The Twilight Zone incident hits even harder when you see the clip of crew going to try and rescue the trio. One man bends under the downed chopper to see if they're still conscious, then visibly reels back in what looks like terror, before wading back away from the crash. Truly heartbreaking

All I can find nowadays is basically the same footage shown in this vid, but seeing the scene I described previously just stuck with me too well not to share it, in my own way.

The one with Donald Herbert hit me the hardest. Seeing that man's face when he realized he was gone for 10 years was heartbreaking. And just when it seemed like there might be a happy ending, he falls unconscious again and dies. Rest in peace, Donald Herbert. At least he's not suffering anymore.
Same for me. I had to pause the video for a little bit because I started crying. Though, on a positive note, it's a miracle he was able to wake up and beautiful that he was able to at least spend some time with his loved ones again when his situation beforehand looked somewhat hopeless. For the Twilight Zone segment. The combination of a night scene, child actors, live explosions, and a helicopter overhead. In my eyes, that's just asking for something bad to happen.
I kept hoping it wouldn't end in death. God, it's awful no one was held liable. That was a death trap waiting to happen. Two children and a man's life, ended over a freaking movie
don't forget - fatigue. Everyone was uber tired and probably slow to comprehend the level of danger. If I remember correctly, the safety director there had also left. That probably wouldn't of passed back then.
Oh my gosh, I am so RELIEVED that Tetsushi lived. I thought for certain he was going to drown. I can't believe none of them realized something was wrong. Even if he hadn't been paralyzed, he seemed to be at the very least unconcious. I was gritting my teeth watching them bob his head up and down in the mud. Painful to watch. Happy he's doing okay.
there's a lot of culture around all countries haven their own conscious feeling that nothing is going to happened everything is find, and people never take these tragic things serious, I'm not saying Japanese people are stupid, or any other country for that matter, I love Japan.
I'm glad for Tetsushi, he's made quite a stunning recovery, and him having the mental strength to come back to the show, shows what kind of a spirit the guy has. It sucks that this happened but I was happy to learn it at least had a good ending.
There was a Japanese man who was psychologically tortured for like a year for a show and I just knew from that case that Tetsushi would act the same way he did, by smiling and saying it wasn't the show's fault.
That one was so tragic. It hurt so much knowing how he made it, after all those years... he made it... only to die soon after because a family member who was so comfortable with thinking he'd be fine... left.
I couldnt imagine the pain he felt in the afterlife knowing that after 9 years of fighting, he got a second chance and then just to die because his own family member was impatient
Why aren’t we talking about Donald’s story more? When I heard “10 years” my guts tightened up so hard. I’m 25 and imagining losing 10 years of my life and waking up at 35 is unfathomable. All of his life plans and goals over those 10 years, just gone in the blink of an eye; think about all of the families members who passed away while he was gone and he didn’t get to say goodbye to. It’s beyond heartbreaking. And then you have to think about the family member who left him alone that single night. The amount of guilt they must’ve felt is unimaginable. That whole story is so tragic and gut wrenching.
I had a friend be in a coma for a few months after getting hit by a car they had to cut his skull open and let his brain swell and he had to relearn how to walk again etc completely back to normal except he has no filter and kinda says exactly what he thinks he’s not mentally incapacitated to the point of Down syndrome but I’d say he’s mentally immature and has really bad impulse control so we kinda look after him together as friends and is very fragile compared to others but before the accident and being in England he was the best basketball player I’d seen personally and it’s wild that after the accident he was probably even better I appreciate him because he couldn’t be here obviously his story and It’s interesting asking him questions because I like learning about the brain
22:50 after he says "can you get a shot of this gun" and the camera pans over.. its like you can see what Dryden is thinking in his eyes. He looks around, takes in the situation, probably realizes hes already on camera with a bunch of witnesses, and then you can literally SEE his face change as he makes the decision to take aim and fire. That is an absolutely haunting few seconds.
Dude tried to engage with the system, warned people what would happen, and they didn't have the good sense to back off even when a gun is in their face. We didn't lose anyone important that day.

I find it so upsetting that Morrow and the children got no justice following their deaths. It was a dangerous idea from the start and the director should be held accountable.

The producer of the Twilight Zone not only had dangerous props, not only had child actors in a dangerous situation, which was illegal, not only indirectly caused the death of 3 individuals, but managed to escape legal punishment and got away with the cash from the film... This guy must have hired Saul Goodman.

Sort of a silver lining to the second story- Yanagida has regained mobility in his upper body and one arm. And, according to his xwhos article, he’s still active as of 2022. Definitely not an ideal situation by any means, but it really brings me joy seeing that he seems to have adapted to his situation. Crazy how he could have been dead in only a few seconds

The Tetsushi bit hit me like a truck. At first I thought he died instantly, but even though he didn't die the fact everyone was playing around and didn't realise the gravity of the situation made me so distressed. Like I don't blame the people around to think he was joking considering the setting they were in, but damn they took too long to realise he wasn't playing around.
I don’t know….I kind of blame the people for potentially causing more injuries to the victim. He was on the ground for a good 10 seconds, I think maybe even longer. If I were in that situation, even in a stupid game show like this one, I would notice something was wrong if someone wasn’t getting up after a couple of seconds. Also we are all looking at this situation from an outsiders perspective and we have the whole picture of what's happening, so we want to believe we would notice something wrong right away. But it's hard to tell how it would go if you or me were there like, while the whole thing was happening. In any situation, I would hope most people would immediately check to see if the person is ok. Like he immediately went limp and was face down, how do you think the person is ok? Especially how he fell and the movement of the neck.

