I meet Moebius one time, in Belgium He tell me, on Incal, "one day, one page" But one page mean storyboard, ink, color, everything! Its my favorite comic artist! Thanks for the video
If you’re interested in getting a deeper understanding of The Incal, ya gotta check out Jodorowsky’s thoughts about the Tarot. Both him and Moebius use the symbolism from Tarot cards all the time and if I remember correctly every card from the major arcana shows up in this story. John DiFool is card 0 of the Tarot, The Fool, for example. Really fun stuff!
Thank you. I was going to comment that point. Jodorowsky wrote a book about tarot of Marseille, describing each lame as a step by step process of a human's development, describing some kind of archetypal journey through life. Incal means inner call (the 'anima'), and the last pages tell the union between Difool's self and the whole universe (21st lame is called Le Monde, the ultimate achievement, the highest connection between you and the universe, when you + the world make one). Le Monde is followed by Le Fou, the only lame that has no number, so its place is before the first and after the last lames, because life is eternal cycle. That's why the last panel of the Incal is the same as the first. Like a Möbius' strip.
Here I am... in my late 50's and remembering how I'd bought the Incal 1,2, and 3 and suddenly I'm sad for the kid I used to be. Becuase back then, I had no friends to share this deep appreciation and even obsession over the comics, especially my faves. So thanks to you two for bringing back the teen I used to be and being as geeky/nerdish as I used to be... hell, as I still am!
Read Incal from "Heavy Metal Presents Moebius" back in 1981, they were selling them at the local 7-11, blew me away! Also later when I found a comic book store, I jumped on PC comics "Dalgoda" because I thought it was the dog character from Incal. I was wrong, but not disappointed. Good times!
A copy of one of the Dune workbooks is up for auction now, I think. I’ve been saying for years it should be printed…it IS A BOOK…it os the FILM on paper. The storyboards for Bladerunner are in book form, what about this. Yes, you should start a campaign…Who cares about a film, get the book out there!!!
I bought my Incal hardcover here in Brazil last week. I just waited 10 years to buy, and man, the wait was totally worth. My favourite comic to this date, and the latest Brazilian edition (by Pipoca & Nanquim) is AMAZING. I'm a fanboy of both Moebius and Jodo, the reading was such a trip, full of hidden and not so hidden symbols for those who like to search this field (tarot, alchemy and all kinds of weirdness)!
I finally read Incal, so now I am able to watch this video! And an awesome video it is. For me, all of that detail you were talking about in terms of background characters, costumes, architecture, etc., falls into the category of "world building", and I feel that Moebius is a master at that. I recently bought the entire Edena cycle, and man, sometimes I just spend time going back and looking at the world building in that, and in the Airtight Garage, too (and of course The Incal). The stories range from playfully fun to mind blowingly amazing, but no matter what is going on narratively, the world building art is worth the cover price alone, and worth looking at over and over again throughout the years. Thanks for this great video about it all, and thanks for pointing me in the Dune documentary direction! I will certainly be rewatching this video from time to time!!! What you guys do here is a treasure.
Signing every (or every second) page is common in France and Belgium, because these comics were traditionally published in short weekly segments, generally 1-2 pages.
Moebius's hatching is so accurate, and in a very unique way. Big respect for my favorite drawer. And when you think this comic was edited so early, and all the influence he makes after this, throw the manga and also the movies. Incredible artist.
It's called Fifth Element. Moebius and his French artist colleague whom worked on Valerian and Lauraline did the concept art for Fifth Element directed by Luc Bassant who directed Valerian and Bladerunner2044. A lot of the same story beats were so close to Incal Jodorowski tried sueing Luc Bassant but it didn't go through cause Moebius worked on both projects.
Thanks guys! This was so great! I read this, serially, in it's original American run in _Heavy Metal_ in the 80s. The story ended at the acid lake whirlpool. 8 years ago I purchased the big _Incal_ omnibus, and then Gimenez' _Meta Barons._ Such great science fiction story telling and art. And, yes, I have watched the _Dune_ documentary several times. I wish that storyboard book would be available somewhere, even as a PDF. As you mentioned, it was Jodorowsky's son, Brontis, who was to play Paul in _Dune,_ and was the kid in _El Topo._ Next, do Caza. Also, Liberatore!
How those two met is such an amazing story in itself, then how they created the storyboard for Dune, absolute magic of two amazingly creative people. So glad that I found the documentary, since then I have bought the The Incal, and The Meta-Barons and read them over constantly.
