    Dragon age: Origins, Dragon age II, Dragon age: Inquisition, and now Dragon age: Veilguard.
    So, DA:O, DA:II, DA:I, and DA:V.

    since you mentioned the similarities between Baldur's Gate and the Dragon Age games, here's a fun fact: Dragon Age: Origins was created as a successor to Baldur's Gate 2 and made by members of the original team because they couldn't get the license. This is why the gameplay is almost exactly the same as Neverwinter Nights 2, which at the time was the final game in the Baldur's Gate Universe (i.e. The Forgotten Realms). Funny how now we have an actual Baldur's Gate successor.
    Also bonus fun fact: the first BG game had a character line about "Chiquita Fast Paws" which is the character's patron god. In the first Mass Effect game, when Tali summons her drone, she calls it "Chikkita Vas Paus," a reference to the game since they were made up of the same team.

    • @fredvdp5029
      @fredvdp5029 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The story I heard is not that BioWare couldn't retain the Baldur's Gate license, but that they deliberately passed on it (and Star Wars) because they wanted to work on their own IPs.
      Edit: I looked it up and it appears this story is false. See replies below.

    • @ookami-chan3328

      @@ookami-chan3328 I don't have the book, so I'm reading the sample on Amazon. Is it the introduction titled "Birth of the Dragon Age"? I don't see anything there explicitly about Baldur's Gate, though I think he's alluding to it with his reference of "someone else's baggage".
      However, by looking into it further I did disprove my own comment by finding a Greg Zeschuk comment in an interview with Video Gamer, in which he said Dragon Age was made at least partially because of their inability to make Baldur's Gate 3. As for Knights of the Old Republic II, according to Gaming Bible they gave that up because they didn't trust they could meet the deadline.
      So yeah, the whole "they wanted their own IP" thing is probably just internet rumor that I put too much stock in.

    The problem with remastering the previous Dragon Age games and putting them in a collection like the Legendary Edition is that DAO and DA2 both use different engines and they are quite old.
    Also, next week they are releasing an 8-episode narrative podcast/ audio drama Vows & Vengeance up until release which features characters/companions from the game, it's supplementary and not necessary to listen to it but it is set before Veilguard I think.

    On the plus side it looks really good, very polished and dynamic, and .. Morrigan showed up, what else do you need! :D
    On the other side, I'm still having trouble adjusting to the very cartoon-y style, to me it makes everything feel a bit weightless and not real.
    The combat is definitely more Mass Effect than previous DA, especially ME Andromeda where the combat was very fluid & dynamic and actually felt really good. Not necessarily a bad thing but that's quite a change.
    Globally it still looks good as an Action(-rpg) game but I wish they'd showcase more of the exploration and dialogues system because in everything I've seen so far, idk but all the places feel rather small, no big open areas to explore, and on rail, like there's always only one path to follow. Dragon age was always about a story and its choices than the game play itself.
    I found origins hard and had to lower the difficulty on my first playthrough.
    Second game disappointed me mainly on the repetitive setting and recycling of locations.
    Third was definitely more fun in a way of being a leader, with a keep, and world is your playground style. But quests were later on just grinding.
    So saying that I agree that changing the gamestyle is maybe not welcomed, but definately open minded to it. Give me game where choices matters, have some feeling of development and Welonz can have some romance options so I can laugh about when she plays :)❤

    Personally I come to Dragon Age for the story and characters. The changes to the gameplay style haven't been something I mind about before and I doubt I'll start now. Only thing I'd like to hear is that they got rid of the open world and went back to levels/zones.
    Also, yeah, saying there's no spoilers and then saying that an Elven god and her archdemon are attacking seems kinda weird. Although I do wonder what they mean by that. Is it like what Cory did and it's just a corrupted dragon that's like an archdemon or are these literally the old Tevinter Gods? And when they say the Elven gods are blighted is that like, Blight with a capital B? If so it begs the question of who's really in control between the elf and the dragon.
    If nothing else I'm very intrigued.

    Regarding the question at the end of the video of how viewers of your channel find the gameplay thus far revealed:
    Speaking for myself... I'm not liking what I see. I really would prefer something... well, something else, I do think.
    It's tempting to say that I want the strategic gameplay of _Origins_ , and I _did_ enjoy that... but honestly I think that I could well enjoy an action-RPG. Even the limitation on how one controls party members I could be on board with.
    I just don't like the _specific_ mechanics presented here: the limitation on number of abilities, the use of things like "ultimates", the highlighting of potential combos, the limitation of only two party members, etc.
    ... Which is one reason that I've pretty much decided to pass on playing the game and just settle in to watch it here on this channel, where I can enjoy the story without being bothered by the mechanics! ^_^
    (Another reason simply being the system requirements--but I had toyed with holding off on watching a let's play until such time as I had a more powerful computer and had played the game. Now I just intend to watch it more or less as released on this channel.)
    That said, I'm an inveterate caster, so I'll wait and see what footage of mage gameplay looks like--maybe it'll win me over!

Only 2 party members, no direct control of party members and I assume if Rook is knocked unconscious it's a gamer over, load from last save situation even if companions are totally healthy. Agree, they should've led with this trailer, not with companion's reveal.
    Combat looks serviceable, without essaying too much, not great, not bad. I looked at different reveals and pretty sure how it'll play out, with pros and cons.
    I feel like them equating gameplay to combat is a bit of an archaic approach for RPGs, but whatever.
    4:21 Yeah, and comparisons mostly shallow. One is more exploration low/mid-stakes game that is gameplay first, which is typical Larian game, being gameplay first, the other is story and companions driven, which is classic Bioware game. They have some similarities, tho, for sure. But to say "oh these games both have companions" - yeah, every party based western fantasy RPG has companions and is medieval-ish.
    17:13 Actually, before LE, funnily enough, DA sales better than ME. Inquisition is the fastest and best-selling individual game. DA:O outsold ME1 as well. They just always treated ME as more of a primary franchise. ME was easy to remaster because of the same engine (just different versions of engine, and also engine that was supported). DA:O and DA:2 both have unique Bioware engines, specifically created for each of those games, impossible to remaster resource-wise and just knowledge wise (some clunky engine from 2009, probably no one left in Bioware who worked with it). It is full on remake with DA, or nothing, and remake is making a new game basically.