In a macabre way, the Twilight Zone Incident was kind of like a real life Twilight Zone: A director's hubris for the perfect scene took 3 innocent lives, and the movie wasn't even liked when it came out. So now he's known as not only the director of "the bad Twilight Zone" but also as the cause of 3 deaths.
Right before they filmed that scene in The Twilight Zone movie, the director told the parent’s of the children it would be like “a Disney ride”, being fully aware that the man in charge of the special effects told him it wasn’t safe. The Twilight Zone incident is so horrific. Not just because of the 3 dead actors, but because none was found liable for the deaths and that John Landis just went on to have a successful career afterwards, living he's life to the fullest. While 2 kids never got to live and experience theirs.
If it was a genuinely unavoidable situation that’d be one thing…but he knowingly violated child labor laws, went against the wishes of the experienced helicopter pilot (who said it was too low and too dangerous) and having the pyrotechnics guys just doing Willy nilly explosions! With a low flying helo it should be 1000% planned! He knew he was doing something risky! That’s called manslaughter! Negligence and reckless endangerment as well.

On the case of Tetsushi Yanagida; keep in mind that whenever you suspect a spinal cord injury you're NOT supposed to in ANY WAY move them unless absolutely neseccary and then only do it in a controlled manner (stabilised head, body preferably put on a board and not simply carried in your arms). While they were joking with him, they were constantly moving his head and neck around- most likely causing the injury to become WORSE, not to mention that they pick him up in a "swan dive" position. Makes me wonder how bad the injury would have been and how differently it would have healed if they realised instantly that he might've gotten severly hurt?
@Hanna G….I hear you, but what other choice would they have had? There wouldn’t have been no time to properly stabilize him, before lifting him up because he was face down drowning.
Even if they'd realized what happened right away, if they'd have waited until they got a backboard out there and gotten him properly strapped on (which still would have included moving him a lot since he was fact down in the mud), he absolutely would have suffocated. A spinal injury, even with permanent paralysis, is preferable to smothering to death in the mud waiting for "proper protocol". What the hell. Them pulling him out was the only way he lived at all. And the reason he was hanging there was because unlike most people, he'd just lost all use of his body below the neck. Kind of a catch 22.

One person should kneel on both knees and while victim is being turned over, they position themselves so that his head rests on both legs ("ontop of between the thighs"). Because of how our thighs are shaped his neck and head would be resting in a stable position until emergency service would arrive.
The worst part about the man jumping in the mud was that he was CONVINCED he wasn’t even supposed to be doing this stunt if he had said no, his life would’ve been entirely different. It’s crazy. What a simple yes can do to someone’s whole life.

I have no idea why he did a full Olympics dive when he knew from watching the entire thing that the mud was only 5 inches of water. If you're losing your balance like that, you just brace with your arms under you, but not fully outstretched and rigid, you want to become a spring, not a cinder block.

I'm terrified of paralysis--Sleep paralysis is one of the most frightening things I've ever experienced. But being completely paralyzed, stuck face-down in mud and suffocating, unable to move or communicate to people, while they taunt you and pour more mud on you... that stuck with me. This is gonna stick with me for a long time.

Idk if this helps, but the choking/drowning-like feeling you have on a sleep paralysis is due to your body's rhythm while sleeping. So if you ever have one, don't worry, you're not actually running out of air, and if it's too intense, you probably got your sheet of something on your face 😅 I've been there lol

For a little more context regarding The Twilight Zone movie, I listened to a podcast that went over that whole tragedy. Apparently, the helicopter pilot was a Vietnam veteran, and had warned Landis that there were too many explosions, and that they were too close to the helicopter, which will cause it to malfunction and crash. Landis then proceeds to tell the crew to add MORE pyrotechnics for an even bigger explosion, without informing the pilot. He is an absolute scumbag, and I am amazed that he never seen a day in jail for that atrocity.
Once Albert had the cameras on him he took it as his bluff being called. You can see it in his eyes what he's thinking. "My move? Well here you go then"
That firefighter story hit me hard. That was my dads job, and even though he worked 35 years as a firefighter and survived it, I am still emotionally crippled from having grown up with that daily fear of something bad happening. The fear that the worst might happen was there during every minute of my upbringing. This poor fella went through everything I feared for my own dad. Such a tragic and horrific story. Bless that hero

FUN FACT: The gun Albert Dryden used to kill Collinson was in his possession since he was 11 years old. He bought it from a schoolfriend, who had previously stolen it from their father, a WW1 veteran. Since cartridges for that gun are out of print, Albert created custom made ones from 410 bore shotgun shells, which he subsequently dubbed “manstoppers”.
One of the eeriest things about "The Twilight Zone" incident, is the footage of a crew member running to help the 3 victims. You can see the moment he reacts and quickly backs away when he realizes how horrific the injuries are.
The video of Dryden is wild. You can literally see him processing the decision to shoot the gun. He genuinely looked like someone who let things get out of hand due to all the attention, making eye contact with all the cameras and looking almost scared, before a moment of clear decision making. That's such a wild sequence.
He should have just gone through the proper process. The guy had a below average IQ and owned 10 handguns and 15 riffles illegally and had homemade explosives. He did plenty wrong even before he shot somebody. Dryden and Collins were friends/friendly before the whole thing. The guy was crazy and became even more crazy and paranoid in prison. Collins brother said: People who knew Dryden, and he was quite well-known, always knew he would do something like this.
Jon Landis is 100% responsible for those actors being killed. Despicable how he got away with it completely and what high-priced lawyers can do for you. The guy is technically not a murderer but if it wasn't for him those 3 would have probably lived good wholesome lives.

The thing you missed about John Landis/Twilight zone movie is that using children at night around pyrotechnics wasn't "technically" illegal, it was very fucking illegal and everyone knew that but John Landis at that time was one of the biggest names of hollywood and you didn't say no and keep your career not to mention those children were not legally employed, Landis consciously worked around child labor laws and employment laws to keep things under wraps so the producers didn't shit can him. The tragedy is that it couldve been a relativley safe scene if not for Landis ego and thoughtlessness, the pilot was a veteran helo pilot that warned landis that what he was asking was insane even for someone as experienced as him, production crew did try to undermine him but sadly failed and to this day John Landis has not been held responsible for the murder of two children.

