I love everything about this. That it's a video series, that you can fulfill two prompts with one book and if you do there's a reward of continuing a series, that instead of book of the month you're taking your mom book shopping every month (a gift and an experience). Great way to kick off 2025 content
As a girlie in academia, I stand a footnote. The addition of footnotes in fiction is one of the best developments. Loved it in Babel and Chain Gang Allstars.
I agree! I especially love them in Terry Pratchett's books, the footnotes in the Discworld series add so much to the story, and often make me laugh out loud.
Oh yeah, Discworld is a great example, and also Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, where the footnotes do so much to deepen the lore of the world and sometimes even give complete extra stories!
The third Magnolia parks book actually has the new york skyline on it!! It's on the bottom of the boat!!! Plus it has the horizon/sky behind it as well.
i finished The Will of the Many MINUTES before putting this video on 😮 and i’m obsessed with The Farseer Trilogy lol! love that we all work in the same circles 😂
I read assassin's apprentice years ago and love it. This year i read tainted cup and love it. Need the second book already. Should i read the will of the many?
I agree about the Will of the Many cover. The cover with columns stands out so much more, while the sepia color could be any sff book in the past 20 years... For next month, the older cover of The City in the Lake by Rachel Neumeier has a skyline, and I've been meaning to read it...
you reading and loving the magnolia parks series is everything to me you don’t understand!!!!!!!! and the best books in the series are still yet to come
How fun! Rewarding yourself with continuing a series sounds amazing! And how lovely to go book shopping with your mom every month!!! Loving everything about this! Lol not your mom getting revenge and being all "well if I need to read these by next month to update the people so do you!"
why did I actually jump when you said Robin Hobb like I know her personally😭 your mom should definitely read her!!! my fav fantasy series/author/characters/everything
I've not done reading challenges, tbrs etc before because I'm a mood reader, but my reading year last year was so 'meh' that i decided to give this a go in 2025. I'm also using it to help me get through my tbr. So far so good, thank you for putting these challenges together!
Books that work for both water and skyline prompts: somewhere beyond the sea, the mermaid the witch and the sea, eat the sky drink the ocean, Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world!
Absolutely love everything about this video/series!! So fun to see you and your mom go book shopping and I love that you’re trying to knock out the challenge with one book (even if it doesn’t work every time). These are great ideas for the challenge, I was already planning on reading One Of Us Is Lying for this month! Also, I loved the audiobook for Listen For The Lie, so funny! I wasn’t shocked by the big twist and wasn’t 100% obsessed but it was an entertaining time. Glad you were able to make the pattern one work for you, well done 😂
I love these challenges and have paired it with Skyes diamond painting challenge based on your challenge. Challenge made in heaven for me!! Been with you for 10 years❤
As a girlie a few years into her Robin Hobb journey and picking up the pace a bit more this year, I hope your mama loves Asssassin’s Apprentice! And I hope that YOU love The Will of the Many! James Islington forever ❤️❤️❤️
Oh no! I am starting Society of Lies tonight. 😂 Hopefully it works out and I am stoked to find out I can use it for my Pattern challenge as well. I ready Listen for the Lie last year. I think you will enjoy it.
For next month read: All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall. It fulfills both prompts. Its a quiet dystopia. It gave me similar vibes to: Leave the World Behind, The Blue Book of Nebo, and Serverance!
Just watched your most anticipated reads video, and the book “water moon” has a skyline on the cover! If it’s out in Feb that book would fulfill both challenges.
The way you feel when you read the magnolia parks books is the same way i, and i think many others, feel when we read fanfics. And i mean those long fanfic with too much plot, not just a one to 5 chapter, 25k words fanfics. No. Those 500k words fanfics you read with too much drama, too much plot, too many pages but that one couple you were dying to get together the whole series even though you know that would never happen for a multitude of reasons. I can see it in the way you react when you read, in the way even the most cheesy, stupid lines just prompt a reaction out of you, not because they are good but because it is these characters who say it in these situations. And i think it is so wonderful that there is a book series out there that brings these emotions to ppl
Yay!! I'm excited to see you do the readathon! Here are some suggestions for books that fulfill both of next month's prompts (that you may or may not like): Seven Tears at High Tide by C.B. Lee, Somewhere Beyond The Sea by T.J. Klune, Second Chances in New Port Stephen by T.J. Alexander, and a version of the cover of The Bog Wife by Kay Chronister has a horizon line!
