  • New Zealand has many unique things which you won’t come across in other countries; however, as a foreigner, you might be surprised that it misses (for good or bad) some very common things you might have used to see back home. Here are some of the things and phenomena that don’t exist in New Zealand, unlike many other places.

Anna, very good but a couple of corrections required. There are popular ski fields on Mt Ruapehu, volcano and sometimes active, central Nortth Island, so therefore snow, Turakina, Turoa, Wakapapa. Snakes, there are no land snakes. Occasionally a sea snake arrives on shore but cannot establish itself here so usually dies.

And if you use those 20 days paid leave with the Xmas, boxing day, new year day, easter friday and monday you can almost streach it out to 6 weeks holiday. 😁

The same applies in Australia too... and I think there are more public holidays here too... and they are also paid holidays.... and if you have to go to work you will get 2.5 times your daily wage normally... depends on whom you work for or do etc... I'm a bloke from Te Kuiti, born in Waipuk(shortened!) and have lived in Australia for 46 years on and off... My kids are all Aussies and so is my wife, whom I am not longer living with...

Couple of comments/feedback.. The North Island does get snow, in the centre around the volcanic plateau, "Desert Road" closes a few times every year due to snow.. And the mountains near Christchurch snow consistently (in periodic dumps) with there being several ski-fields an hour away from Christchurch. Mt Hutt is open longest in NZ from early June to sometimes mid October.. And Christchurch itself gets snow down to sea-level, like even on the beach, every few years.. Obviously NZ snow doesn't compare in any way to northern hemisphere snow tho..
And secondly the cafe thing. In the cities cafes stay open til 4, good ones til 5. In Christchurch before the 2011 Earthquake when Christchurch was a late night city (some clubs stayed open til 8am) & two 24hr supermarkets. When we had what could be called a nightlife, good cafes stayed open til 8pm, & there was even a couple open 24hrs in weekends.. Those days are long gone & the city was taken over by old people. But I guarantee that Wellington & Auckland would have some cafes open til atleast 8..
Also people do still use cash, just not as much. Alot of people just use Paywave using their phone. But people do still use cash also. I use cash often, but I also use crypto too. Alot of music gigs will have door sales, & all farmer's markets still use cash, as also do all tattoo studios. Most Facebook marketplace sellers selling 2nd hand will prefer cash also..

Old people-oh noe! Just that they're poor is the problem, but yes. Is it the 'modern' takeover of precinct design, screwing things over? Apart from the economic situation?
Snow, used to hand around and before the Industrial Revolution beginning the warming of the planet, snow handing around has greatly reduced.

It's a bit pedantic, but I've lived in Wellington for 50 years and seen snow on the ground at sea level twice. On the hills a few more times, and on the mountain ranges a short distance north - pretty much every winter.

About 12 years ago it snowed just about everywhere, not normal by any means but it can happen. I've even seen a little video of "snow" on the windscreen in Northland, although it looked a lot more like a tiny bit of sleet to me 😀 Last winter in Northland the lowest outdoor temperature we saw on a Max/Min thermometer was 5 degrees, much better.

:@@avid6186: born and bred in Auckland, 68yrs old this year, yet to see snow, maybe 12yrs ago, when it snowed in Pukekohe, in West Auckland, I saw flakes of snow falling, but once it hit the ground, nothing. Even when I drove through desert road, there wasn't any snow to be seen, but woke up in Taupo next morning and Desert Rd closed due to snow.

Hi, central North Island gets snow and there is Mt Ruapehu that has two main ski areas, Turoa and Whakapapa. There is a smaller one run by another organisation there.
Snow might not be as good as the South Island, but their is usually enough to do snow sports in the winter time.
Also Mt Taranaki is also snow covered.
There are a few other ski areas in the South Island for people to explore.

Hi, you are correct in most of your points. However, there is always more; in addition to annual leave of four or five weeks there is sick leave, parental leave and 12 days public holiday leave, all on full pay. You also need to add to your work calculations that the ACC covers your insurance liability from the time you leave for work, your work place and to your journey home. Your health and medication are subsidised and you are also covered for calamities like earthquake and fire, but that can get a bit selective. Basically, if you are an outdoor person, love the open spaces, fishing and hunting and can turn your hand to most things in house and car maintenance and using number 8 wire, you will fit in. Should you need the coffee and arts culture, stick to the big city. The other point that you missed is that because the Kiwi cant fly, the people of this island take flying as the norm. Virtually every town has an airfield so that you can get to most places by air from the major hubs. Fancy a glacier tour or a bit of back country wilderness hunting and fishing for yourself and your mates? Take a helicopter trip in and out. Can do is our attitude. When you look at our young farmers you will find that they are mostly university graduates who have all done a stint overseas and come back home on the farm. Not many countries that I know where ex servicemen have returned, worked hard and got into farming and owned their own properties! Its paradise for a lot of us who have served all over the world and survived to come home to raise a family. You should know coming from the Balkans! желим вам срећу и добро здравље, želim vam sreću i dobro zdravlje. Cheers mate. Harera

Employers have to give minimum Two weeks holiday to workers, this is usually over the Xmas break.
My work shuts down for up to four weeks over Xmas, so we need to save 9-11 days annual leave.
Cafe and Restaurants can have a surchage on public holidays as staff are paid and extra half day.
You can tip if you want too, some place have different rules.

Ash is still king. Yesterday I couldn’t pay for my haircut as the hairdresser’s internet was down (not uncommon in NZ). Luckily I’m of the generation who still carry cash so was able to pay! After the Christchurch earthquake we could only use cash for a few days as many places had no electricity or internet.

Heh wait until winter. Christchurch will get snow on port hills in winter. You're also in a dip from the Southern Alps and Banks Peninsula. If you really want snow you're reasonably close to the alps as well.
I've left Dunedin on a cold day and arriving in Christchurch its worse in the right conditions.
If you're used to Europe winter you're probably fine but you may have gotten used to mild Summer and Autumn temperatures.
Not really getting the hard winters as often though now. Been over a decade or two.
