A superb story by a master storyteller. THE ALEPH by Borges postdates this story, which may [??] have influenced Borges [though I do not know if he ever read it]. If you like this Wells rendition, then I suspect the powerful Borges tale will also please you.
Kinda makes you think. In the modern quantum physics, they said an object's property can be either one or the other (complete opposite), it's only known after the fact of observation. If the Mars' property (of being inhabited) can be applied with the same theory, there's no objection to the possibility that during H.G. Wells' time Mars could very well be populated with their indigenous Martians and red weeds and such. Only after we made the observation directly to Mars, by sending rovers, did that property completely vanished and we're presented with a totally different reality of barren wasteland.