Love that you’re doing this! I read “First Lie Wins” for truth & lies, and “Nothing To See Here” for pattern (the wallpaper pattern on the cover-its subtle, but I’m counting it!) Liked “First Lie Wins” and LOVED “Nothing to See Here”.
This was so fun! Looking forward to next month. Also, when you first showed the Daisy cover I immediately thought, this has LD’s R&J vibes. Not me *gasping* when you said it aloud at the end lol. I guess I know what I’m watching tonight!
I am LIVING for your reactions to Daisy Haites. I freaking ADORED daisy, Christian is my favourite. I actually like magnolia more in daisy's books!! I didn't like the third book, but I adored the fourth. I have the fifth book but I'm not starting it until the sixth book is at least announced because... I adore daisy. I'm so glad you liked it!!
Ahh I'm so excited that you're vlogging your challenge this year!! Next month I'm planning on reading "Sea Of Tranquility" to fulfil both prompts, but you've already read that one (I think). I've been having so much fun with the challenge these past couple of years and I'm excited for another year ❤
Love that you found a way to continue reading series you love! Also a suggestion for a book with water words and a skyline is Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao and it comes out this Tuesday the 14th.
I joined Storygraph in November and I'm so excited to have found your two challenges. So far I've completed the truth and lies and am working on the pattern... I'm trying to not put pressure on myself to read all the books I selected for the challenges and see it more as suggestions that end with a very cute and satisfying graphic (if I manage to complete them all). Anyways, all that to say, thanks for the challenges and the great reading inspo!
also remind yourself you don’t actually have to do it in order! i use the readathon as a challenge for the year and just read whatever from it whenever.
Love that this is going to be a series. Next month I'm going to be reading Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao which has water in the title and a city skyline on it (which I didn't realise the skyline was there until about 5 minutes ago!).
I am also reading Daisy Haites for the pattern prompt so I was so excited to see you pick it up for the video as well! I've been chomping at the bit to see your thoughts on book 2!
I love the daughter/mother bonding moment. I think she'll love Robin Hobb's books. For this month I will be reading Lies we tell ourselves, and Swimming in the dark. I though this last one had a skyline, but It just sea and no sky... they are very short, so I take the pattern and skyline cover to the next month
Please keep your mom in these videos! I relate with my mother and grandmother about books. I actually just recommended my grandma to listen to the audiobook listen for the lie. It was so special to see the reading connection between mother and daughter. Especially when I am living across the world from my family and don’t get these experiences!
I love that you're doing the challenge as well. I also read Listen for the Lie for the challenge and gave it 3.5 stars. Circe for the patterned cover. It's a long stretch but I think The Shimmer on the Water by Marina McCarron might fit both prompts for February - water word + skyline
I had a YA thriller on my TBR, and one of the covers for it has a pattern, so I'm counting it. It's called Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher, just in case anyone was looking for a 2in1 book for January and happens to like YA thriller :)
Super excited for you to read The Will of the Many it was my favourite book last year. Although usually our tastes don't align at all 😅 hopefully this is an exception and you love it 🤣💕
Jessa Hastings has talked about how she doesn't really read much fiction & I think it's one of the reasons the Magnolia Parks books are so hard to fit into a box. They really are so singular! They are sort of plotless character studies in the way we usually only get in litfic, but they are super frothy and a bit silly in a way that we generally see in more formulaic genres such as romance. And I am always surprised by who does and doesn't like them!
Mom saying "well it's pattern-esque" is all of us this month. 😆
So true 😂
"You buy a book and it sits on your TBR shelf for 3 years" I felt so seen
I felt called out 😂
I love BooksandMama ❤
lol yes!
