I was once walking in the mountains with a friend. at one point we came across a narrow rock ledge. He had great fear when he stood on the precipice. I instructed him to apply the practice learned here. Indeed! It works. The fear disappeared almost as quickly as a friend in the abyss..

There might be some adrenaline rush when 'falling' into hills which lingers for a bit, thus making one less scared. Also the brain may be a bit confused, still thinking about that fall onto hills and trying to react; so the brain might have no time to react for hand to face yet.

This is a mentalists trick. The first time it’s scary because you haven’t done it before. Planting your heels makes you feel like you’ve done something about it. Now you know what’s coming and you feel prepared for it so it isn’t scary anymore. So yeah, this works, but if you do the demonstration the other way around it wouldn’t.

It swings up and as it peaks, I look up to the sky, deep breath following the sudden weightless “lift” and then look back down breathing out as the Viking swings down. Someone commented it is a mentalist trick. You don't see mentalist doing this before. It's ancient secret of the great masters. They don't even understand why it works but that it just works. I am the only one who understands why it works not even doctors or scientists or masters. Not a trick at all. It is human natural survival instinct built into everyone. Some commenters said if you did it in reverse it won't work. It will work if they tried it they would know it works besides just just making assumptions on a keyboard. I can tell you a punch is coming a thousand times and a thousand times you will flinch. I can do a real test to prove I am right and those naysayers wrong. I can disprove argument wrong. I can bring someone in and was not told what to expect and they will still not flinch if I activate their survival beast mode instinct. So there goes their silly argument out the door. This is so you fight to the the death with no fear in order to increase your odds of survival.
Fear messes with you and gets you kill. So nature is smart and develop this to help you survive a deadly encounter. It can't let fear get in the way so your fear is temporary put on hold so you can be the best fighter without nothing getting in the way of quick actions and delayed thinking and hesitation. That is why you don't flinch once this is activated. If you flinch or hesitate you die.
I will break down how it works. It goes back to our primate ancestors. Before a fight apes will breathe in to fill their lungs because they hold their breathe when they fight so they need to take in as much oxygen before a fight starts cause they only resume breathing after a fight ends. That extra oxygen triggers a change in your blood oxygen levels so it starts you into the primary fighting mode. But that alone will not trigger beast mode fight survival mode as that is only just only half the process and you need the secondary action. The other half is lifting your heels and drop them. The reason why this needs to be done is by lifting up your body the quick change in body elevation tells your nervous system a fight is on. It goes all the way back from when monkeys jumped down from the trees to land on the ground hard with their feet right before a fight starts. Glad I can educate the world even biologists don't know about.

Me & my good friend went rock climbing. We usually climbed a certain height that we are comfortable with, take a break at the usual spot and then climb back down. This particular day we managed to secure the height quicker than usual and started to contemplate whether we should climb a little higher. We tried this technique to rid us of any nerves and fear. Amazingly.. it worked; almost like there was this renewed confidence & spring in our step. We climbed… I’ve never seen my friend since.

Sport Scientist here: i'll explain it as simply as possible.
it's actually activating your larger muscles or "posture"- your glutes and abs getting involved in the movement. and your larger muscles activated to bring your weight forward.
You aren't trying to switch something on very quickly therefore no- flinch
do the same thing for STRENGTH as it is a STRONGER position. This is why Karate developed stances.
Like when they pull their elbow behind their rib cage, the Lat is fully flexed and you have strong posture -

This reminds me of something a Tibetan monk told me during my sabbatical…
A man is driving down the road and breaks down near a monastery. He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, “My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?”
The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall asleep, he hears a strange sound.
The next morning, he asks the monks what the sound was, but they say, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man is disappointed but thanks them anyway and goes about his merry way.
Some years later, the same man breaks down in front of the same monastery.
The monks accept him, feed him, even fix his car. That night, he hears the same strange noise that he had heard years earlier.
The next morning, he asks what it is, but the monks reply, “We can’t tell you. You’re not a monk.”
The man says, “All right, all right. I’m *dying* to know. If the only way I can find out what that sound was is to become a monk, how do I become a monk?”
The monks reply, “You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are and the exact number of sand pebbles. When you find these numbers, you will become a monk.”
The man sets about his task. Forty-five years later, he returns and knocks on the door of the monastery. He says, “I have traveled the earth and have found what you have asked for. There are 145,236,284,232 blades of grass and 231,281,219,999,129,382 sand pebbles on the earth.”
The monks reply, “Congratulations. You are now a monk. We shall now show you the way to the sound.”
The monks lead the man to a wooden door, where the head monk says, “The sound is right behind that door.”
The man reaches for the knob, but the door is locked. He says, “Real funny. May I have the key?”
The monks give him the key, and he opens the door.
Behind the wooden door is another door made of stone.
The man demands the key to the stone door.
The monks give him the key, and he opens it, only to find a door made of ruby.
He demands another key from the monks, who provide it.
Behind that door is another door, this one made of sapphire.
So it went until the man had gone through doors of emerald, silver, topaz, and amethyst.
Finally, the monks say, “This is the last key to the last door.”
The man is relieved to no end.
He unlocks the door, turns the knob, and behind that door he is amazed to find the source of that strange sound.
But I can’t tell you what it is because you’re not a monk.

No don't confuse some charlatans as it's all of them. If you trained int he art you would already know this and not just watching online videos. Real martial artists don't fight for money that is why you won't find them in prize fighting sports. To show the world you are the best is not humbling yourself. Many Asians hate confrontation and is against their nature They surely don't want to have daily confrontations. They seek peace and the Buddha. Only Thailand is the only country that really fight for a living due to poverty and due to culture and history and being that Thais are the most mixed of the Asian ethnicities due to their open history to foreigners and mixing with outsiders so their and against the norm and one of he exceptions. .This is also true of the Philippines as they too have lots of poverty and also mixed with many foreigners . That is why those two counties have many boxers and kickboxers. They do martial arts not to beat someone but to be self assured if the need arises they will be alive and well and not out proving who is the baddest man on Earth.

This is literally the concept of meditation. You focus on your breathing and body. So your mind and awareness is only concerned about that. No fears, stresses or anxiety in that moment. There’s a reason warriors have practiced it both European and Asian all throughout history. Probably even American native warriors too.