The third story was so sad. To become lucid after 10 years, it must've been so hard to feel that reality first-hand. The thing that pisses me off about the Twilight Zone helicopter crash is that Landis specifically broke the law, deceived the parents about the danger (who were speaking to them through a translator), and when multiple people told Landis about their concerns he would brush them off because he just had to film it exactly how he wanted to and didn’t care about the obvious preventable danger it posed to everyone else. The dude went to these people’s funerals, put on a big “oh woah is me” act, despite family members explicitly telling him not to come, then dragging the court case out and getting away with it even though he was clearly guilty. How he could have any career after all that is just truly disgusting.

What made the Twilight episode more agonizing was that the parents of the 2 young non unionized children were not told exactly what was to happen….they also sadly witnessed their children’s death.
You know what freaks me out the most with the Albert Dryden footage? Before he aimed, his whole body language was screaming "cornered wolf". Today is the first time I've ever seen this footage, yet I could immediately tell when he was going to kill them. And the fact is, they could too. But they were so high on power that they treated this man holding a gun like he was a petulant child, which definitely erased any hesitation he had. That is insanity.
I was at school when this came out on the tv. I couldn't believe it! I'm actually on Albert's side on this one, though. He (the jobsworth) was warned that if it escalated, to back off and let the situation calm down. He made the decision to openly antagonise a man who was known to own firearms, and escalate the situation. He was answered with a .455 to the chest.

I was bout 12 when this happened, I remember the local news reporting on it and even at such a young age I sided with Dryden, I couldn't understand why he was being given such a hard time for building on his own land in such a remote area. I'm in my 40's now and my opinion hasn't changed.

Just a small correction to the Renard Spivey story. Although a lot of news outlets didn't report it because it made for a more clickbaity article, the wife he killed was not the one he was "happily married to for 27 years". The wife he killed, Patricia Spivey, he had only been married to since 2015 (which was towards the end of the run of the show). He had three wives, I believe the one he was married to for 27 years at the time was his second wife and he divorced her at some point after that episode which aired no later than 2008.
Dude caused the death of 3 people, wasnt found guilty, had a party for the jurors, continued with his career for a short time and still released the film that deleted Vic and 2 innocent kids. Wow. I dont know how that guy is able to sleep at night
Nick's right to find Tetsushi's story particularly haunting. Beyond the simple shock of what happened to him and the results, there's the very real possibility that he might have been less injured, or even come away without permanent damage, if the situation had been recognized earlier -- If there had been even a single person looking after proper safety monitoring. It's this kind of TV stunts-gone-wrong story that we see repeated often, so it feels heartbreakingly preventable.
@holyroman6541 They absolutely could have and probably did further injur the spinal cord. Paralysis doesn't come from the bones breaking, it comes from damage to the spinal cord. There's various levels in which this can occur, for example, incomplete spinal cord injury.
The Vic Morrow story is so much deeper and darker than you touched on here. He actually had a fear of working with helicopters, after having a "very serious premonition" that he would be killed in a helicopter crash years prior to this film. Also, the SFX lead guy actually told the director that he was using too much blasting agent for the scene, and that was before he found even more of what're called "channel charges" hidden in different areas prior to filming. Think of them as conical mortars... Another failure was in the helicopter pilots safety procedures (or failure to follow said procedures). Once again, the director demanded he fly as close as he did so that the helicopter could be framed against the backdrop of the burning village, as they'd waited all day to film this single scene and only had one shot since he'd planned on essentially decimating the entire on-site set to film this one scene. The children were also paid off the books to avoid scrutiny from labor laws for having the children in a hazardous environment and working as late as they were. (Not so) Fun Fact: Stephen Spielberg and John Landis were two very close friends prior to this, and Spielberg actually co-produced the movie, but he completely broke off their friendship and wanted nothing to do with Landis for decades afterwards. I don't believe they've ever reconciled. The reason I know so much about this is because Vic Morrow was one of my Dad's favorite actors, and my Dad was a huge movie buff, so he'd done research of his own in his youth, and once he'd told me about it, I was a tech kid, so I dove in too. For the Twilight Zone movie one, I heard somewhere that the helicopter pilot was actually a veteran who had been flying that model for years and had said before-hand that the whole stunt was a terrible, dangerous idea and, I think, almost didn't go through with participating. If I remember correctly, they basically brushed him off and said "Nah, it'll be fiiiine." So much of that one scene actually was illegal. Horrifically preventable.

John Landis should’ve been locked up after that incident. That was manslaughter no doubt about it. His idea, his casting, his direction of the scene. It absolutely infuriates me that not only did he get away but also was able to enrich himself in the process.

The Twilight Zone accident is so much worse than you alluded to. Vic Morrow, and the child actor he was holding was decapitated by the helicopters whirling blades, the other child was crushed under the skids of the aircraft. This footage was showed countless times at the trial, and in part on news broadcasts. The only reason it still exists is that someone ripped a copy from the work print, and sold it to a Faces of Death knock off, Death Scenes. That’s why it has the creepy music behind it, it was from the video’s footage, which was Death Scenes 2. Additionally, Morrow’s head can actually be seen floating near the crashed chopper.
No wonder the footage had that ear piercing music. I know that's the point, but hearing that music over the slowed down footage just fills me with a completely different kind of dread

Bit of a misconception with Twilight Zone: While Landis DID enjoy a successful career in the early to mid eighties afterwards, subsequent lengthy public legal battles made the incident more well known, and a tell all book that was published have pretty much left Landis' career destroyed, with only sporadic gigs from the 1990s onwards. In fact, when Landis directed an episode of Masters of Horror in the 2000s, a teamster was on set reading the book (making sure Landis could see him). He then very sarcastically asked Landis to sign it. When Landis explained that that was a difficult time in his life and trying to move past it, the teamster again very sarcastically asked him to sign it, to which Landis stormed off.

