Brings back some of my faith for the og fans, Exoddus gets pushed aside way too much. And souldstorm had a lot of un kept promises. Exoddus was a “bonus game” purely for the fact the second game was meant to be munch, not because the had to rush their already planned Abe sequel (Abe only)… can’t wait to see prt 2!

I gotta say I haven't played the remakes, but i'd have been happy if they just remade both withoutout upping the 2.5D stuff. I wish they actually kept pre-rendered backgrounds and just make them 4k. I still prefer the atmosphere in the originals compared to what I've seen on youtube.
Perfectly said, I have seen mods for the original games that clear up the sprites alot and they look great but tithe are still the original ones.

I do like Soulstorm's bad ending a lot. He doesn't trip from being the good old clumsy Mudokon that he is, he trips because he's focused on something else and is stressed from the situation and not saving enough people. We all tend to do worse when in tough times.
Hey man great review! I loved Oddysee and Exoddus growing up and just replaying them now. I only ever played about 20% of New 'n' Tasty and then stopped. I was aware Soulstorm was coming but didn't even know it had come out. Watching reviews and gameplay I think I'll steer clear... Keep it up!
in my opinion, the new plot "Abe isn't real, Molluck burned his own farm" in Soulstorm is one of the many reasons the story is inferior to Exoddus. In Exoddus, the antagonists are fully aware of Abe's existence and know the damage he could do, which actually progresses the story in some way

i theroised many things. first maybe everyone including the magog thought mullock was a traitor, because it was revealed by brewmaster and other gluks they believed that story. but i kept asking "then why are there anti chant orbs everywhere!? they oviously know the mud's capabilities and even the slig in the good ending mentions possession".
I actually thought there would be a plot twist where a "Deep State" did know what really happed at Rupture Farmsand wanted to lie to the public to prevent further rebellions
edit2* also the news was inconsisent aswell. some saying Abe died on rupture farms as a slave and other saying he never ever existed. but if you get the Bad Ending, they literally show a photograph of Abe in the form of a jigsaw with missing pieces. did they really know abe or was it just a design choice by the devs????
I thought the exact same thing, that they were trying to cover up the real story to prevent other Mudokons from trying to rise up and do the same thing.
A big problem with modern gaming is the aim to be more cinematic. Movies that you play are the opposite of what video games should be. Even if both story and gameplay are good, stories can only go so far to where they must either end or reboot.
The brew master went from crazy to poindexter and it does *not* fit him.
Nice vid : D I also find the story of Soulstorm to be a bit slow, no pay off and all set up. Bit of a shame. Also the Glukkons kind of suck. They have cool designs now but the promo art made it seem like uh oh Mullock got back up since they are all wearing black suits together but nope they all think Mullock is a liar. It is kind of interesting none of them believe in Abe but it makes it feel like there is no one after you especially since Abe would assume Mullock is dead after N'n'T. I think Mullock should have had his suit still coloured purple to make him stand out.
Also the promo art for Morguer called him the Baron of Necrum which made him sound scary. The ending is a little anti climatic too. I know the factory can't explode but they should have had the last level been the final assault from the security forces trying to stop you from leaving, like either make your way back out or go through an escape route as the last level would have been epic but instead Abe just is on the train no problem. Also the start of the game I think the first level, then the level you craft the cure and then Phat Station or some combination of levels should have been the only ones left in, too many levels to get going out of the starting area story wise.

If it weren't for videos like this I wouldn't have realized that Soulstorm is actually based on Exoddus. It looks so wildly different and the plot/presentation are so inept that it's almost impossible to tell. They really should've just done a straight up remake like New n' Tasty, eat least that would've had SOME merit. I don't know what Soulstorm is trying to be, it's just boring and devoid of so much personality that is present in the original.

This isn't fair though. Of course the original is gonna clear due to nostalgia.
Look at Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth... awesome games on their own but they don't even hold a candle to the original Final Fantasy 7 lol
One thing i really liked about soulstorm was they finally added female mudokons, its one thing ive been hoping to see (along with more females of anything) my main issue with the game tho is an odd one, lorne voices basically everyone and i think thats why i feel aslik didnt have his same personality. aslik in the original wasnt actually voiced by lorne (dont remember the actual VA but still) so it doesnt have the same tone, i do agree they shouldve intergrated the gluks into the story more but i think they want to do that for a future game so when we do get to possess glukkons it would be more impactful.
i will also admit i was disapointed with the radios, i was hoping there would be random news of anything else maybe some random side story of a group of sligs or something rebelling or even some mysterious character going around and clearing up stuff after abe i dunno just something to interest the player more.
Over all i did really enjoy soulstorm, i just miss some of the things from exoddus, like the wildlife, mudokon emotions and the soundtrack, really missed oppertunity to have remixed or remade music for some of the revisted locations, im also suprised they didnt create a few hub areas, only time we get that is in the sanctum which i wish was longer but was still fun.

The first two games looked beautiful and played beautifully.
The remakes look like cheap imitations and do not / will not hold up artistically or mechanically as time goes on.
I find New and Tasty ugly too look at , I felt all the praise was undeserving
Focusing on a direct comparison between the two games makes your criticism a bit shallow. It makes it feel like you're just running through a checklist of what is/isn't in the game, then when there is a comparison it often times feels as if you're comparing apples to oranges, especially when it comes to the structure of the story and character motivation (Exoddus spends almost no time in the second half giving Abe any character, and it spends much of the first half re-treading the Mudoken trials, but because of the structure of the video I feel like you don't give Soulstorm a fair shake here). There are chunks of good criticism here, and I like you pointing out the inactivity of the Glukkon villains (their wilful ignorance becomes a stretch too far by the end). I also like how you draw attention to the more subtle aspects of the art design that Soulstorm lacked for the most part, especially the little pieces of propaganda that try and paint the Glukkons as "Good Guy Employers" (Love Uncle Aslik the most).
Try and branch out to your own style a bit more, and be a bit more rigorous in your comparisons when you do make them (Don't be afraid to bash your favourite old games! Everything has flaws). You're doing well though!

The original games were lightning in a bottle, the remakes are soulless, no charm, masquerading as abe and oddworld games, they just aren't good. They should just have 4k versions of the originals and move on from abe because they won't ever capture the charm the originals had.