Recently was released in Brazil a new edition of Incal in like 7 years. Happy to see that this work is more alive than ever around the world! I read Incal once but I didn't quite understand it, hope to get this new edition and appreciate more this Moebius and Jodorowsky's masterpiece!!!
Been meaning to subscribe, partly because I realized you guys grew up in da burgh, but mainly because I really like what you cover. Man, I wish I had bought these when they came out. Not so cheap these days! Thanks!
The Incal is great (I love this video of course because i really like to hear you guys talk about comics) but I also want you to show and talk about The Airtight Garage because it really is mind-bending! (Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think you have done it yet).
Everything I've heard of this series makes me want to read it for myself more & more. BTW, I really love you guys' enthusiasm for comics! It reminds me why I love em, too.
Definitely will be Kayfabe Effecting these Incal books. Thanks again for hooking it up. It’s always worth grabbing the stuff you guys recommend. Everything looks even better in person.
15:24 you guys skipped over the genius of the “sex bank” idea. The touch screen with like 15 kinds of butts, 15 kinds of breasts, lips, eyes, etc. Difool makes his selections and the combination of his choices shows up at the door, personified. When I read this as a kid (and it may have been in French, which I could read growing up next door to Quebec) it blew my mind :-)
This Gen X'r just discovered your channel. This is my Heaven. Just bought the reprint of 40 Days in the Desert. I can't keep up with all his other books, but teying. You boys are rockin' it big time. 💪❤️👍
I HAVE A QUESTION PLEASE! What is an inhibitor? And what does he mean when he talks about emotion seeking paralysis sweep?? Please explain its mentioned multiple times at least in the incal.
As an european guy (from Galicia... look it up if you feel like it) I often find that what are considered essential classics around here may not be known or sell well in the US market. The reverse is rarely the case: American comic's classics are classics in here, whether we talk about mainstream or underground stuff. So I have this question: is the Incal the essential work that is here (one of the most important works in the history of comics), or is it one of those things that only connoisseurs know? What about its spin-offs, the prequel and sequel? And what about other works by Moebius, like The Hermetic Garage or Edena?
So excited that someone has taken the task to make this into a movie now! I hope that it succeeds so that we can have the Metabaron spinoff that I always wanted!
I just read this book this year! One thing you didn't comment on that proves Moebius's attention to detail is that the future fashion apparently is based off of like 18th century style? With John Difool's buckle shoes and britches
49:13 Jim: "...the tech devices that are that are launching these rays these energy beams! Ed: Yeah that'll that'll give you tumors on your nuts." Had me red faced choking on my morning coffee fellas. Comedy gold!
40 years now... wow, talk about timeless! If these were just published now maybe experts in the field like you guys could look at them and be able to pick out when they were actually written.
I’m writing this on 11/20/2021 One of the Dune books you describe in the documentary. The large one with all the art by Möbius went up on auction two weeks ago and the starting bid was 40k I’m sure it sold.
Remember... In The Goddess, Jodorowsky had scenes where the protagonist was in a city where everyone had a silly mask on because they followed the rules wiithout question...
If you don't mind reading comics digitally, these volumes are frequently on sale on Comixology. I bought the whole series on there for less than six bucks.
The Emperoress is the name of the ruler of humanity and pops up in the Metabarons several times too. Very fun idea, a lot easier on the eyes in this book than the Metabarons...
29:59 That drawing of the dog-faced, Kill Wolf-head, really reminds me of Richard Corben's Rolf. I'm not a fan of Jodorowsky's writing, but Moebius' artwork really carries everything along. Epic got a lot of my spare cash back in the 1980s. The production on Akira was so cool; especially where the spines all match, except for the issue where the second Akira event occurs.
Comparing a lot of what I see here to my 2016 edition. The text is all changed and I don’t know if should be p.o.’d or not. The version you guys have seems like it has more charm in the lettering and translation.
beatiful artwork, moebius was a genius. is really cool see how his art is going trough a kind of reinassance. i hope this bring a more critical light in the work of jodorowski, cause this is not the best script of him.
33.27 - The robots that remind Jim of George Lucas ('THX1138' - 1971), are spot on from the robot butlers in the Woody Allen movie 'Sleeper' - 1973 any chance of you looking at 'Epic Illustrated'? Marvel's answer to Heavy Metal, that lead to the Epic publications imprint
I was looking at my spanish edition (basically the french edition at the time, but in spanish) while I was watching the video, and I noticed something was off. First I thought it was about color but then I realized... the edition shown in the video has glossy paper! That's a big WTF

