In Soul, the premise of the story is existentialism. Both Joe and 22 are attempting to discover the meaning of life. Both of them are searching for a deeper meaning, in the grand scheme of things. Wish's premise is nonexistent, except for the notion that Asha believes that everyone should get everything they ever wanted. Her intentions feel superficial. King Magnifico is only cruel to be cruel, and neither one of them has any real agency. There's no real character growth or development. And why was it so crucial for Asha to ensure that everyone gets their wish? They seemed pretty content, otherwise. Joe, on the other hand, thinks that he knows what will make him happy, which is being a musician. But then he realizes that all he needs to do is just live life to its fullest. 22 helps him see that. At least these two have a meaningful connection. Asha doesn't have this with anyone. Perhaps Disney had forgotten how to write stories with purpose, at this point.
I love your video on story structure and the film comparisons between Wish and Soul. Wish definitely lacked character and story developments, but Soul had a more structured skeleton for developments and arcs.
Great video! I struggle handling this structure in my own storytelling, and seeing a side by side example of good versus bad is extremely helpful. More comparisons on this topic would be welcomed!
Great video! I really like the breakdown of what makes a structured and emotionally resonant story, and how it's necessary to have your characters change and grow in reaction to events, not just the event themselves.
It kinda seems to me like wish's villain is a more relatable character than the heroine - more developed or something😂. idk maybe if we got to see more of her personality and goals in the movie the themes wouldn't seem so forced?
If you ask me, Wish is suffering from phase 1, and that we must do something about it to make Disney100 proper. From its animation to songs, story and length. Will those out there join me?
Great video 🫶 and i do belive that it would get the views it deserved with a different thumbnail IMO, its kinda "confusing". If you want a suggestion id be down to help this video has so much potential
thanks for the suggestion and your kindness, the video currently has three thumbnails , it's a test to compare and see which one works better, but I think I know which one was shown to you.
@@scenesandstructures I saw the one with Wish and Soul juxtaposed with a cross and a tick and I liked it. It made me click the link. Great video, btw. Those are basics, of course, but helped me see the matter of structure more clearly, as I'm working on my first real piece of fiction.
@@missAlice1990 glad it was helpful, there are more videos on writing tips and structure that I'm working on, hope they can help you with your first piece.

Asha is such a beautifully designed character, it's a shame she didn't get an amazing story too. Great video, btw!
Your description of plot versus story finally got the concept into my head, thank you so much!
glad it was helpful

Nothing wrong with a villian who is evil for no reason
Yeah, I was not a big fan of this movie
YOU’RE COMPARING WISH TO SOUL!!
Well at least Wish didn’t turn their black character into an animal the whole movie! 🙄
But it was ACTUALLY a good story. Did you even watch the movie???
