- UPDATE: A lot of people have contacted me about the incorrect measurement/missing step. This is evident in the text I added on-screen stating the mistake and correcting it. However, if you missed it --after you take 40" (or your equivalent) you need to HALF that for the pattern width-- as it gets doubled after cutting the front and the back. Just a heads up since a bunch of people said theirs came out wrong. It's there in the video!
Going to be quite candid.... not crazy about how that video came out. But I finished it! And am uploading it!!! Anyways be sure to tag, share, like, subscribe, and what not!

Honestly the best tutorial I've watched, thanks heaps! Very straightforward and understandable, and the finished product looks great. You are very talented, thank you.
You're very welcome! Your comment was so lovely! Thank you so much
I adore Bernadette but your video is just wonderful for clarification with measurements etc. Brava. I will watch more of your tutorials now. Glad I found you.
I'm so glad it's helpful! Our video came out about the same time o I am glad it's not so redundant! I absolutely will be making more in the near future!
Wow you are talented, and you are VERY good at making videos. The instructions are clear, the camera and sound are well done. Very impressive.
This is so relaxing to watch and your work is beautiful!
Beautiful video! I love how methodical it is and how I could easily adapt it to fit my own measurements. I've been needing to make a historical men's shirt so this will be very helpful! Thank you!
Linen is nice to work with! Enjoyable video. Ty
It really is! I can't wait to make another one!
Wow that's an amazing video. I would need at least a half a bottle of adderal to do that. Im one of those guys that has to churn it out in a sewing machine as quickly as I can.
Was really interesting, informative and fun to watch. Thanks!
Que increíble, vi muchos tutoriales que solo
muestran superficialmente el proceso, y no se entiende nada vi su vídeo y aclare mis dudas un fuerte abrazo desde México felicidades por compartir detalles importantes para la confección de cada una de sus obras How incredible, I saw many tutorials that only
They superficially show the process, and nothing is understood. I watched your video and clarified my doubts. A big hug from Mexico. Congratulations for sharing the details.
thank you for this ! been searching forever 👏🏾
This is a great tutorial! I will definitely be following it! :)
The fact you showed how to take the measurements and make the pattern is really helpful!
Yay! I'm glad that helped!
Great video, very detailed in how to determine the measurements. I'm halfway through a shirt based on other videos, I'm beginning to think it'll fit a kangaroo better than it'll fit me as the arms look too short, but the length of the body will keep my knees warm. I'll watch your video again for mark 2.
I’ve watched this video a FEW times now. Love it. Working on my own!
That's wonderful! Thank you! If you post it on Instagram be sure to tag me!
This is making me want to run and pull out my sewing machine right this moment. Looks so simple that maybe I can do it.
Also, I recognize that sweater! It’s in my queue to knit and yours looks lovely.
Thank you! If you do be sure to tag me if you do! I love my Mazzy Cardigan so much! It's v cozy~
12:55 the cackling startled me, HAHA
XD sorry! that was my sister!
oh my god me too, I had a heart attack and had to replay it serval times to make sure I wasn't hearing things!
Thank you thank you thank you for breaking down how to get the measurements for the body pieces! I also appreciate how you tell us where and why we put gatherings and marks on the fabric! I just have a question about the main body width: why do you cut a 40” width when put together it makes a whole 80” balloon around you? I don’t quite understand exactly how that works?
Hi! Thank you! That's an error on my part (I think I made a correction note on the video) but the body total (that 40") needs to be halved then it's the right width for cutting!
@@MagpieAtelier oh I must have missed that but it makes so much more sense. Thank you!!!
Your video is so inspirational and practical! I've just bought some linen and want to make a shirt following your guide. I'm wondering if those calculations included seams or not? Thanks!
Hi! Nope my calculations did not include seams! You can add them either after you mark your pattern on paper or fabric or just include them in the calculations. If you add seams to the final measurements be sure to account for both sides of the garment!
@@MagpieAtelier Thank you so much!
@@ciawang8347 No problem!!
I found your tutorial while trying to find out how exactly to get either the collar or a shoulder gusset to fit into the corner of the neck slit. I can't wrap my head around how I'm supposed to make a 360 dgr turn in the seam. I had no trouble installing the sleeve gusset but there you have some extra room thanks to the seam on the underside of the sleeve.
Hi! yes, so this is a crazy confusing part! But if a visual helps I have a diagram on my KoFi under the body section
ko-fi.com/post/18th-Century-Mens-Shirt-Pattern-and-Tutorial-N4N823R03
So after you make the horizontal (to your body) cut for the neck you fold the square in half then insert it corner first into the shoulder slit. It's a Very fussy process! I did it one side at a time with a seam-allowance-long side overlapping the end of the slit. Then I did the second side up so both raw edges of the gusset sit in the corner of the shoulder slit-like >> that.
