  • I challenged my American friend to 5-Pin bowling in Canada which is played with smaller balls! It was his first time ever playing 5-pin and he was so thrown off. We played 10-pin too so we could compare it. Pride is on the line!

    In New Brunswick I grew up playing "candle pin" bowling. I would say a cross between 5 pin and 10 pin.... in candle pin there are 10 thinner pins and a small ball like in 5 pin. I've played all 3 styles and I have to say I like the candle pin better! There may be a few places in Ontario with candle pin bowling.... you both have to try it.... even playing field.

    As a Canadian, even I learned something. I too played 5 pin bowling throughout my life and had no idea it was uniquely Canadian. 5 pin is so much easier for children to play as well. I never liked 10 pin because I have big fingers which required me to use the heaviest ball, which I found harder to control. Anyways, I really enjoyed the video. Thanks.

      For 10 pin they actually do make different sized holes for the same weights. Like they have 10 pound balls with large finger holes. Could be what you’re looking for!

      @ryanm7171 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure they probably do exist for people ordering custom bowling balls or maybe larger American bowling alleys with bigger budgets for buying bowling balls. However, in every Canadian bowling alley I have been to, they haven't. Usually the bigger bowling alleys will have both 10 and 5 pin bowling, so they probably don't have it have a large enough budget to supply the type of bowling ball you described. With my age and the disability I acquired later in life, using the type of bowling ball you described would actually allow me to try and enjoy 10 pin bowling again.

      Finger size has nothing to do with ball weight
      You can use any weight you want no matter the size of your hand, 10 pin bowling really requires you to get your own ball customized to yourself for you to enjoy it the most I believe

    It was funny watching Jason try to bowl 5-pin with the same curve as you use in 10 pin. Im not a bowler, but I was pretty sure that’s not what you want to do.
    I’m also really glad he made the Urlington joke at the end.
    Where I grew up, we only had 5-pin for the longest time and I remember it being a big deal when one of the lanes got 10 pin as well. A birthday party I was at we did a 10 pin game, and then a 5 pin game and I felt like Superman chucking those tiny balls around after getting used to the 10 pin balls. I’m pretty sure that was my highest score ever.

    • @surlycanadian
      @surlycanadian 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can curve or hook the ball in 5 pin just like in 10 pin, but you have to throw the ball slow enough for the rotation to have any effect. I throw my ball really fast in 5 pin, so I don’t have the patience for how long it takes a heavy 10 pin ball to traverse the lane lol.

    We have 2 "versions" of your 5 pin. 1 is CandlePin and the other is DuckPin. They are played with 10 pins and the rules are basically the same as typical 10 pin. However the ball is small like Canadian 5 ball as are the pins. Hence "CandlePin" or "DuckPin". Definitely agree with it being VERY frustrating, Especially if you've grown up with the typical 10 pin w/larger ball!

    I grew up in Windsor, ON, and played 10-pin almost exclusively. I even played in tournaments in Michigan (not in the top flight, but still very fun!). I've found switching to the 5-pin game very difficult, but it makes sense because controlling the small ball isn't easy. Hooking the ball in 5-pin doesn't help very much, and I think your fingertips can put a hook on the ball that you don't anticipate. They're very different games - and so are candlepins and duckpins (which don't exist in Ontario AFAIK).

    According to Merriam-Webster, “The concept of the five-hole likely originated with Jacques Plante, NHL goalie and author of the 1972 book On Goaltending. Plante numbered five 'holes' in the net that goalies needed to protect: four at the corners of the net, and the hole between the goalie’s legs. Though there is some debate about how to number holes one through four - Plante lists one through four as stick-side low, glove-side low, glove-side high, and stick-side high - all sources follow Plante’s lead when it comes to the five-hole. Though no one uses one-, two-, three-, or four-hole when referring to shots or saves, five-hole has stuck for shorthand for ‘between the legs.’ ”

      @@JosephD I think (and this is just my opinion) that bowling borrowed it from the Jacques Plante model, and it makes perfect sense. The bowling "5 hole" closely resembles the Plante "5 hole", so my guess is that the former borrowed it from the latter. The fact that the pin is worth 5 points is thus a coincidence that just really worked out nicely :)

