- On a cold December day GWR King Class 6024 King Edward I hauls 'The Christmas Bristolian' from Bristol to London Paddington and return. This was to be the first time in over two years for the King to go into and out of Paddington. The run ran over the Great Western Mainline which Kings ran 'The Bristolian' only on fridays with 8 coaches during the days of steam.
Wearing the authentic headcode 473, we first see the King at Christian Malford just outside of Chippenham, as the morning was still quite bleak. The next scene the sun shines over Twyford in Berkshire. To our suprise we find out the King is on the fast line, normally used for HSTs going at 125mph! She is seen roaring away out of Twyford towards Paddington, in an authentic scene for which Kings were a common sight to be seen during the late 1950's and early 60's.
In the evening, 6024 now on its return route is seen speeding past Didcot Parkway in the midst of the dark. After its water stop at Challow, 10 mins ahead of schedule and managing to get to my spot at the last minute, the King is seen finally at Chippenham on its final few miles to Bristol.