As someone who is dealing with some fairly serious health issues relating to my spine I found the footage of the tv journalist who fell in the mud DEEPLY, deeply disturbing. How tragic. I am at a loss for words.
The case with Donald Herbert upsets me because that was clearly a case of negligence by the place keeping him. If someone is putting their life at risk with violent thrashing, relying on someone observing them is begging for something terrible to happen. I don't know enough about the cause to suggest medication that could have been used, but simple restraints would have sufficed.
Thank you for not actually showing the footage of the Twilight Zone set crash, I know it's probably more to do with YT guidelines but it's a truly horrific stretch of seconds. I was watching a documentary series on Shudder a few months back and one episode was about this accident. The episode played the full footage of Morrow running with the children and the out of control helicopter crashing right into them, it was horrific.
I too am from the Buffalo NY area and was working at the nursing home that Donald Herbert resided at. It was an absolute shock for the employees when he started talking. There was also talk of it being potentially short lived since it is all reality, uncharted and outside of typical recovery. I am sure the value of that time he gained was absolutely invaluable to his family and friends.
It takes a special person to be a fire fighter and a nurse. My adopted dad was a fire chief for 40 years, my sister brother in law niece and newphews still do it. I tried but my ptsd made shit worse. That's terrible he passed that way.

I work in one and even if patients are at risk of falling, it's considered a restraint to do that and it's sometimes illegal to restrain patients. Although I will say, they could have placed a pillow underneath the mattress on either side and it may have helped, that's what we do if we have patients that are at risk of falling out of bed.
John Landis was explicitly warned not to have the helicopter at that low of an altitude with the pyrotechnics in place, and he just ignored all safety concerns. It is simply disgusting to me that he was never held accountable.

I think the most horrifying thing on earth is being unheard in a dire situation. Tesushi desperately needing help and Herbert being trapped in is own head, countless people who can't communicate in a near vegetative state and hearing people debate pulling the plug--hell, even drowning or like, being unable to tell someone you're in pain after a stroke or seizure or something and you just sit there, aware and stuck in your own head. Its something that has always truly scared me deep down. This idea of screaming for help, but no one helps, because they simply don't understand how desperately you need it. Its not that they're ignoring you or don't care, thats easy to process. They literally have no idea and you can't tell them, and later they will have to suffer because of it. Its truly the deepest, most disturbing concepts to me.

The only thing I can do is chomp my teeth together, that's all I can move. And sometimes it will wake my partner and he knows if he hears that noise, he needs to shake me awake immediately. Sometimes no one is around though, and I have to keep trying to move until I'm finally able to move my head to wake up. 😩

I couldnt move or speak but could hear my thoughts. I screamed Jesus in my head loud as I could. Im not the most religious person by the way. I just kept screaming Jesus God and the shadow got scared and I was released. Idk what sleep paralysis is exactly but I truly believe I saved my life that night. Sorry if this sounds wild. I havent had it since that night.

About The Tetsushi Yanagida. I heard of this incident maybe 10 months prior, and I thought he's died from that moment. Now it's still sad but knowing he's alive and trying his best to live his life and even reconnected to the show is one of the best things to know. I hope the participant who asked him to join doesn't blame herself too much for what's happened and I hope he forgave her for the accident.

@@n.b.l.5709 I almost did that at my grandpa's pond when it was getting dug out, when I was a kid. Decided last minute to go feet first just cause it would've made a bigger splash, water was only like 3 inches deep, it was a good 6-8 foot dive I would've broke my neck for sure

John Landis was even warned that it was dangerous, and he went ahead anyway and urged the helicopter even closer to the actors. The whole story of his actions both leading up to and after the accident are despicable really.

I can't find anything about the pilot freezing up however, just the testimony to the investigators about Landis overruling the camera crew who wante the pilot to get out of there
I recently watched some documentary about how some producers break thy rules to get the shot they want. One ended with someone being hit by a train. Where they weren't supposed to be filming.
I remember watching some documentary on what happened on the Twilight Movie set. Watching the helicopter fall and the blades spin made my heart drop into my stomach. Absolutely gutwrenching to see, especially knowing those kids should not have been there and all the corners that were cut that led to the tragedy. The fact there was little more than a slap on the wrist as punishment for the people responsible is such a miscarriage of justice.

Despite John Landis never being charged for his negligence there are still plenty of people who refused to work with him and there has actually been sort of a dark shadow over his career despite his success. I read the book on this and it went into all of the court documents and every single situation leading up to the tragedy. There is no doubt in the judge's mind that there were multiple laws being violated but at the end of the day these people they have this weird diplomatic oath to these directors in Hollywood and if you look into this case despite it starting in the late '80s it was not finished until the early 2000s.
Man I actually felt something on Tetsushi's story. That's rare when I'm watching a video. But just the way things went were so brutal. I couldn't not feel dread. But hey, he lived. That's very good. I think I honestly felt real relief when I heard he survived but damn. Just a few seconds later? He got so lucky in that regard. I mean the situation isn't lucky but him surviving it certainly is.
I know my gut just turned watching him being messed with while entirely limp. I know those tv showers were pretty extreme with jokes but I'm shocked no one really checked on him. When my friends would mess with me like that my ass was pulling them out of the pool bc that shit is serious.

I don't know why more people aren't talking about the age difference in the first chapter? He was 63 when he killed her, she was 52. This was a decade after the show where he said he had been married for over 27 years. During the episode, he was ~53 and she was ~42. He was 26 when they got married, and she was 15!
The story of Donald Herbert is so heartbreaking. When he woke up and was just asking for someone to tell him how long he'd been gone, and then him simply falling out of bed being the reason he finally passed away.
What gets me about the Twilight Zone incident is that Morrow actually had a feeling he was going to die before they filmed that part. If he had just listened to that part of him that felt that way and not agreed to the scene, I imagine that this could have been avoided. Always trust your gut feelings, people.
It should not have been up to the family to stay up ALL NIGHT with the firefighter. Hospitals and nursing homes have "babysitters" for that EXACT reason. I know because I was one. When I worked as a CNA/GNA at my hospital, one of the many things I did daily was to sit with patients who were deemed "wanderers" or who were fall risks or at risk of becoming violent.

