hey I dunno if I've ever mentioned this, but Incogni is a good service I think if you wanna get 60% off, you can do that at my super cool link incogni.com/camwing
it's very hilariously not a good service why are they paying youtubers out the nose for a service they'll subsidize 60% of the cost? Because we're their product How many of these awful advertisers need to be outted before we start noticing?
Sorry for the reupload, there was a copyright issue with one of the songs and since the video had only been up for a couple hours, it was easier to just replace it. So now you have to watch the whole thing again and share it with one million of your enemies
i just wanna say, i LOVE how you incorporate your child/nephew into your work it's incredibly cute that you let them get involved with you p.s. keep up the good work, your videos are a joy to watch
A Republican congressman recently came out in favor of child labor being preferable to providing school lunches. Obviously camwing agrees and has been exploiting his nephew for cheap or free labor. Up with child labor! Down with school lunches! Camwing for congress! /s
It's rare a TH-camr gets me to watch their ad reads. It's cute letting your kid in on the video making process. I bet they're gonna have fond memories about that for the rest of their life.
BRO YOU REUPLOADED THIS. it's fine except I was at 21:44 when I got a playback error. And genuinely thought you were doing a gag about like not getting back to the point or something and just say here staring for 3 minutes...
I'm a little disappointed when discussions of early 3D CGI don't mention what Jim Henson was doing in the late 80's and early 90's. Jim Henson Hour's Waldo, Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, it's really cool to see 3D blended not just with 2D animation, but with real-time puppetry! Like you said, 3D models are a bit like puppets. Henson studios was a leading force in mocap tech, and they knew how to build cartoony models that matched their puppetry style and weren't so uncanny. The puppet series Fogtown is using that same concept with all the updated rendering ability we have today. Real-time 3D rendered backgrounds that even pan and animate while the puppetry is done in-sync in front of a monitor. And you can barely tell, the monitor shots look way better than the occasional greenscreen used for unique effects.
I don't mind sitting through ad-reads for sponsors, seeing as I want all creators to get their bag in some way or another... But, credit where it's due: that was a solid ad-read and pretty funny, too. Didn't expect to be reminded of the sound at 13:43 outside of watching RussianBadger's videos, but you made me bust a gut laughing. Since I'm not pestered by marketing and don't need the service much as of now, here's an approximate amount I would have spent on a month of it. You made me laugh a lot with this video, so you earned it. c: Now, time to finish the video and get back to Blender.
Man, some of those horrifying ads stick with me to this day. The healthy eating one where the kid just like, unhinges his neck and throws his head at the fridge game me actual nightmares. Also Reboot was the shit. I know it looks janky now, but it was genuinely surprisingly good.
I love it when a great 2d animated youtuber who uses short clips to explain media starts talking about how good Reboot is, even with its limited graphics. Now if i had a nickel
Can we just appreciate how funny his ads are with the kid? Like I normally dont watch ads, but you, Jay Foreman and noodle always deliver something genuinely fun worth watching
Yup, and also Super Mario Galaxy, which is even more insane to me because that was live rendered CGI and it still looks better than whatever that thing was
21:13 To be fair there doesn’t seem to be much animation in the fight scenes either. These effects are pretty obviously achieved with a couple of key frames with no in-betweening and pans of a static images.
23:26 I've been waiting for this BEASTIES: TRANSFORMERS! Which fun fact was call that in Canada because Canadian broadcast standards don't allow direct advertise of violence to children anyways I really love Beasties: Transformers
The way your character looks so annoyed when you were being told what year it is is just so funny. You are really good at expressing emotions with that model!! It kills me every video you upload! Great job 😊
researching early cgi as a 3d artist (3d modeler over here!), is always so interesting! the differences between what we can do now (poly modeling, crazy ass particle systems, kickass shaders) and the early stages of cgi has always fascinated me!! great video!! :-D