Take it one side at a time and make sure there is an overlap for the second edge. Pull the shirt fabric out of the way if you need to you're the one in charge XD! It's ok if the corner isn't perfect! Steam and practice helps so much!
It's a funny way of doing it but it makes sense economically. Then the collar gets plopped on top after some light gathering!
@@MagpieAtelier Thank you so so much for additional info! That and the diagram definitely helps. I'll try it out on some scrap fabric first to make sure I got it right.
@@venlakirahvi Absolutely! If its still not making sense let me know and I can make a YT Short or post on my insta sometime in the next few weeks!
Your video was very helpful, particularly with the measurements in the pattern. I do have a question about the head opening, though. If the width of the body is 20 inches and it is 8 inches from each shoulder seam, doesn't that only leave 4 inches for the length of the neck opening or 8 inches total? Would that not make it much smaller than the collar and much too small for a neck?
Hi! it would be 4 inches but this was snug on me and had little gathering/fullness. I am rather small though! Making the overall width larger, say, 30'' rather than 20'', will help with that but depending on your chest measurement you might have to anyways. For me putting in the gussets (each adding 2.5'' of width) helped too especially with rounding out the neck to fit better!
Hope that helps!
@@MagpieAtelier Yes, thank you! I'm going to cut the head opening for my shirt a bit bigger.
Great video! I'm so confused by how you inserted the underarm gussets. I had to watch multiple times! I always insert them as squares... Do you have a reference where they do it like this as a triangle?
I used the shirt in Costume Close Up as my reference and they used the triangle gusset method! I was confused with this as well but the extant garment had them so I decided to experiment... The shirt is in the Colonial Williamsburg collection acc. no. G1974-268
Awww the music ❤️❤️❤️a
I think this video came out great. I would like to know where you got your dressmaking pins if you can, please.
Thank you! I believe these are the ones I am using! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CG5V663/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The armscye is my forever enemy but I love the video! Thanks 😊😊😊
Mine too! You really have to bully them into working sometime XD
What if your stomach is bigger than your chest? Would I do my stomach width/the widest part of me?
Always use the larger measurement!
Hi, I've got a small question :) I already made one and it turned out great, but now I'm going to make one a couple sizes bigger for someone else. Do I need to adjust the size of the gussets if the shirt is going to be much bigger?
Hi! i based this off of a shirt that was much bigger then my measurements so i’d say keep the size the same but save some bigger scraps just in case. more then likely it shouldn’t be an issue! i’m curious how it works out!
@@MagpieAtelierok, thank you!
Also just wondering, for the gusset, do you add 2 on each arm or just one triangle?
Ty for the lovely video
One for each arm! The other smaller gussets are for the neckline!
Hi, nice tutorial! How many yards of fabric did you use? Do you think cotton will work for this shirt as well?
Cotton could work! You would probably skip the thread pulling section and just draw your pieces on the fabric.
As for yardage, I think I have used 2.5-3 yards but I am quite small. If you take the combined length of the two longest pattern pieces (body and sleeve) and add .5y that should be roughly how much you will need!
@@MagpieAtelier Ok, thank you very much!!
I am a bit confused at the bust measurement, isnt that going to be way to wide?
Or is all of that going into the folds (thats a good 40 in of pleads)
Maybe im just really confused and stupid
Make sure you read my errata in the video's description about the bust measurement but yes it is fairly voluminous in the chest!
Any idea what the gsm is for the linen? We have limited resources in nz as to where we can find linen like this. In fact I doubt we can find any at all. Very jelly of your resources there
The other linen I used was 3.5oz/yd! here is a link with more specific info fabrics-store.com/fabrics/linen-fabric-IL020-bleached-light
If you put the Pattern on "The Fold Line" of the fabric... you will have only TWO Body pieces instead of Four! This is exactly what they did back then and have done for many centuries.
I always try to make my shirts a bit larger then needed because shirts back then could be and often were VERY FULL and Voluminous!
Same goes with the sleeves. Make sure they are full enough AND long enough?!
This is a great idea however it can make it difficult when working with linen. To get a nice drape it needs to be on grain as much as possible! So pulling threads is foolproof for keeping on grain. I didn't have four body pieces I only have one main body piece as there isn't a shoulder seam.
I'm sure this is plenty full enough for my and my daily wear. There is a difference between full and Too Full. Any more and I would look ridiculous. But this is only my daily clothing and occasionally a costume.
cheers
Ok I have a couple questions lol. If I'm correct about your measurements, the neck hole would be 24 inches? Is that correct? It just seems so big. Also, do your measurements include seam allowance?
The neck hole is big but like the original, it gets gathered down into the neckband. No, the measurements do not include seam allowance!

It's look kinda hard 👁️💧👄💧👁️