Logically it was a blessing that he even woke up in the first place and there was no guarantee his health wouldn't deteriorate again, but how awful it must have been to loose him in such an abrupt way after just getting him back...
Oh that's the worst part. They would have woken up if they were sleep there. They left him alone because they didn't want to have someone stay there every night. I would assume the hospital was understaffed because seemingly they wouldn't designate a nurse to the room to watch him. When he clearly was not a "normal case".
The third story absolutely broke me. I cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a loved one for ten years, believing they were gone forever, eventually getting them back, feeling that level of happiness and joyful disbelief, and losing them again shortly after. And simply trying to imagine being the person who was lost, found, and lost again... is just horrific. It's one of the most cruel and horrible things life could possibly to do a person. My heart goes out to Donald's friends and family.

John Landis should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent, not just with the slap on the wrist he got. He also should have been shunned by a critical mass of people and institutions in the film industry to effectively prevent him from continuing to rake in millions and millions of dollars over the following decades, as he did. Stephen Spielberg unfriending him was not nearly enough. That should have only been the beginning.
As someone from Durham, it's so weird hearing about the Albert Dryden case. Not just because it isn't often talked about, but because no one talks about Durham much and hearing his accent is so strange because the Durham dialect is quite unique. A little background on Albert Dryden. He was always a gun fanatic and his first gun was a Webley revolver, which he bought off of his friend as a teenager. He often made his own firearms and even missiles and mortars in his own garden shed. At one point several years before the shooting incident, the RAF picked up several unidentified dots on their radar and sent the military to where the dots had been seen. They had feared that they were Soviet bombs or planes (this was during the Cold War) but when they reached the destination, they found not bombs or planes, but Albert Dryden, who was firing homemade mortars into the air, so powerful that they were picked up on the RAF radar. From here most of Dryden's story is covered here but one fact that wasnt mentioned was that Collinson was murdered with a Webley revolver, the same Webley that Dryden had bought decades before.
If they knew he had guns it sure was idiotic of them to send people there to forcibly demolish his own home on his own land that he had built with his own hands and not provide them any security in case he grabbed a gun and wouldn't back down. I don't agree with either side on this matter (he shouldn't have killed someone but I do understand how upset and pushed to the limit he was) but they probably should have secured him first and then done what they felt they had the right to do under the stupid law. He even warned them several times that he was going to use force if he had to. Completely avoidable situation.
If he had such a record the authority should have approached him in a much more sensible manner. But again you never expect someone to shoot in broad daylight among a crowd in front of camera. Sad it ended that way.
I was a defendant on Cristina's Court many years ago; everyone was hired through an agency and auditioned, then we were given our character and case outline about 15 minutes before we went in front of the camera. I met my "husband" right then, and largely whether you won the case or not came down to how well you could improv on the spot because you had one take to get it right. Can't say I remember that guard, but it's absolutely chilling to think I was in the same room as him.
The fact that he dove off and went limp like that and everyone just... Did that. My immediate fear would have been that he knocked himself out cold and to yank him from the water. He was completely unresponsive and they were shoving him deeper. It's so appalling and sad.
I think the chances of surviving a helicopter crash are far higher than surviving near it. Just like cars, helicopters are design for, in the case of it crashing, the crew have a higher chance of surviving. Considering also the height it was flying I think it was safe for the crew itself in the case of a crash. But man, it's so depressing to learn three people lost their lives in such a tragic way. The worst part is that you can't even blame the actors and the children parents. They have no extensive knowledge to deduct the danger of it all, meanwhile the production team had full knowledge that it was both illegal and insanely dangerous. ):

The Twilight Zone incident hits even harder when you see the clip of crew going to try and rescue the trio. One man bends under the downed chopper to see if they're still conscious, then visibly reels back in what looks like terror, before wading back away from the crash. Truly heartbreaking

There was a Japanese man who was psychologically tortured for like a year for a show and I just knew from that case that Tetsushi would act the same way he did, by smiling and saying it wasn't the show's fault.

Why aren’t we talking about Donald’s story more? When I heard “10 years” my guts tightened up so hard. I’m 25 and imagining losing 10 years of my life and waking up at 35 is unfathomable. All of his life plans and goals over those 10 years, just gone in the blink of an eye; think about all of the families members who passed away while he was gone and he didn’t get to say goodbye to. It’s beyond heartbreaking. And then you have to think about the family member who left him alone that single night. The amount of guilt they must’ve felt is unimaginable. That whole story is so tragic and gut wrenching.

I had a friend be in a coma for a few months after getting hit by a car they had to cut his skull open and let his brain swell and he had to relearn how to walk again etc completely back to normal except he has no filter and kinda says exactly what he thinks he’s not mentally incapacitated to the point of Down syndrome but I’d say he’s mentally immature and has really bad impulse control so we kinda look after him together as friends and is very fragile compared to others but before the accident and being in England he was the best basketball player I’d seen personally and it’s wild that after the accident he was probably even better I appreciate him because he couldn’t be here obviously his story and It’s interesting asking him questions because I like learning about the brain

Sort of a silver lining to the second story- Yanagida has regained mobility in his upper body and one arm. And, according to his xwhos article, he’s still active as of 2022. Definitely not an ideal situation by any means, but it really brings me joy seeing that he seems to have adapted to his situation. Crazy how he could have been dead in only a few seconds

The Tetsushi bit hit me like a truck. At first I thought he died instantly, but even though he didn't die the fact everyone was playing around and didn't realise the gravity of the situation made me so distressed. Like I don't blame the people around to think he was joking considering the setting they were in, but damn they took too long to realise he wasn't playing around.
I don’t know….I kind of blame the people for potentially causing more injuries to the victim. He was on the ground for a good 10 seconds, I think maybe even longer. If I were in that situation, even in a stupid game show like this one, I would notice something was wrong if someone wasn’t getting up after a couple of seconds. If it was a genuinely unavoidable situation that’d be one thing…but he knowingly violated child labor laws, went against the wishes of the experienced helicopter pilot (who said it was too low and too dangerous) and having the pyrotechnics guys just doing Willy nilly explosions! On the case of Tetsushi Yanagida; keep in mind that whenever you suspect a spinal cord injury you're NOT supposed to in ANY WAY move them unless absolutely neseccary and then only do it in a controlled manner (stabilised head, body preferably put on a board and not simply carried in your arms).
While they were joking with him, they were constantly moving his head and neck around- most likely causing the injury to become WORSE, not to mention that they pick him up in a "swan dive" position. Makes me wonder how bad the injury would have been and how differently it would have healed if they realised instantly that he might've gotten severly hurt?

