I experienced it in Costa Serena as the passengers from Port Klang are on an emergency drill. I wasn't able to fall asleep because the ship arrived late due to congestion at the port and then passengers from Port Klang on-board ended their journey and left the ship. Idk why it needs to be at midnight. Plus the announcements. Yup, Costa Serena is now in Southeast Asia.
When you go on a cruise and hear it for the first time and you are not taking any notice on what they are saying but when you hear it for the first time it was quite unnerving, then you start paying attention .
Well, the system is designed to solicit an immediate response for the passengers and crew to report to muster stations. So, its fairly standard across cruise lines to use this system as a default. Therefore, it is easy to sync the internal alarm system to the ship's whistle.
It is longer because 7 horns can usually mean a salute or leaving the port in some cases. So the two long ones distinguish it from "Hello!" to "Help Us!!!!"
This is the emergency alarm. It is a series of 5-7 short blasts followed by the 2 long blasts. I f this were to go off in the middle of the ocean any ships near the ship would have to go by law not by decision to ensure the safety of all onboard. Just a lil fact for today
The horn is for all passengers on board and any vessels in the area. The whistle is for the crew, both sounding at the same time. The horn may not be heard in some spaces (such as stores or engine room as they're insulated), hence for the whistle simultaneously
The alarm consists of seven shorts blasts, followed by one long blast from the ship's whistle While the horn blasts are going off, there is an internal alarm system.
@@leDespicable yes you’re correct but a general alarm can be so many scenarios and abandon ship is apart of the scenarios. I was wrong to jump to conclusions. I know the captain legally has to say it but if the captain isn’t there and the P.A system isn’t working he can tell the first officer tell people it’s time to abandon ship.

That's cool that the alarms and horn are hooked up with each other
It's the general emergency tone used to signal for help, so naturally it became the emergency signal as well to make things simple for guests.

I just got of oasis of the seas a few hours ago lol
Allan Nicholls did u go to Jamaica?

I don’t know why but the fact that the last blow of the horn is longer than all the others just makes it more eery.

Been on this ship and many of her sister ships and it still freaks me out especially the drill mid cruise when I'm hung over and get woken up to it
Imagine having a horn this deep and you drive around your hood and honk just for the hell of it

Something similar - a BIG train horn, in a LITTLE car ;)

Captain: shit my car is being stolen
This is your captain speaking please don't be alarmed as we test our general alarm during the drill
Why does it sound so scary with the boat horn too?
since it is an emergency situation. you should trigger the people on board ship to take immediate action.
Engin Barbaros Çobanoğlu It also warns the Pilots, Coast guards and nearby ships that there is an emergency onboard.
It triggers the horn by its self
The horn is triggered with every beat the alarm goes
The horn alerts other ships
Reminds me of SpongeBob's alarm clock! I wonder why...
Shelby Thibodeau because his alarm clock IS a ship horn.. Isn't it?
SpongeBob's alarm clock is a foghorn.
I was on the spectrum of the seas and it was SO loud
Probably that emergency evacuation drill they do every time they go places
Imagine riding on another cruise ship then that alarm sounds in the fog
Get the violin players
They do? They blast the horn in fog it’s litterally called a fog horn😂
Spongebob's getting up, I see.
Oasis of the seas needs to be called the SS alarm

The sound coming from the horn means Get the f**k off the ship now. (Now) is the last blast which is the longest out of the seven of them
Nope. General Alarm doesn't mean "get off the ship". It means "go to your muster stations". The order to abandon ship is given by the captain.
Not true. Muster and abandon ship have different signals by convention.