I just watched the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary last night, so this is perfect!
I had this years ago (. 1990s) and read it a bunch. Really enjoyed this video as it brought it all back to me, with good commentary.
Your analysis is amazing. One of my fav comics ever. I appreciate this channel so much 🤗

my favorite series. incal, after the incal, before the incal , the metabarons. I love all those comics.
The Incal is the Number one Dune's offspring, and completely deserves a cinematic or a series adaptation
It's called Fifth Element. Oh crap I forgot I actually posted this! Uuh, well I didn't mean for it to be combative as much as stating a fact. heh
Thanks for making this. I just started re-reading this like 3 days ago. perfect timing! great work as always!
Thanks guys! This was so great!

Oh, and, check out this animated trailer of _Incal_ that didn't happen (yet) from a decade ago:
th-cam.com/video/c4Vkyzrs1Fk/w-d-xo.html
8:40 pretty sure this sequence was swiped by Lucas in the prequels
How those two met is such an amazing story in itself, then how they created the storyboard for Dune, absolute magic of two amazingly creative people. So glad that I found the documentary, since then I have bought the The Incal, and The Meta-Barons and read them over constantly.

I have been waiting when Ed and Jim would do Moebius. He is my favorite comics artist, my cat is named Moebius after him.
So true- the Jodowarsky documentary is fantastic
It's awesomely unreal art and work. Induplicable, and spell check says that's not a word, so it can be theirs.
Been meaning to subscribe, partly because I realized you guys grew up in da burgh, but mainly because I really like what you cover. Man, I wish I had bought these when they came out. Not so cheap these days! Thanks!

These videos are one of the highlights of my week! Thank you for making them :)
wooooooo thanks guys. i love this work ::) i have this books a long time in my heart.
Everything I've heard of this series makes me want to read it for myself more & more.
BTW, I really love you guys' enthusiasm for comics! It reminds me why I love em, too.
I grew up on Moebius, and I'm so happy to see The Incal being reviewed with such passion, in 2021. Thanks for this.
Lmao! I wonder how many times Jim said “deuce” ex machina instead of Deus ex machina in their backlog of videos before he heard about it?
Definitely will be Kayfabe Effecting these Incal books. Thanks again for hooking it up. It’s always worth grabbing the stuff you guys recommend. Everything looks even better in person.

I'm loving these videos since finding them. Keep up the good work!
Just read this series last year. SO FREAKING GOOD! Can't wait to get all the books in this universe.
Nice! I was 10 when I started. Blew my mind soooooo hard!!!111!!!
Love this. Moebius is one of my favourite artists. Epic tales with incredible attention to detail.
Jodorowsky's Bouncer should be looked at as well. Really good series.
This Gen X'r just discovered your channel. This is my Heaven. Just bought the reprint of 40 Days in the Desert. I can't keep up with all his other books, but teying. You boys are rockin' it big time. 💪❤️👍