Even if they'd realized what happened right away, if they'd have waited until they got a backboard out there and gotten him properly strapped on (which still would have included moving him a lot since he was fact down in the mud), he absolutely would have suffocated. A spinal injury, even with permanent paralysis, is preferable to smothering to death in the mud waiting for "proper protocol". What the hell. Them pulling him out was the only way he lived at all. And the reason he was hanging there was because unlike most people, he'd just lost all use of his body below the neck. Kind of a catch 22.

One person should kneel on both knees and while victim is being turned over, they position themselves so that his head rests on both legs ("ontop of between the thighs"). Because of how our thighs are shaped his neck and head would be resting in a stable position until emergency service would arrive.
The worst part about the man jumping in the mud was that he was CONVINCED he wasn’t even supposed to be doing this stunt if he had said no, his life would’ve been entirely different. It’s crazy. What a simple yes can do to someone’s whole life.

I have no idea why he did a full Olympics dive when he knew from watching the entire thing that the mud was only 5 inches of water. If you're losing your balance like that, you just brace with your arms under you, but not fully outstretched and rigid, you want to become a spring, not a cinder block.

I'm terrified of paralysis--Sleep paralysis is one of the most frightening things I've ever experienced. But being completely paralyzed, stuck face-down in mud and suffocating, unable to move or communicate to people, while they taunt you and pour more mud on you... that stuck with me. For a little more context regarding The Twilight Zone movie, I listened to a podcast that went over that whole tragedy. Apparently, the helicopter pilot was a Vietnam veteran, and had warned Landis that there were too many explosions, and that they were too close to the helicopter, which will cause it to malfunction and crash. Landis then proceeds to tell the crew to add MORE pyrotechnics for an even bigger explosion, without informing the pilot. He is an absolute scumbag, and I am amazed that he never seen a day in jail for that atrocity.

That was my dads job, and even though he worked 35 years as a firefighter and survived it, I am still emotionally crippled from having grown up with that daily fear of something bad happening. The thing you missed about John Landis/Twilight zone movie is that using children at night around pyrotechnics wasn't "technically" illegal, it was very fucking illegal and everyone knew that but John Landis at that time was one of the biggest names of hollywood and you didn't say no and keep your career not to mention those children were not legally employed, Landis consciously worked around child labor laws and employment laws to keep things under wraps so the producers didn't shit can him. The tragedy is that it couldve been a relativley safe scene if not for Landis ego and thoughtlessness, the pilot was a veteran helo pilot that warned landis that what he was asking was insane even for someone as experienced as him, production crew did try to undermine him but sadly failed and to this day John Landis has not been held responsible for the murder of two children.

The thing that pisses me off about the Twilight Zone helicopter crash is that Landis specifically broke the law, deceived the parents about the danger (who were speaking to them through a translator), and when multiple people told Landis about their concerns he would brush them off because he just had to film it exactly how he wanted to and didn’t care about the obvious preventable danger it posed to everyone else. The dude went to these people’s funerals, put on a big “oh woah is me” act, despite family members explicitly telling him not to come, then dragging the court case out and getting away with it even though he was clearly guilty. How he could have any career after all that is just truly disgusting.

Today is the first time I've ever seen this footage, yet I could immediately tell when he was going to kill them.
And the fact is, they could too. But they were so high on power that they treated this man holding a gun like he was a petulant child, which definitely erased any hesitation he had. That is insanity.
I was at school when this came out on the tv. I couldn't believe it! I'm actually on Albert's side on this one, though. He (the jobsworth) was warned that if it escalated, to back off and let the situation calm down. He made the decision to openly antagonise a man who was known to own firearms, and escalate the situation. He was answered with a .455 to the chest.

I was bout 12 when this happened, I remember the local news reporting on it and even at such a young age I sided with Dryden, I couldn't understand why he was being given such a hard time for building on his own land in such a remote area. I'm in my 40's now and my opinion hasn't changed.

Just a small correction to the Renard Spivey story. Although a lot of news outlets didn't report it because it made for a more clickbaity article, the wife he killed was not the one he was "happily married to for 27 years". The wife he killed, Patricia Spivey, he had only been married to since 2015 (which was towards the end of the run of the show). He had three wives, I believe the one he was married to for 27 years at the time was his second wife and he divorced her at some point after that episode which aired no later than 2008.

Nick's right to find Tetsushi's story particularly haunting. Beyond the simple shock of what happened to him and the results, there's the very real possibility that he might have been less injured, or even come away without permanent damage, if the situation had been recognized earlier -- If there had been even a single person looking after proper safety monitoring. It's this kind of TV stunts-gone-wrong story that we see repeated often, so it feels heartbreakingly preventable.

@holyroman6541 They absolutely could have and probably did further injur the spinal cord. Paralysis doesn't come from the bones breaking, it comes from damage to the spinal cord. There's various levels in which this can occur, for example, incomplete spinal cord injury.