The Spider-man montage to show the animation recycling was GLORIOUS. Funnily enough, I did happen to notice it as a kid. That aside, it looks REALLY fun when you splice them together. Like a poor man's version of that awesome shot in TMNT: Mutant Mayhem when it's showing the Turtles fighting smoothly, but the scenery cuts from location to location.
You forgot to mention that a lot of early CGI were done in specialized workstations, Jimmy Neutron was an early example of a Film and a TV series done using a personal computer and off the shelf software, this of course became more common in both 2D and 3D as time went on and programs became more accesible
Kinda besides the point but I loved Reboot when it came out, and its janky animation just felt like a stylistic choice at the time, and honestly I can still get behind that today.
Great video. Just one clarification: Gravity Falls is not just a very good looking show - it is a very good show in general! Uncle Stan alone increases the quality of every scene by 120%.
Great documentary. I love animation history. This was a fun watch and man some of those commercials really brought me back! I also really love your avatar guy. Despite the limited movements he's really fun to watch and very expressive.
I feel like the problem with GCI is just that soooooo many people early on didn't know what to do with the limited form of it that they had available, it's like the hyperrealistic stuff in spongebob: it's extremely jarring because that's not what the medium is really compatible with. Toy story 1 is a good example of using it in a way that works (obviously they also had a way larger budget but still): you can see how basically everything but the humans looks perfectly fine, because inanimate things don't really matter if they look perfectly accurate. Early GCI made everything look like plastic, so.. just have characters canonically made of plastic! Every time they tried to animate realistic things it just ended up punching a hole through the floor of the uncanny valley, i think the polar express is where it got juuuuuuust barely good enough to hang onto the other side of the cliffs of the uncanny valley with its fingertips.
To really understand how much CGI was treated as a novelty before Shrek cemented it, there's literally a video series by Odyssey Productions called The Mind's Eye. It had many contributors, including Mainframe, Will Vinton Productions, Pacific Data Images (PDI), The 3DO Company, and even Pixar.
The first two Toy Story movies were certainly beyond novelty. Shrek was a huge hit, providing real competition to Disney as their 2D features were floundering. I think its greatest contribution was its alternative brand of humor.
Do you know why Pixel art animation was not used in this time period other than games (considering pixel art can look amazing, and might have been possible to animate more detailed sprites if animation focused software was used)?
New to your channel and I gotta say, as someone who adores animation, I find myself struggling to focus on what you're saying because I LOVE how your avatar is animated. Genuinely thought it was 2D for the first two minutes or so. Lip-syncing is on point, the key frames are so strong and it's just downright nice to look at. Love the video and the topic!
Dude, Camwing, homie, my guy: thank you so much for making TH-cam videos. These projects are an absolute joy to watch and the passion that goes into each video is so evident. You're definitely in my top ten list of TH-camrs, up there with CGP Grey, DankPods, Best Guest, Benn Jordan, Internet Historian, Zefrank, Martincitopants, and SovietWomble. I don't have much to offer besides this humble "thank you" and "your work inspires me," so please accept this heart emoji as a token of my appreciation: ❤
I was traumatized as a child with the Gecko life insurance comercial where the two geckos straight up die. I have that awful song stuck in my head still.
The lighting is so interesting in the early 3D CGI being shown. Ok to be fair I use Eevee in blender but like the colored lights and shadows look pretty good
oh GOD that stupid little toenail goblin freaked me tf OUT. You think its bad enough when he pops it open like a car trunk but then he WEASLES HIS WAY IN UUUUGGGGHHHH
Yeah. It used the visual dissonance between the 2D and 3D to emphasise what was the virtual world or not, turning a weakness of hybrid animation into a stylistic flourish.
Futurama was quite possible the only 2-D animated show that I didn't mind the 3-D animated elements. Not because it looks any different from other shows that mix the two, but because it feels appropriate for the theme of the cartoon: _The Future_

