- 6024 marked its last run to London before withdrawal with a truly wonderful performance on this Bristol to Paddington, Pathfinder Tour. Picking the train up at Dauntsey, "Spud" simply blasts up the bank in rapidly improving weather. A quick dash up the M4 got us to Sonning Cutting just in time to capture a spectacular pass with Great Western whistle fully open. For the return trip we visited Cholsey church where after visiting the grave of "Murder on the Orient Express" author: Agatha Christie, were kindly shown a recently discovered piece of lead hidden in the roof for the last 180 years. It looked to me like a representation of a "Planet" class loco named "Sun" (notice the backwards N), drawn by a roofer who must have been one of the earliest steam enthusiasts! and 6024 appropriately puts on a show to impress all steam enthusiasts, past and present, as it powers its way towards Didcot in the last of the evening light. By the time we got to Challow, the lights had already turned green as we set up in complete darkness on the busy main road, but with everything "cranked-up", the results were not too bad in the circumstances especially as we see and hear 6024 take the train back onto the mainline and head off towards Bristol and the very last of the light. What a special day! let's hope we see 6024 back before this route is desecrated by overhead wires!! Thank you to all involved with this tour.
Very enjoyable to watch, sheer poetry in motion. Built when Britain was truly great. Such a graceful engine. Thanks for sharing. All the best from Scotland. Garry
Hi Garry and thank you so much for such kind and impassioned comments. It is sad to think that all these open and uninterrupted views of the GWML have now been marred by overhead wires and gantries. Best regards, Alan
Brilliant shots there, I was at Didcot all day and saw her both ways, she pelted through both times, the first giving us the longest GW whistle i've ever heard! Andy
When you see the crossheads and the rest of the "power pack" working, makes you realize and appreciate the effort that went into making these Swindon built monuments so successful !!
Hi and thank you for your interesting comment. One could say that Brunels engineering principles were continued right through the lifetime of the G.W.R. Regards, Alan
Great panning shot at Cholsey Church, very impressive, and then with the power station etc, top shot. Thumbs up!
Outstanding piece of video Alan, fantastic shots of the King pounding through her old home territory, it's a shame she'll be leaving soon. Thumbs up & fav'd
Hi Kristian and thank you for your kind comments. The year has started well! the good weather and performance, and also a lot of luck in the two "bonus" shots!! Alan
excellent video as always, can't wait to film her when she comes to kingswear for her final run for a while, love this engine and great discription about the video
Hi Andy: thank you for your appreciation. We heard the whistles from the Didcot engine(s) during the afternoon at Cholsey. The footplate crew on KE1 definitely had the "last run" spirit about them!! Alan
Super footage and a terrific channel Alan, thanks, Lee.
Hi EM and thank you for your comments, I was really lucky to get the Sonning and Challow shots as I literally had only seconds to get both, but it made the day for me. Alan
Thanks for this excellent video. A really finely controlled start at Challow.
Absolutely brilliant, outstanding, superb video, what more can anyone say, the shot at Sonning Cutting was really something special for me, the whole video was excellent, thanks for sharing...Bill
Brilliant video Alan, great panning thru out. I do like the shot at Sonning cutting ,that was superb.& a lovely finish with her disappearing into the sunset.EM
Hi Tim and thank you for the very kind comments. According to Network Rail's document "Modernising the Great Western", electrification starts in 2014 and will be completed in 2016 between Paddington and Cardiff including Temple Meads to Bristol Parkway. So we have between 2 and 4 years to enjoy a clear view of this stretch of mainline. Alan
Hi and thank you for your kind comments, we will all be sad when Spud retires for overhaul, there is nothing quite like her on the mainline. Alan
Hi and thank you for the encouraging comment. The Cholsey shot was my main shot of the day and I was very lucky that the sun went below the horizon just in time!! Alan
Hi and thank you for the kind comment, glad you enjoyed. Alan
Fabulous!
I'll take that Michael! Your kind remark is very much appreciated. Best regards, Alan
Hi and thank you for the wonderful compliment, it is very much appreciated. Alan
Hi Sean and nice to hear from you again. Thanks you for the kind comments, hope to see you lineside sometime. Alan
Hi Ryan and thanks for the amusing comment. Don't forget, I've been filming steam from the very start of the Preservation era but it's true that I hav'nt been to these locations for some time. Maybe see you lineside for KE1's last run? Alan
Thank you for your very kind comments and your subsciption Lee, welcome aboard! Alan
Lovely video, very well edited ,,liked and fav ..thanks for sharing your work ,,from Sean :)
Hi and thank you for the kind remarks, it was a great day! Alan
@Steamclips Thanks Alan - that definitely increases the incentive to get out and see more over the next couple of years!
Hi Andrei and thank you for the kind comment. That coach stood out like a bad tooth! Alan
They were meant to bring king Edward ll to the mainline as well but sadly the plans were dropped so they’ve not made plans to get 6023 back to mainline running
I'm having thoughts that you got these clips from seeing my work that I've done in the past. Sonning Cutting and South Moreton being notable spots. A rare glimpse to see a steam service run on the fast line at Sonning as it sometimes gets put onto the slow.
some great locations there..its a like from me....
Great shots Alan, particularly enjoyed the epic footage from Sonning and the superb lighting effects as 6024 left Challow. Any idea how long we have until the wires appear? Hopefully a while still to enjoy steam on the Great Western Mainline as it should be! Thanks for sharing, Tim
There’s some good news work is almost done on 6024 hopefully it will be done by now and hopefully back on the mainline after that
Thanks for that Scott.
As always Alan
Awesome shot at Sonning. Where'd they get that InterCity coach from though?
Hi sir yow clippings are awesome these are grandpas of Indian Railway we missed these beasts, but here in your video we can able to see,

Hello and thank you for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated. King Edward 1 is nearing the end of overhaul and should be ready to return to the mainline soon. Best regards, Alan