I love everything about this. That it's a video series, that you can fulfill two prompts with one book and if you do there's a reward of continuing a series, that instead of book of the month you're taking your mom book shopping every month (a gift and an experience). Great way to kick off 2025 content
I love the mother daughter shopping!!!!
loving that you put your own plot twist into the video to justify reading daisy haites no matter what 😂
I love seeing you with your mom!! More mom content she’s amazing!!
I did not expect a Kayla vlog to convince me to read the whole magnolia parks series but here we are 😂
just an appreciation comment for your content, an absolute comfort booktuber 💝
Agreed! Seeing a LALA post brightens my day!
As a girlie in academia, I stand a footnote. The addition of footnotes in fiction is one of the best developments. Loved it in Babel and Chain Gang Allstars.

Oh yeah, Discworld is a great example, and also Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, where the footnotes do so much to deepen the lore of the world and sometimes even give complete extra stories!
“there is crack in these pages” yes yes yes it’s hard for me to understand my passion for magnolia park series but it’s addicting
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love the two-book format! I think it makes for a perfect vlog length!
Ooooh I love this reward system for you
OMG YES ROBIN HOBB. Would love to hear her thoughts on it (and yours...)!
The third Magnolia parks book actually has the new york skyline on it!! It's on the bottom of the boat!!! Plus it has the horizon/sky behind it as well.
Oh man Tainted Cup, Assassin’s Apprentice and the Will of the Many were all in my top 10 of 2024!! All very good books!
I literally JUST finished the Tainted Cup a few days ago and have borrowed the audiobook of both Assassin's Apprentice and the Will of the Many LMAO
i finished The Will of the Many MINUTES before putting this video on 😮 and i’m obsessed with The Farseer Trilogy lol! love that we all work in the same circles 😂
I read assassin's apprentice years ago and love it. This year i read tainted cup and love it. Need the second book already. Should i read the will of the many?
@@Yuukitsu it's nothing like Tainted Cup or Assassins Apprentice, but it is still amazing!! It's more of a school setting with a Roman inspired world!
@@kyestrella the fantasy hive mind is alive and well today 😂
I agree about the Will of the Many cover. The cover with columns stands out so much more, while the sepia color could be any sff book in the past 20 years...
For next month, the older cover of The City in the Lake by Rachel Neumeier has a skyline, and I've been meaning to read it...
you reading and loving the magnolia parks series is everything to me you don’t understand!!!!!!!! and the best books in the series are still yet to come
this is already one of the best things you've ever done, love everything about this
Agreed. And my favorite character of all time is in Fitz and the Fool
So fun to see you and your mom book shopping together! 🥰
You’re so adorable and engaging - and your mom was a wonderful addition!
I love your Mom!!! Bring her back~❤
Oh I'm so happy this came out early because I was taking patttern WAY too exactly.
It’s so funny when you said the vibe of Daisy Hates was DiCaprio’s R&J because that is the exact vibes I got from the cover.
I've not done reading challenges, tbrs etc before because I'm a mood reader, but my reading year last year was so 'meh' that i decided to give this a go in 2025. I'm also using it to help me get through my tbr. So far so good, thank you for putting these challenges together!
Love the cozy snowy vibes!!!
Books that work for both water and skyline prompts: somewhere beyond the sea, the mermaid the witch and the sea, eat the sky drink the ocean, Aristotle and Dante dive into the waters of the world!
I, too, love a footnote. Your mom is adorable. Can’t wait to see more of her.
Cannot wait to watch this series unfold!
haven't watched a single SECOND of this video yet but HELL YEAH! I'm sat.
Love a new project!! Looking forward to this for the rest of the year! And omg the tainted cup! One of my favorites of 2024!
All the water in the world definitely counts for both prompts!!
I am absolutely loving this series! For February, Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao would be a perfect fit!
Absolutely love everything about this video/series!! So excited for you to do this!!
Magnolia Parks sounds like such a fun series!
So excited to try to complete the Buzzwordathon this year!
You and your Mama have the same warm laugh 🥰
I love these challenges and have paired it with Skyes diamond painting challenge based on your challenge. Challenge made in heaven for me!! Been with you for 10 years❤
Love love love this series!! Can’t wait to follow this all year 😍
Um obsessed with you and your Mom. Also a brilliant way to get through book series!!
