i live in chicago. this song will always have a special place in my heart. i remember it was christmas eve , i just started a job at a grocery store in chicago in 2014 working overnights (10pm to 7 am) they failed to tell me that we had christmas eve off. i remember being the only one in the parking garage for my job, 15 minutes early, not a single car or soul around, i texted my boss and asked whats the deal he said its paid time off, enjoy. just as i read that text 3:26 in the song sprang up and i looked up from my phone and knew it was complete silence, a blizzard was happening. i stayed in that parking garage for an hour watching the snow fall and enjoying this song in one ear but hearing complete silence and wind whipping past in the other. anytime this song plays thats the thought i have,
This song is currently helping me move on from a very damaging relationship. It gave me the strength to forgive and move forward. Because "no force alive will bring it back" to the way things were, and truth be told I wouldn't want that anyway. "I don't begin to proclaim that I know" what my future holds, I just know that "I cant continue down this road". It's time to move on. Thank you, Tesseract, for creating this masterpiece.
I just can't get over how "random" this drummer is. Obviously it's not random, it isn't even the most ridiculous or most technical stuff but it's so unpredictable when he accents sometimes.
TheApostleofRock and yet, he always knows where he first put the accents. it fascinates me really. and now after about 239865 plays of this album in its entirety, I can finally play along with it - with the exception of a few spots because i STILL CANT FOLLOW
TheApostleofRock In my opinion that randomness is what gives him his own style. As a drummer standing out can make or break a drummer. In his case it definitely makes it.
This drummer is so unique. A lot of drummers are rather too noisy or too robotic to the rhythm, not straying off it much. This drummer can strip down his drums, not be too noisy yet do subtle and complex beats. It's so clean and technical. And, as this comment shows, very interesting with grooves and fills. It's addictive.
I'm also an audio engineer. I know what you are saying but, Ashe wrote the vocals. Who knows though, maybe the engineer suggested the harmonies. Either way, it's been written and it sounds fantastic.
InceptorEyes I've done some audio engineering and from what I can tell, all that's been added is a slight echo and some gain and EQ to fit in with the guitar sound, though I might be wrong.
InceptorEyes Just heard them live the other day, with Dan as the vocalist though. He delivers Ashe's perfectly written vocals even better than the author himself. Absolutely incredible. The soundscape even works with him as a solo vocalist :)
As a musician I have a huge appreciation for amazing harmonies, and these guys have it all, technicality in the Djent genre, beautiful harmonies, dynamic buildup, and my favorite part is no screaming (maybe thats a personal thing)
Cristofer Muñoz Chacano Dont say that we won't know until the next album. I honestly won't say either way yet. But I agree if daniel screams I prob won't listen to it.
Mediocre singer. No one can perform what they record for some reason. The albums are great. But they aren't replicated live. And he uses prerecorded layers for harmonies, mainly the higher ones
Burning bridges as I cower beneath trying to salvage the debris my devotion tied around your waist lest you fall no one seems to sense the strain no one seems to know... I wouldn't say REAL music, since everything is subjective, but i must admit, i am falling in love with this band. Their rhythms and melodic vocals are so ethereal and leading, and it takes me to a whole other place.
The whole song is like a gentle progressive lullaby. The few times I played it, me and the bassist were always waltzing left and right. The rhythm compels you to. And the melodic members in the band are almost like rocking you to sleep.
My favorite part is definitely 3:18 on, such a small buildup and pause, but once the instruments drop after 3:26, it's such a powerful little shift in the song.
One of my fave Tesseract songs of all time. Perfect example of what Tesseract is if you wanted to demo to someone not in the know. Love the way it builds up Love those chiming guitar tones and haunting vocals.
This is beautiful. When one is listening to it you get so many mixed feelings. Yet it seems perfect. Favorite song? I think yes. And it is a nice fresh change to see civilized viewers.

I love all Tesseract's music, but Ashe's contributions are unrivaled for shifting ones perspective when the inevitable day of disillusionment dawns for people who dont yet know how it can become - until all seems lost. To me, Dan's powerful vocals are about triumph and vast perception, while Ashe's are what can get you though the dark when it may all seem like the bast times are never to return. Which is an illusion that looks like The End, but is just the end of an era! That is the time to try again to give Altered State a decent listen if it wasn't relatable back when it seemed nothing could ever go wrong. If I'm just reading to much into it....thank fk for that! Definitely powerfully healing music. LOve it forever
It's called a metric modulation. He went from accenting every quarter note to accenting every third eighth note on the bell of the ride. It results in what feels like a tempo change (slower in this case).
In iTunes I cut the song in half at the odd break (sounds like should be two songs at that point). So now I have Of Matter- Retrospect and Of Matter- React.

because the majority of the population likes popular bands. plus the fact very few people know the difference between being commercially succesfull and being succesfull as an artist
I think it's got something to do with the shift in music trends, and mostly to do with the fact that pop, and general chart music is 'easy listening'. I think that less complex music is easier to consume, catchier and most importantly its easier to get a wider audience with 'easy listening'.
Its all about appreciation, we appreciate music as an art form, for somebody else, it may not be. To lost of people music is just something to play in your car for background music or to do house chores or party to, its sad because it is a dying art, but its good to see people like us sitting down and really enjoying it for what it is and keeping it alive.
Sounds like a 3/4 rather than a 5/4. The best part of Jay's performance IMHO is at 2:30, which showcases his octopus-like limb independence. But yeah, I agree with you on that one. The beat change at 2:06 is AMAZING.
This song and Exiled sound like the rhythm is in triplets but in full 4/4 at the same time the entire way through and it's the only thing i can focus on when either of those two come on.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is music that can heal a broken soul...
Right now its breaking my soul
I suppose it gives some RETROSPECTIVE impact to life...
nice one haha