    I'm really curious how mages will feel to play. It's rare for a 3rd person action game to have a pure caster PC, I just bought Dragon's Dogma 2 and had had fun with the Sorcerer so it makes me really curious how DA will handle it.
    For me, DA has rarely been about the joy of combat, unlike ME (Other than the clunky ME1). I found DAO combat to be tollerable, just not for me. DA:2 could be simple fun as mage, and was genuinely enjoyable as the HP melting dagger rogue but was let down by the reused maps. DAI was fun as mage knight enchanter for me, though the side content and exploring felt too MMO influenced (until the excellent DLCs) and became tiring, and I dont remember feeling too challenged outside of high dragons.
    So honestly, I'm optimistic after the more recent stuff.

      I'd say sure on the combat but there are mechanics in DAO that should come back specifically dialogue choices and the ability to make moral choices. Them saying blood magic is to evil for the main character is worrying and the outdated dialogue wheel is a mistake. I actually think this game will be my favorite of the year I just think the direction of the series could be better.

    • @gownerjones
      @gownerjones 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoopHawke You're right, I was mainly thinking about the combat itself. Dragon Age 2 was so unbearably bad and draining on the soul between story beats and inquisition had you roaming the first area for like 30h. That sort of stuff looks a lot better this time around. They did emphasize in interviews that they were focused on making the game fun in terms of pacing and combat. Dialogue choices outside of wheel format would be nice. But I do get the blood magic thing. In Dragon Age 2 especially, I found playing a mage to be the most dissonant experience you can have. Here you are, fighting alongside Templars as a mage with a huge staff just for them to not realize you're a mage. You become a celebrity in Kirkwall while being an apostate and neither Meredith nor any of the other Templars seem to care or even notice at all. In DA1, as a warden, you're basically allowed to do whatever you want, so blood magic works fine. And now we're in tevinter, so being a mage is fine. But I don't remember how well accepted blood magic is there. If they made that decision to remove ludonarrative dissonance, I'd be fine with it honestly.

      That's what they always were in Dragon Age. In Dragon Age: Origins, they were literally humans with pointy ears. Only in DA: II were they given a more unique look. Which, honestly, I didn't like.

      @gownerjones 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoopHawke That does make more sense to me as a symbol than seeing it as foreshadowing. Also Varric is old now, it makes sense that he's not fighting anymore. Maybe he does get hurt in the fight with Solas and realizes "damn I'm too old for this"

    • @CoopHawke
      @CoopHawke 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @gownerjones Solas' ritual backfired and trapped him if Varric was with him I'm not sure why he wouldn't also be trapped. There also has to be someone to bring the Inquisitor into the story and reconnect Solas to them Varric did the same with Hawke and the Inquisitor. I also think it could be possible that Varric can never come back and he ends up getting a send-off in the fade with Hawke.

    when I see this gameplay and think of it as just an action game, it looks like could be an enjoyable one, although it comes down to how much variety and moves you have. As a dragon age game though I just can't see it as one, and the dialogue, characters, and the way they've presented it all to us thus far, has entirely turned me off from thinking I'll like anyone in my party. I hope it just comes out and turns out good and enjoyable, but I can't help that I feel nearly nothing about it's release atm.

  • @Shmurph

    On the topic of a remaster of the Dragon Age series, I don't think it's super likely, at least not in the way they did the Legendary Edition for Mass Effect. While the ME series certainly had its changes across the trilogy, a lot of it was still basically the same in terms of art style and gameplay, so updating them to be more visually and functionally cohesive wasn't as much of a challenge as it would be for Dragon Age, which looks and feels like a whole different game with each entry.
    I do think a Dragon Age remaster is possible, but it's more likely we'd just get an Origins remaster rather than the whole series. Which I'd definitely welcome, of course.

    I find the story already looking boring and unimaginative. If some outer-worldly overlords and ladies came to invade with power immeasurable and they would want to make everyone cower and kneel... then going on a murder spree would entirely act against that. If they know they are all powerful, they have nothing to prove for themselves. If they are so powerful, they don't need anyone to kneel to them. It's quite frankly another disappointing low in games writing. With the most shocking the predictability of all the twists in story. Things we seen a thousand times before. It looks like a low-effort nostalgia-bait cash-grab.

      A little hyperbolic. But if BG3 is the lake, then agreed. If DA is the lake, all I can do is ask if you actually played DA ...
      BG3 companions have more content - it's a very long game and the companions are very responsive to everything that happens. And their questlines are well-woven throughout the whole story. They are fairly well-written (to varying degrees of consistency and quality), and they mean a lot to many people, including myself.
      But sorry, DA characters have always been more complex, intelligently-written, and just plain interesting. Even with shorter playtime and seemingly less personal quest content. I've been thinking about some of these characters for like a decade and a half now. As fond as I am of my BG3 children, I can't see that happening with them 🤷‍♀

    I think Witcher 3 would be better to compare to this then BG3, as they both have more of an action combat. When I invisioned an action based Dragon age, I imagined something closer to the Witcher in terms of art style and combat. VG doesn't look bad, just mid. But Witcher 3 is like 10 years old and blows this out of the water in terms of combat and art style.