I love that you included your mom. ❤
This was such a fun vlog! Loved seeing your mom and you shop it was so sweet. Also I love a footnote!
Love having Mama Lala!!!
Oh my gosh, your mom! 😍😍 I love her!!
the idea, the execution, the cast - spectacular. I think this will be my new fave series !
I love your mom!! Your relationship is so special ❤️
The vlog was everything. I hope your mom likes Hobb and the passion for Daisy!!! Yep yep yep!!!
I'm so excited for this new series!!! Sounds like it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch 💚
As a girlie a few years into her Robin Hobb journey and picking up the pace a bit more this year, I hope your mama loves Asssassin’s Apprentice!
And I hope that YOU love The Will of the Many! James Islington forever ❤️❤️❤️
Seeing you interact with your mom warmed my heart. 🥰 I love this video series and can't wait for the next one.
So happy to see you reading things you are having fun with! Here's to an awesome reading year for us all 🎉
Mother daughter shopping date! Love it.
Love this plan!
Oh no! I am starting Society of Lies tonight. 😂 Hopefully it works out and I am stoked to find out I can use it for my Pattern challenge as well. I ready Listen for the Lie last year. I think you will enjoy it.
I ❤ your mom is in this! I can’t wait to see more of her!
For next month read: All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall. It fulfills both prompts. Its a quiet dystopia. It gave me similar vibes to: Leave the World Behind, The Blue Book of Nebo, and Serverance!
I LOVE this as an incentive for you! I think I've seen people putting Water Moon for next month!
Robin Hobb!! The girlies do indeed want more people to get into Robin Hobb, I love the Realm of the Elderling
Just watched your most anticipated reads video, and the book “water moon” has a skyline on the cover! If it’s out in Feb that book would fulfill both challenges.
Your mom is so fun on camera!
Seeing Harrow the Ninth and Nona the Ninth in the intro made me so excited for this year!
I love that your mom is apart of this video and I hope she is in all of them! Excited for this new vlog series 🤗

Seconds into the video and I am obsessed with your top! The color is great and looks so good with your hair! ❤
This was so fun! Looking forward to next month. Also, when you first showed the Daisy cover I immediately thought, this has LD’s R&J vibes. Not me *gasping* when you said it aloud at the end lol. I guess I know what I’m watching tonight!

As someone who has always been interested in your participation in your challenge, i'm having the time of my life 😁
I cannot describe how excited I am for this. I already planned to complete these challenges so I'm excited you're participating too!
Love that this is going to be a series.
Next month I'm going to be reading Water Moon by Samantha Sotto Yambao which has water in the title and a city skyline on it (which I didn't realise the skyline was there until about 5 minutes ago!).
Water Moon is on my anticipated new releases list 😄

SO excited for this series!! loved seeing you and your mom's shopping trip to the bookstore!!
Excited for the new series! I'm trying to do both challenges with one book 🩷
IM SO EXCITED, you inspired me to start reading again, so happy for these vlogs.
I love vlogs like this that satisfy challenges and gives me the secondary satisfaction of you finishing something 🤌🏻
I had a YA thriller on my TBR, and one of the covers for it has a pattern, so I'm counting it. It's called Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher, just in case anyone was looking for a 2in1 book for January and happens to like YA thriller :)
water moon is water words and a skyline on the cover for feb!
So exciting!!! 🥳
Omg the perfect book for those next prompts just came out, All the Water in the World!
Heard it compared to Station Eleven
Super excited for you to read The Will of the Many it was my favourite book last year. Although usually our tastes don't align at all 😅 hopefully this is an exception and you love it 🤣💕

I listened to Listen for the Lie for the truth and lies prompt too. I LOVED it!
It's nice to see your momma again! ☺
Loved the video and so excited for this series!
I LOVE this. Hype for the series
I loveeeed this video and I'm so happy you could do the prompts and read a sequel even if I don't see what you see in the Magnolia parks series 😂
I love this idea! Productivity and goals.