TesseracT- the masters of the subtle build up.
ProjectONI616 GYBE are the true masters for me. This track is great regardless
Ever the Outcast I'd give that title to Tool. Check out Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2. Tesseract is awesome at it though.
lol why would you compare post rock to metal?
This song is currently helping me move on from a very damaging relationship. It gave me the strength to forgive and move forward. +TheApostleofRock its called fill and groove right? haha
As a drummer, I can totally attest to this. Especially the snare, it's so fucking hard to figure out some of his grooves lol

2:30 .. the soundscape he creates with his vocal harmonies is incredible
I agree with you. But inside a studio, everything is possible.
blindox Yep Yep, take it from an engineer. That stuff is the work of the man behind the board. It is fantastic though.
I'm also an audio engineer. I know what you are saying but, Ashe wrote the vocals. Who knows though, maybe the engineer suggested the harmonies. Either way, it's been written and it sounds fantastic.

Djent is not a genre.
oh whats the name of this genre then? like prog metal?
Could be Progressive Metal, of course, could be alternative. I find it silly to base a genre around a guitar noise.
IDeathMetal58 I'm not a musician, but your opinion describes perfectly what I think. This will be missed a lot :(
Cristofer Muñoz Chacano Dont say that we won't know until the next album. I honestly won't say either way yet. But I agree if daniel screams I prob won't listen to it.
1:06 DAT RIFF!
They are so amazing live! Many feels, such tone, much prog.
indeed saw them in cologne! nailed it!!!
Yeah man, got to open up for them on the start of the Altered State tour, such an amazing time.
Danny Whitt i just noticed i read "such amazing time"
Haha, I had to re-read what I wrote after you said that.
Mediocre singer. No one can perform what they record for some reason. The albums are great. But they aren't replicated live. And he uses prerecorded layers for harmonies, mainly the higher ones

Thank you ❤

the part at 4:00 makes me scream of joy
Going crazy every time I think that an incredible riff like the 1:06 one is used ONCE in this song.they are genius
So much feels. I get goosebumps every time.
The whole song is like a gentle progressive lullaby. The few times I played it, me and the bassist were always waltzing left and right. The rhythm compels you to. And the melodic members in the band are almost like rocking you to sleep.
Oh Man! The 4:43 is so damn killing.....!
Totally Eargasmic...!!
Love returning to old tracks even new . all Tesseracts hits the soul just right
My favorite part is definitely 3:18 on, such a small buildup and pause, but once the instruments drop after 3:26, it's such a powerful little shift in the song.

3:46 Freaking amazing, I love this band...

This is beautiful. When one is listening to it you get so many mixed feelings. Yet it seems perfect. Favorite song? I think yes.

Epic tune. Nicely done, Tesseract.

Amazing
Phenomenal everytime.

This album was awesome.
I love when people are well educated in music. Makes conversations so much easier in times such as these. =)

Gotta love these comments. Sophisticated and respectful, just like the music.
Why aren't bands like this in the top 40????
because the majority of the population likes popular bands. plus the fact very few people know the difference between being commercially succesfull and being succesfull as an artist
Actually it's because music is subjective.

KadeMetalHansen you mean you don't do your chores to Tesseract?
This is Great. Something new with a touch slipped out thru that vortex of sounds.
Sounds excellent thru my new headphones.
2022 anyone? This song is a masterpiece.
Deserves more views!
this is so good live...
i love this goddamn song
kickass track!!!
Sounds like a 3/4 rather than a 5/4. The best part of Jay's performance IMHO is at 2:30, which showcases his octopus-like limb independence. But yeah, I agree with you on that one. The beat change at 2:06 is AMAZING.
Daniel and Ashe really have that vocals that could fit in well with TesseracT
This song and Exiled sound like the rhythm is in triplets but in full 4/4 at the same time the entire way through and it's the only thing i can focus on when either of those two come on.
You know a song is good when people comment different parts of the song being the best.
I think that this song could be my favorite one of entire album, and one of my favorites of whole life. Great album.
love the octave transition on the bass 3:07
Best song 2013
I wish you well, man.
Apparently this is an "angry" song. :P
+ganondorfchampin and apparently "inadequate" aswell
+ganondorfchampin 1:05 riff sounds very sinister
+RBLangR i know
It's not THAT sinister, it's also rather funky.
+ganondorfchampin i know
4:03 is my favorite. I love the melody.
@Jack Savitskoff he is taking the the half note triplet of 4/4. No meter change, just a change in accents. Hope that helps :)

That syncopation at 2:05 is golden
"This is a complex masterpiece." - That's why it'll never be on the radio. Unfortunate truth. Not enough appeal for the uneducated.
This is 10/10 this whole album gave me hope for humanity srs
Lightening force
So much harmony, I don't know which one is the actual melody.
so atmospheric
nice
i was wrong..i love the new singer..the album is great..
goosebumps
Gives me chills. Second favorite to Resist
I'm pretty pissed this only has 11K views.
So Deep!
How do u call this type of music?
... Divine
Absurdo esse som.
someone explain to me what the drummer is doing at 2:06. the change of emotion is so fucking awesome , is it a 5\4 switch?
5:00 Waifu..waifu...you ll see meeee!!!!
Soft, ambient, distant, mellow. How different...
nice...
