads is real, hence, why they act on it. If they are saying they are going to kill, then they are going to kill.
People who say they hear voices are liars. The voices are their own thoughts that they sometimes don’t realise they are doing. They all say voices and all say they were also abused. But are liars.
@@TransitionedToASharkNot when they have schizophrenia. Don't throw around assumptions when you don't understand the effects that has on someone's mental health. It's why when they are properly medicated and checked that these voices, which are symptoms go away. And schizophrenia isn't just voices, it affects every aspect of a person's senses. The failure of the mental health system leads to many people to fall through the cracks and give into the intrusive voices.

It’s starting to make sense to me why people are killing each other, there is absolutely no retribution for it. Prime example is this story. This woman comes to UK and stabs a little girl in the neck and the child dies and she gets 8 years in prison. That’s not really even a sentence!! What a total joke of a justice system.

The system and the "experts" failed Emily and the community. Sounds like they're passing the buck whenever possible and taking no responsibility. Mental illness is terrifying. It’s so scary that someone (including you or I) could just lose their entire grasp on reality and start to have such strong delusions that they replace the reality you perceive now. People who are in a real psychotic state perceive their delusions to be 100% real to them. Perception IS reality.
Scientists have been experimenting on the human brain for years, this we know as fact. Who's to say they've been able to manipulate people into doing things they'd never consider doing. So many murders say that they did it because of "the voices in their head telling" them to do it or they say the devil made them or the ones they murder appear to be demons. Many movies are even made about it. Just thinking outside the box so don't come for me. 😉
That mental card is pulled too often.
So right. I witnessed a colleague of mine dissociate over a period of about a month. It started with wearing completely inappropriate clothing and making strange assertions and suggestions in meetings and ended with a terrible episode with an associate. Nothing by comparison to a tragic outcome like this. But it's shocking and sad to see someone talented and competent completely lose their grip on reality and openly express their delusion.
Hmmm interesting that this slab of trash had enough wits to pick someone who couldn't fight the evil slime off.
@@RebeccaSurber-vw5wiIt is, by people who are not genuinely psychotic.

I work at the Mental Health Assoc. and have worked several of these cases. We were signing release papers for a guy who used his pen as a weapon and stated he was going to "gouge our eyes out" as he attacked us both...police were called and he was STILL released that day. I've got stories ppl would not believe...it's such a tricky disease when ppl use their mental illness as excuses
Not even arrested for threatening behaviour? Groan.
@manichairdo9265 he was escorted off the property and free to the public...and we legally cannot hold these ppl after a certain period of time. We've had to release men and women into the streets that were a clear danger to themselves and others... its really very sad

I have suffered from mental illness since I was a child. I'm 50 now. I have harmed myself in various ways but I would absolutely never harm anyone else especially a child. Also I am not on medication due to it actually making me worse. This is a very sad situation for that little girl and her family. I hope this woman never sees the outside world again. RIP SWEET ANGEL.
Yes make this about yourself attention seeker
Everybody is different. We won't do XYZ that doesn't mean others aren't sadly so mentally off that they'll harm someone.
Why do you believe it to be a mental illness? Have you ever considered that it could be of demonic oppression?
Being the mother of a son who has had mental issues since his late teens, l cannot understand families who let their problematic offspring tend to themselves, alone in this world..Why was asn't someone in her family making sure she either took her meds or was sectioned into a plavd sphere shd would be 'safe' from harming other people. The irresponsibility here amazes me. I take responsibility for my son ALL THE TIME, I am very aware of what could happen to him or others if he wasn' to being looked after.
I've seen so many tragedies happen due to the selfish decision to not take the prescribed medication.

How can anyone be so cruel. An innocent child. :-(
Living in Bolton, it makes you think, what if I had been there, could I have stopped it, and when I look at the date, I would have been on my way to see my own mother that day, and at that time could have easily passed the killer without realising what was about to happen. I do remember being at my mum's and seeing the air ambulance flying overhead. These events don't hit home until they happen to you, someone you know or in this case, in your hometown. It's such an indescribable feeling of loss of compassion for the victim's families.
If we had proper borders, the little girl would still be alive.
The fact she casually strolled past countless potential victims and decided to wait upon deciding a poor helpless defenceless girl tells me her mind had perspective.