Thank you for sharing this
Still some of the most indelible panels and designs in the history of illustration and comics... this is eternal work
Said screw it and bought myself the collected edition! Can't wait to give it a read 💖
"...but we want him on the team, look at his head!" LOL
So excited that someone has taken the task to make this into a movie now! I hope that it succeeds so that we can have the Metabaron spinoff that I always wanted!
Fantastic review, Moebius and Jodorowsky were so ahead of their time ! Dune documentary is essential, thanks for talking about it !
I've been re-fascinated with Moebius this past week, you've been reading my mind!
No mention about square balloons? 😏 I love them
Great work on this! Thank you!
Where is the campaign to get the dune art book published?
How can we contribute to make that happen?
I wanna look at a copy one day
So nice to hear someone talk about this in-depth.
At 34:00, the Métabaron is clearly the inspiration for a certain starship captain portrayed by a Shakespearian actor…
The funny thing about the english translation is all the words are mashed together like "technopope" and "robcops". Its retro and cool
I confirm the Jodorowsky Dune documentary is worth watching :)
I read this in 2017. I was in my late 30's and it was my first real foray into graphic novels. I was such a fool having not started earlier!
I need to get that box set of Jodorowsky's books I saw it once in Portland Or looked cool.
Will I have ordered the collected edition of this before I finish watching the video? Probably!
5:25 Poor Jean Giraud, what spot to be in, haha!
Loved the commentary on this classic! Hopefully you guys get around to Metabarons eventually.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite comics
love how the sun eater looks both like a spider and a tick, symbolic design
I see The Fifth Element all over in this, such an influential work.
Jodo knows exactly what he's doing. No spagett!
40 years now... wow, talk about timeless! If these were just published now maybe experts in the field like you guys could look at them and be able to pick out when they were actually written.
its just so obvious Moebius loved linework and comics. a true master but so playful and so much expression as well.
And little did we know, they _were_ going to film this!
I’m writing this on 11/20/2021
One of the Dune books you describe in the documentary. The large one with all the art by Möbius went up on auction two weeks ago and the starting bid was 40k

John Defool's beginning in L'incal=the expanse's Josephus "Joe" Aloisus Miller
The Emperoress is the name of the ruler of humanity and pops up in the Metabarons several times too. Very fun idea, a lot easier on the eyes in this book than the Metabarons...
29:59 That drawing of the dog-faced, Kill Wolf-head, really reminds me of Richard Corben's Rolf.

Epic got a lot of my spare cash back in the 1980s. The production on Akira was so cool; especially where the spines all match, except for the issue where the second Akira event occurs.
There was a digitally-colored edition.
I can see how this inspired Akira.
Love to see some Jodo on this channel. You’re really butchering all the names but it’s all good 😂
Ol' Joe Dorowsky
I am cringing in pain watching this dude just ham-handedly maul the pages.
Loving this deep dive
j'adore moebius.
Comparing a lot of what I see here to my 2016 edition. The text is all changed and I don’t know if should be p.o.’d or not. The version you guys have seems like it has more charm in the lettering and translation.
I experience sleep paralysis, it can be scary, the worst is when it's happening while you're trying to fall asleep
please record a rewatch with Geof. Thanks for your Inspiration. It means a lot to me.
great video! do a Hermetic Garage please
Welp... i got purchased the first 3 of these on ebay. Thanks Kayfabe.
beatiful artwork, moebius was a genius. is really cool see how his art is going trough a kind of reinassance. i hope this bring a more critical light in the work of jodorowski, cause this is not the best script of him.
I hope you do Liberatore soon. I love his coloring style too
love this comic!

Someone or a publisher must buy the storyboard of Jodorowsky's Dune from Alejandro Jodorowsky and make a graphic novel
Hope you guys do Metabarons one day.
Looks awesome 👌
Holy fuck is that funny @15:48-16:00 - HAHAHAHAHAHAH
...!!!
Thought I might skip this video cause I didn't know the title. But METABARONS??? Are you kidding me. That is a spin-off???
Those are not bergs!:)
I was looking at my spanish edition (basically the french edition at the time, but in spanish) while I was watching the video, and I noticed something was off. First I thought it was about color but then I realized... the edition shown in the video has glossy paper! That's a big WTF
watch jodorowsky period!
you're so right about making every panel interesting, eliminating/reducing talking head shots. we should hold ourselves to a standard of immersion and visual storytelling, not just for the sake of our readers but for our own sakes. because honestly drawing those dialogue/head panels aren't even fun, you can feel how un-stimulating they are and just want to move on
Dune. Incal es lo que jodorowsky no pudo hacer con Dune, todo lo que planeo para su adaptación de dune lo hizo en el incal
why were later version INCAL were so other coloured ?
next Yves Chaland, Moebius Wife worked on INCAL color in first edition in France and Epic
as Humanos wanted to publish in USA they got a serious problem
Yves Chaland had died in car crash in France and inherit issue and the bereaved wanted more money...
Humanos
Next to that the publisher thinking
the result was comic that treated by fans like nuklear Waste...
Moebius forever