i'm surprised you didn't mention south park. even though it looks like stop motion or 2d, it's actually made in a 3d software and they often incorporate 3d models surprisingly well
Beast Wars seemed so hard to get into as a new fan but the characters and writing hold up surprisingly well. I just have to ignore that I’m watching the Transformers equivalent of a bowling alley screen when you get a strike
I'm really happy to see Dragon Ball talked about in this context. I watched through the original and Kai over the last year and watching the procession of animation though the years (including the stuff you mentioned) was really fun and charming. I really appreciated not only watching Goku and the gang age and grow as fighters and people, as the animation got better and better. From Krillin entering the picture early on to the Tien arc closer to the middle of the OG, the difference is night and day, and doubly so from Tien to Namek. Its almost strange how the evolution of animation impacts the show as an ongoing experience, like the medium itself is growing alongside it, and it was special being a part of that journey for the first time. Rest in peace, Toriyama.
I won't lie, I didn't even know Gravity Falls used CGI in some of their episodes. With how seamless it was incorporated though, I'm not really all that surprised. Kudos to Gravity Falls.

I can't believe this guy actually thinks it's 1974. Thank goodness he had someone to correct him.
yeah i think he was in a coma for a while and it screwed up his concept of time
Get with the times, old man
What a tragedy
i felt so validated to hear that bit because i do that joke to myself a lot when a video uses the "The year is..." phrasing
Sorry for the reupload, there was a copyright issue with one of the songs and since the video had only been up for a couple hours, it was easier to just replace it. So now you have to watch the whole thing again and share it with one million of your enemies
but i dont have that many enemies q.q
You telling me I get to like two camwing videos in the same day??! Epic.
wow, hearting your own comment, this guy doesn't care about anybody but himself
You confused me for a sec
replaying the video with mute because you are a real 1
"Bad" CGI in Courage really helped increase the "creepy" fsctor.
I can imagine the 3D artists getting feedback:
-Wow this looks horrible
-So we need to fix it? :(
-No it's perfect, keep doing what you're doing
Fun Fact: The creator John R Dilworth said the Pharaoh being flat CGI was inspired by Parapa the Rapper.
i just wanna say, i LOVE how you incorporate your child/nephew into your work it's incredibly cute that you let them get involved with you
p.s. keep up the good work, your videos are a joy to watch
Kid better get a cut of that ad money
Does he voice Sponsorship Horse?
Ad hawk and sponsorship horse are 2 of his nephews

Well that was interesting never had a video be reuploaded while watching
The paper ruffle sounds (especially when your character got the shivers at 11:18) is a very creative touch and sounds nice
He said his famous catchphrase, "That's Gaming!"
BRO YOU REUPLOADED THIS. it's fine except I was at 21:44 when I got a playback error. And genuinely thought you were doing a gag about like not getting back to the point or something and just say here staring for 3 minutes...

@@NateMiner8 aw man, you missed the easter egg, if you only you stayed one more minute !

Literally got a CGI medication and break during the CGI medication section.
An honorable mention has to be Cowboy bebop for its early use of CGI backdrops in 1998 and how it perfected it with the movie in 2005
I forgot about that honey combs monster. Truly the stuff of nightmares....
Really good cereal though.
@4:54-.-I looked it up: the Bee Movie came out just a year later.
wait seriously????? there's no way
oh my god what the hell it came out in 2007. either that cgi commercial was seriously really bad or bee movie is somehow a technological marvel
Yup, and also Super Mario Galaxy, which is even more insane to me because that was live rendered CGI and it still looks better than whatever that thing was

Also I loved the Sudafed ad as a kid ( 11:30 ) it was such a goofy but kinda accurate representation of sinus pressure.

and I somehow have NOT had any nightmares about it, so THERE
Just started the video but the animation during the part you're hitting the tv with the happy endcap looks so good!

I actually like the computer animation in SpongeBob. It ironically enhances the humor.
i love the paper rustling sound when you shudder
Deja Vu i've been in this place before

Yeah. It used the visual dissonance between the 2D and 3D to emphasise what was the virtual world or not, turning a weakness of hybrid animation into a stylistic flourish.