    Great to see a video comparing the games and bringing an American who never played it along. Played 5 pin growing up and would say 5 pin requires more skill to be good at it and is less forgiving than 10 pin because of less pin action. Have also bowled duckpin a few times (regulation duckpin..we have duckpin mini bowling here with 30 foot lanes and while it's fun, it's not the same as regulation bowling). I've always wanted to try 5-pin but have yet to do so. About 20 years ago I was in Windsor, ON and planned on going to a local bowling alley before heading back to the states. And sadly for me but awesome for the centre, the house was full of old ladies in a morning league. I didn't have time to stick around so I wasn't able to try. Next time I cross the border I plan on finally trying 5-pin! While I love tenpin and it's action, the small ball games are much more challenging. Getting a mark feels like much more an accomplishment than in tenpin for sure.

    I think 5-pin is actually harder than 10, but it might just come down to what you are used to. Next road trip to the Maritimes for some real donairs and candlepin bowling... ;)

    It feels a little bit related to German Kegeln, which has 9 pins, different sized balls without holes, small light ones, big heavy ones…. But no narrow lane, which does not become wider towards the end (like a reversed funnel) like the American styled lanes.

    That looked fun! My husband puts malt vinegar on his fries. I'm not a fan of any vinegar on my fries. It's either ketchup or cheese (cheese with bacon and pickled jalapenos are nice too). I don't get poutine because my guts don't like gravy, but if I wanted it many restaurants sell it near me.

    I can’t bowl to save my life so I really enjoyed watching you two😆. Based on your demonstrations I think the best game would be a 10pin setup ( more pins) with a 5 pin ball ( lighter weight). 😁
    Great editing job by the way.

    I bowled candlepin, duckpin , 5 pin, and picked up 10 pin few years back and am still active in both 5 pin and 10 pin leagues. I believe a 5 pin bowler will adapt better to 10 pin then a 10 pin bowler to a 5 pin. 5 pin bowlers are great spare shooters in 10 pin well me anyways .

    I had no idea 5 pin was a thing. In the UK we have skittles, played in pubs on a dry lane. 9 pins, 3 balls, around about the same size as those Canadian balls. The pins are large & spread out. Seem like pretty similar games.

    I understand the reticence to throw the 5-pin ball at full speed, if you're not used to a ball that size. I bowled candlepin for the first time in South Boston and I launched the first ball 2/3 of the way down the lane, and that's only a few ounces lighter than the 5-pin balls I'm used to.

    Up next will be the Duckpin Challenge. In the Northeastern US there is a type of bowling called Duckpin that uses ten pins but 5-pin bowling balls. Have fun guys!

      There’s Duckpins here in the Philippines, same just like your US Duckpin but a different environment with Different type of Wood Lanes (yet they were never been oiled), most Duckpin Centers don’t have Air conditioning and of course majority of Duckpin Centers here have Pinboys while others still have Sherman Pinsetters

    The 5 hole is called the 5 hole because the 4 other holes are the 4 corners of the net: stick side high and low and glove side high and low. But we can pretend that it got its name from 5-pin bowling.

      According to Wikipedia, the 5 hole terminology did come from 5 pin bowling. Specifically what happens when someone punches the headpin.

    I tried 5 pin bowling when I was a kid, and I hated it. The ball either kept going right between the pins without hitting any, or if it hit any, it only knocked over one pin.

    He never told him you don't have to throw a curve in 5 pin. In fact, it's a good idea to just throw it as hard and straight as you can. The lighter ball needs some speed to get those pins moving, harder throw is an advantage that isn't really there in 10 pin.
    Whether 10 pin or 5 pin bowling is better is of course utterly personal opinion, what is objective fact is that 5 pin bowling is more accessible to casual players. If they were both introduced from scratch today, it's 5 pin bowling that would win out. But inertia is a thing, and I doubt the States ever changes.

    The 5 hole refers to the number 5 shot on Canadian practice hockey nets. #1 was always the top right, 2 top left, 3 bottom left, 4 bottom right, 5 between the legs

    wow, I did not know they don't have five-pin bowling in the U.S. I have only played 10-pin once and I think I nearly broke all my fingers. bowling is one sport I must say I suck at, if i get over 100 points I'm happy. I've been in good shape and I've been in bad shape, but no matter what shape I am in, I am sore as hell after playing bowling.

    The key to 5 pin is bowling as straight as possible. Hit the centre pin on a bit of an angle to get a strike.