My heart goes out to Emily's parents. My own daughter was murdered at 25 by her boyfriend, i.e., 2nd to domestic violence and addiction. Her death sent me into a depressive episode so severe I attempted suicide. As a psychologist myself, I did everything I could to get her treatment, many, many times. A child's senseless death is simply awful. This space is not enough for all I'd like to say. But for her parents I can say I understand your pain. And, there is NO such thing as "closure." My pain has changed over time, transformed by researching PTSD, and trying to write a book on the intersection of addiction & PTSD, specifically traumatic events in early childhood. As a former mental health practitioner I can assert that the SYSTEM is FRACTURED. Fracture is the best term, I believe, because follow up is so often LOST. Think about the term itself. Cut off, no connection, huge spaces, splintered. And then, THE PERSON HERSELF becomes FRACTURED. In this case a diagnosis of paranoia, whether due to schizophrenia, a delusional disorder, or whatever (sarcasm intended), should alert a clinician to the fact that violence toward self or others is a distinct possibility. One must know what questions to ask, how to elicit what thoughts, intentions and plans the patient may have. Hence, the clinician MUST assume the hypothesis of potential violence. But BEFORE technique, one must help the patient TRUST the clinician, which takes TIME. Yes, prediction of violence IS very difficult, and often simply wrong. Needed are better studies, retrospective, in determining who became violent and what symptoms were documented, AND those ignored or simply not addressed. Again, there isn't space to discuss ALL the points I need to make to help prevent violence. Obviously, it includes better training & education, which requires money & time. In my case my first clinical training was in crisis intervention, starting between the 1st & 2nd year of my master's degree. I became certified during my 2nd of 5 yrs earning my Ph.D. This training enabled me to see a wide variety of patients with many diagnoses, especially those with suicidal and/or homicidal ideation, intent or plans. Let's get more pieces of this massive puzzle identified and corrected.
RIP to your daughter and sending love to you ❤

I've been to that park so many times and I remember that happening . It shocked the whole community . So sad 😟
Such an awful case, so much respect to Tony for his actions that day. I understand the manslaughter charge over murder but I do believe that as she has previously refused to take her medication she could be a danger to the public and herself so should have received a longer sentence. RIP Emily 💔
RIP sweet little Emily 💗
Deepest sympathy to her Family and friend's ❤❤
I totally agreed that she had a mental illness and the finding of manslaughter. I also agree with the life sentence, but not the 10 year part. She had shown repeatedly over years that she couldn't be relied on to take her medication, and that during those episodes she was harmful to herself, her family and the greater community. She needs to be watched 24/7 and they can't do that if she is free. And there is no doubt in my mind that she would do something similar again if given her freedom, so she needs to stay locked up for the rest of her life to protect others. The asylum piece is an interesting issue. I am a big believer in helping people fleeing danger in their homelands, regardless of which country they come from. However, I also believe that people in the receiving country have a right to be safe from any danger an asylum seeker could potentially pose if there is something in their background that shows that this is a possibility. Therefore, extreme care needs to be taken to ensure that asylum seekers will be an asset to the country they are trying to enter and a thorough background check and interview process needs to be taken, and then reviewed in order to find anything that was missed, as in this case.
Just as medical staff would be declared liable if they did not treat an acute haemmorrhage, mental health staff are responsible for providing timely treatment to prevent deterioration. The patient cannot be held responsible.
I used to work in the Community for over 10 years and had to do Welfare checks ,administer Medications to Patients etc
The only time I got really wary and a bit freaked out was with the Patients with Mental Disorders because you never knew what could just set them off
There was many, many People that I wasn't at all satisfied they were left to their own devices it was pure madness on the Psychiatrists part to allow this
Alot of it is to save money by keeping them living "independently"😪😪