The Vic Morrow story is so much deeper and darker than you touched on here.
He actually had a fear of working with helicopters, after having a "very serious premonition" that he would be killed in a helicopter crash years prior to this film.
Also, the SFX lead guy actually told the director that he was using too much blasting agent for the scene, and that was before he found even more of what're called "channel charges" hidden in different areas prior to filming. Think of them as conical mortars...
Another failure was in the helicopter pilots safety procedures (or failure to follow said procedures). Once again, the director demanded he fly as close as he did so that the helicopter could be framed against the backdrop of the burning village, as they'd waited all day to film this single scene and only had one shot since he'd planned on essentially decimating the entire on-site set to film this one scene.
The children were also paid off the books to avoid scrutiny from labor laws for having the children in a hazardous environment and working as late as they were.
(Not so) Fun Fact: Stephen Spielberg and John Landis were two very close friends prior to this, and Spielberg actually co-produced the movie, but he completely broke off their friendship and wanted nothing to do with Landis for decades afterwards. I don't believe they've ever reconciled.
The reason I know so much about this is because Vic Morrow was one of my Dad's favorite actors, and my Dad was a huge movie buff, so he'd done research of his own in his youth, and once he'd told me about it, I was a tech kid, so I dove in too.

For the Twilight Zone movie one, I heard somewhere that the helicopter pilot was actually a veteran who had been flying that model for years and had said before-hand that the whole stunt was a terrible, dangerous idea and, I think, almost didn't go through with participating. If I remember correctly, they basically brushed him off and said "Nah, it'll be fiiiine." So much of that one scene actually was illegal. Horrifically preventable.

John Landis should’ve been locked up after that incident. That was manslaughter no doubt about it. His idea, his casting, his direction of the scene. It absolutely infuriates me that not only did he get away but also was able to enrich himself in the process.

The Twilight Zone accident is so much worse than you alluded to. Vic Morrow, and the child actor he was holding was decapitated by the helicopters whirling blades, the other child was crushed under the skids of the aircraft. This footage was showed countless times at the trial, and in part on news broadcasts. The only reason it still exists is that someone ripped a copy from the work print, and sold it to a Faces of Death knock off, Death Scenes. That’s why it has the creepy music behind it, it was from the video’s footage, which was Death Scenes 2. Additionally, Morrow’s head can actually be seen floating near the crashed chopper.
No wonder the footage had that ear piercing music. I know that's the point, but hearing that music over the slowed down footage just fills me with a completely different kind of dread

Bit of a misconception with Twilight Zone: While Landis DID enjoy a successful career in the early to mid eighties afterwards, subsequent lengthy public legal battles made the incident more well known, and a tell all book that was published have pretty much left Landis' career destroyed, with only sporadic gigs from the 1990s onwards. In fact, when Landis directed an episode of Masters of Horror in the 2000s, a teamster was on set reading the book (making sure Landis could see him). He then very sarcastically asked Landis to sign it. When Landis explained that that was a difficult time in his life and trying to move past it, the teamster again very sarcastically asked him to sign it, to which Landis stormed off.
His suffering is well deserved

The case with Donald Herbert upsets me because that was clearly a case of negligence by the place keeping him. If someone is putting their life at risk with violent thrashing, relying on someone observing them is begging for something terrible to happen. I don't know enough about the cause to suggest medication that could have been used, but simple restraints would have sufficed.

Thank you for not actually showing the footage of the Twilight Zone set crash, I know it's probably more to do with YT guidelines but it's a truly horrific stretch of seconds. I was watching a documentary series on Shudder a few months back and one episode was about this accident. The episode played the full footage of Morrow running with the children and the out of control helicopter crashing right into them, it was horrific.
I saw that on Shudder, and the set designer guy. He is still so haunted by all of it.

I too am from the Buffalo NY area and was working at the nursing home that Donald Herbert resided at. It was an absolute shock for the employees when he started talking. There was also talk of it being potentially short lived since it is all reality, uncharted and outside of typical recovery. I am sure the value of that time he gained was absolutely invaluable to his family and friends.

It takes a special person to be a fire fighter and a nurse. My adopted dad was a fire chief for 40 years, my sister brother in law niece and newphews still do it. I tried but my ptsd made shit worse. That's terrible he passed that way.

I work in one and even if patients are at risk of falling, it's considered a restraint to do that and it's sometimes illegal to restrain patients. Although I will say, they could have placed a pillow underneath the mattress on either side and it may have helped, that's what we do if we have patients that are at risk of falling out of bed.
John Landis was explicitly warned not to have the helicopter at that low of an altitude with the pyrotechnics in place, and he just ignored all safety concerns. It is simply disgusting to me that he was never held accountable.

I think the most horrifying thing on earth is being unheard in a dire situation. Tesushi desperately needing help and Herbert being trapped in is own head, countless people who can't communicate in a near vegetative state and hearing people debate pulling the plug--hell, even drowning or like, being unable to tell someone you're in pain after a stroke or seizure or something and you just sit there, aware and stuck in your own head. Its something that has always truly scared me deep down. This idea of screaming for help, but no one helps, because they simply don't understand how desperately you need it. Its not that they're ignoring you or don't care, thats easy to process. They literally have no idea and you can't tell them, and later they will have to suffer because of it. Its truly the deepest, most disturbing concepts to me.

The only thing I can do is chomp my teeth together, that's all I can move. And sometimes it will wake my partner and he knows if he hears that noise, he needs to shake me awake immediately. Sometimes no one is around though, and I have to keep trying to move until I'm finally able to move my head to wake up. 😩

I couldnt move or speak but could hear my thoughts. I screamed Jesus in my head loud as I could. Im not the most religious person by the way. I just kept screaming Jesus God and the shadow got scared and I was released. Idk what sleep paralysis is exactly but I truly believe I saved my life that night. Sorry if this sounds wild. I havent had it since that night.

About The Tetsushi Yanagida. I heard of this incident maybe 10 months prior, and I thought he's died from that moment. Now it's still sad but knowing he's alive and trying his best to live his life and even reconnected to the show is one of the best things to know.
I hope the participant who asked him to join doesn't blame herself too much for what's happened and I hope he forgave her for the accident.

@@n.b.l.5709 I almost did that at my grandpa's pond when it was getting dug out, when I was a kid. Decided last minute to go feet first just cause it would've made a bigger splash, water was only like 3 inches deep, it was a good 6-8 foot dive I would've broke my neck for sure
But yeah that was gut wrenchingly sad to watch especially when you see him trying to shake his head knowing his neck was akready broken, the pain and fear he had to be experiencing must've been unbearable.

