@shriniwasp 10 years ago this bhairavi is sang by various singers and contributions of each of the singer is uncomparable. this bharavi sang by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is ultimate and excellent and i amvery fortunate to to state that i have heard this bharavi in live concert from voice of Shri Bhimsen Joshi during savai gandharve festival in Pune
When I was thrown out of service as Additional Secretary to Government by Khaleda Zia, ex-PM of Bangladesh on 20th April, 2003 and I had been banished from the Secretariat, the seat of power, I silently heard this Thumri times and again. My mother stood silently beside me and understood that something had gone wrong with my job. I had seven more years to serve the country and for years I prepared myself for this job. Believe U me, this song gave me solace. Wazed Ali Shah had Metia Buruz to go, I had nowhere to go but find solace, and peace in Thumris and sad songs specially classical songs. "BABUL MORA" is now part of my life.
What a involvement with the best wordings of the great Nabab of Awadh and found the solace it's a eternal peace our ancestors have left for millions of us. This is our tradition and culture.
One can listen to this unique jugalbandi thousand time and each time you discover a new path the sur-singar takes. I can't get enough of this Bhairavi. My salute to two great vocalist of bygone era of Hindustani classical music.
Anil Biswas is no more but casually what he said, left me speechless. The fact remains that ‘Babul Mora’ sung by Saigal will be listened by ardent music lovers time and again for ages to come. About the others, no one can predict. Rest, I leave it to the listeners; let them evaluate.
What a wonderful Jugalbandi. Wah! Kya Baat. Thanks. For the person who disliked this clip, "Get a life! Do NOT bother leaving feedback if you do NOT have a deep understanding of the singers, singing tradition and composition itself. Your little brain may not be capable of comprehending the simple beauty of this piece. Save yourself the hassle in the future. In Punjabi they say - Jhotay aggay been bajaon da ki faida. Bhens ke aage, Been bajane ka kiya faida."
Ustad Faiyaz Khan as well sang in the year-1932 i.e prior to Saigal. Interestingly, Jagjit Singh -the well known ghazal singer came to limelight by ‘Babul Mora’ which he sang along with his wife Chitra Singh in early seventies. He recorded ‘Babul Mora’ yet another time, which was his solo version.
This thumri was penned by Nawb Wajid Ali Shah--however is was written much earlier while he was still on the throne. When he was exiled, British asked him to leave Lucknow before sun rise (to avoid any protest ). His carvan started from from Lucknow early in the morning, since news had leaked out hundred were on both sides of street. Nawab's court singer sang this thumri at that occasion and people started crying. Nawab gave his Navlakha Haar to singer but he refuse to accept
The list of luminaries who sang ‘Babul Mora’ includes -Bhim Sen Joshi, Kesarbai Kerkar, Siddheshwari Devi, Rasoolan Bai, Khadim Hussain Khan, Mushatq Hussain Khan, Girija Devi, Shobha Gurtu & Girija Devi (jugalbandi), Kishori Amonkar & Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Kishori Amonkar, Jagmohan, Padma Talwalkar, Shanti Vaidyanathan Sharma, Mahender Chopra (son-in-law of K.L.Saigal) and none other than ghazal queen Begum Akhtar.

listen to kishoritai amonkar ....pain required in bhairavi thumri reflects truly in her velvety golden voice..2nd Vidushi Girijadevi...created magic...others all are mastreo...but pain-dard in these two great artist presentation was amazing..heavenly...
unless blessings from that omnipresent such performance cannot be taken place. At first we remembers the great Kundanlal Saigal. But after gone through Various comments the history reveals add aroma more.
It is sad that no one remembers the great malka Jan who according to many was the Queen of bhairabi who first popularized this song through gramophone record even before 1910!
It is generally debated as to who sang ‘Babul Mora’, the best? To me, it is a ridiculous subject; similar to the comparison of a Rose flower with Jasmine and Jasmine with Lily.
However, once I discussed different versions of ’Babul Mora’ with the music maestro Anil Biswas, on such aspect of comparison. To this his remarks were simply fascinating, when he said- “Bete, Saigal ke alawa kisi ka naiher nahin chhuta”.
@green0fairy0boy what aartib40 said, repeting a line again and again conveying different emotions, meanings and feelings, is called bol banao and these 2 artists are the queens of bol banao ki thumri so, in their own different ways, they knwo how to sing proper bol banao. Many khyal singers cannot sing proper bol banao, that's all.
This comparison in unnecessary, every individual has their own style, flavour and class of rendering and listening. Bhimsen Joshi, Kishori Amonkar, Saigal, Jagjit Singh, begum akhtar, and many other have sung this, and you can't say one is better than other.
