Sher Shah Suri, a Pashtun ruler and military commander of the Suri dynasty, made significant contributions to the Grand Trunk Road during the 16th century. He introduced a system of caravanserais to provide security and shelter for travelers, extended the road to connect important centers, and standardized the system of weights and measures to facilitate trade and commerce.
Over the centuries, the road has undergone numerous changes and extensions, and today passes through several historic cities such as Lahore, Amritsar, Delhi, Agra, and Peshawar. The Grand Trunk Road is not just a road but a cultural and historical icon, connecting various religions, cultures, and civilizations from the past along its length.
Some of the significant landmarks that are situated on the Grand Trunk Road include the Red Fort in Delhi, the Harmandir Sahib Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, the Khyber Pass near Peshawar, and the ancient city of Taxila in Pakistan.
The road is also known for its vibrant local markets, diverse cultural and ethnic communities, and culinary delights, including traditional foods like kebabs, biryanis, and various sweets. With its vast history and diverse cultural significance, the Grand Trunk Road remains a significant and vital transport route of South Asia.
Today the Grand Trunk Road remains a vital artery of commerce and transportation throughout South Asia, connecting major cities and playing a significant role in the economic and social development of the region.

Grand Trunk road( G.T road) also known as National Highway 2 (NH2) passes by my native village in west bengal. It is the best highway created by Vajpayee under the golden quadrilateral project.
In which book you read that GT road was built by Vajpayee?Time is not far when people like you will say that it was built by Godse.
@@sharifalamkhan4395 The road was present before Suru, it was called Uttarpatha. It was a single road, always used to traffic jams and accidents. In 2002, Vajpayee made this a super world class highway. You wouldn't get this knowledge in madrasas.

यह मार्ग मौर्य साम्राज्य से भी पूर्व का था। सम्राट अशोक महान द्वारा इस मार्ग पर लाखों की संख्या में फलदार वृक्ष, जगह जगह कूए बावड़ियाँ के साथ यात्रियों के स्थान स्थान पर छोटी बड़ी धर्मशालाएँ बनवाई गई, इनमें भोजन की व्यवस्था भी थी
जगह जगह सुरक्षा हेतु चौकियाँ बनवाई गई, उसी को अपने हिसाब से शेरशाह सूरी ने अपना नाम दिया।