John Landis was even warned that it was dangerous, and he went ahead anyway and urged the helicopter even closer to the actors. The whole story of his actions both leading up to and after the accident are despicable really.

I recently watched some documentary about how some producers break thy rules to get the shot they want. One ended with someone being hit by a train. Where they weren't supposed to be filming.
I remember watching some documentary on what happened on the Twilight Movie set. Watching the helicopter fall and the blades spin made my heart drop into my stomach. Absolutely gutwrenching to see, especially knowing those kids should not have been there and all the corners that were cut that led to the tragedy. The fact there was little more than a slap on the wrist as punishment for the people responsible is such a miscarriage of justice.

You can find the entire footage of the incident on youtube. You'd think one of the giant fireballs would hide the crash, but the copter falls onto the actors mere seconds after the blast and catches you off guard.

Despite John Landis never being charged for his negligence there are still plenty of people who refused to work with him and there has actually been sort of a dark shadow over his career despite his success. I read the book on this and it went into all of the court documents and every single situation leading up to the tragedy. There is no doubt in the judge's mind that there were multiple laws being violated but at the end of the day these people they have this weird diplomatic oath to these directors in Hollywood and if you look into this case despite it starting in the late '80s it was not finished until the early 2000s.

Man I actually felt something on Tetsushi's story. That's rare when I'm watching a video. But just the way things went were so brutal. I couldn't not feel dread. But hey, he lived. That's very good. I think I honestly felt real relief when I heard he survived but damn. Just a few seconds later? He got so lucky in that regard. I mean the situation isn't lucky but him surviving it certainly is.
I know my gut just turned watching him being messed with while entirely limp. I know those tv showers were pretty extreme with jokes but I'm shocked no one really checked on him. When my friends would mess with me like that my ass was pulling them out of the pool bc that shit is serious.

I don't know why more people aren't talking about the age difference in the first chapter? He was 63 when he killed her, she was 52. This was a decade after the show where he said he had been married for over 27 years. During the episode, he was ~53 and she was ~42. He was 26 when they got married, and she was 15!
The story of Donald Herbert is so heartbreaking. When he woke up and was just asking for someone to tell him how long he'd been gone, and then him simply falling out of bed being the reason he finally passed away.
What gets me about the Twilight Zone incident is that Morrow actually had a feeling he was going to die before they filmed that part. If he had just listened to that part of him that felt that way and not agreed to the scene, I imagine that this could have been avoided. Always trust your gut feelings, people.

It should not have been up to the family to stay up ALL NIGHT with the firefighter. Hospitals and nursing homes have "babysitters" for that EXACT reason. I know because I was one. When I worked as a CNA/GNA at my hospital, one of the many things I did daily was to sit with patients who were deemed "wanderers" or who were fall risks or at risk of becoming violent.
Sadly, nursing homes are severely under staffed.

I would assume the hospital was understaffed because seemingly they wouldn't designate a nurse to the room to watch him. When he clearly was not a "normal case".

The third story absolutely broke me. I cannot begin to imagine the pain of losing a loved one for ten years, believing they were gone forever, eventually getting them back, feeling that level of happiness and joyful disbelief, and losing them again shortly after. And simply trying to imagine being the person who was lost, found, and lost again... is just horrific. It's one of the most cruel and horrible things life could possibly to do a person. My heart goes out to Donald's friends and family.

John Landis should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent, not just with the slap on the wrist he got. He also should have been shunned by a critical mass of people and institutions in the film industry to effectively prevent him from continuing to rake in millions and millions of dollars over the following decades, as he did. Stephen Spielberg unfriending him was not nearly enough. That should have only been the beginning.

A little background on Albert Dryden. He was always a gun fanatic and his first gun was a Webley revolver, which he bought off of his friend as a teenager. He often made his own firearms and even missiles and mortars in his own garden shed. At one point several years before the shooting incident, the RAF picked up several unidentified dots on their radar and sent the military to where the dots had been seen. They had feared that they were Soviet bombs or planes (this was during the Cold War) but when they reached the destination, they found not bombs or planes, but Albert Dryden, who was firing homemade mortars into the air, so powerful that they were picked up on the RAF radar. From here most of Dryden's story is covered here but one fact that wasnt mentioned was that Collinson was murdered with a Webley revolver, the same Webley that Dryden had bought decades before.

If they knew he had guns it sure was idiotic of them to send people there to forcibly demolish his own home on his own land that he had built with his own hands and not provide them any security in case he grabbed a gun and wouldn't back down. I don't agree with either side on this matter (he shouldn't have killed someone but I do understand how upset and pushed to the limit he was) but they probably should have secured him first and then done what they felt they had the right to do under the stupid law. He even warned them several times that he was going to use force if he had to.

I was a defendant on Cristina's Court many years ago; everyone was hired through an agency and auditioned, then we were given our character and case outline about 15 minutes before we went in front of the camera. I met my "husband" right then, and largely whether you won the case or not came down to how well you could improv on the spot because you had one take to get it right. Can't say I remember that guard, but it's absolutely chilling to think I was in the same room as him.

The fact that he dove off and went limp like that and everyone just... Did that. My immediate fear would have been that he knocked himself out cold and to yank him from the water. He was completely unresponsive and they were shoving him deeper. It's so appalling and sad.

I think the chances of surviving a helicopter crash are far higher than surviving near it. Just like cars, helicopters are design for, in the case of it crashing, the crew have a higher chance of surviving. Considering also the height it was flying I think it was safe for the crew itself in the case of a crash.
But man, it's so depressing to learn three people lost their lives in such a tragic way. The worst part is that you can't even blame the actors and the children parents. They have no extensive knowledge to deduct the danger of it all, meanwhile the production team had full knowledge that it was both illegal and insanely dangerous. ):
Yeah thats true, helicopter crashes are a bit different than airplane crashes still dangerous but higher chance of surviving and maybe even not having any damage to your body or something
