I’ve been listening to it over and over again. I cry every time. I had bright eyes by Art Garfunkel at my son’s funeral but if I had heard this, it would have been this. He’s buried in a place called Green acre based in Epping Forest and watching your video just reminds me of him so much. It’s a wonderful song. Im going to search to find if you’ve done any others
Hi Samantha, thank you for your lovely comment, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply; I guess TH-cam send more notifications to those who are regularly active, and I hadn't see this until today. I'm very sorry for your loss; no parent should ever have to lose a child. I have played at quite a few funerals over the years, including some for close friends who passed way before their time, though only once was I asked for Looking for Space - usually it's my own song, Another Sunrise. Bright Eyes always gets me - it's a beautiful song, and a wonderful choice.
Thanks, Roger; it's a big sing for me...I played it at my best friend's funeral, and sunlight came streaming through the window and lit up his daughter...amazing...
First of all, my guitar is tuned down 1 full tone; this just works with my vocal range for this song. So, when I identify chords, I'm telling you the shape of the chord to play, thus C would actually be a Bb, but you will play a C shape. My (Thumb Index Middle Ring) picking pattern is TIRM, TIMR, TIRM, TIMR for the verse (C EM F G), and the strings I strike for these chords are: 5312, 6432, 4312, 6432. Thanks for your kind comments - I think John is around wherever his songs are played :-)
What a lovely voice. Almost as good as John but really heart felt. I like the accompanying video too.thanks for posting it’s simple but resonates with truth.
Thank you! Yes I am still performing - this is what I do for a living. Principally I am a country music artist, with 300+ of my own songs. I really appreciate your kind comments 🙏
You are such a gifted guy! I am sure John is listening and quite pleased with your gift. You sound just like him. I got chills as well! Hope you continue your love for nature and beautiful music in this world. I hope you have good friends that support you and protect you. You are a special person. This world needs more people like you. Keep up the great music! I will stay tuned!
Such a lovely performance, Mark. There is an Irish Balladeer tone to your voice. Repeating an earlier comment, it was played and sung with great feeling. Clearly this song means a lot to you and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you so much for posting.
Thank you, Scottie. One of my best times was in Ireland, where my original music was really well received; Iwant to go back there soon, but it's knowing where to start! Yes, I love Looking for Space, and playing it at my best friend's funeral was truly moving
I looks like your were in the Lake District....beautiful. I used to live in England near Cirencester. I now live in the Rocky Mountains of the United States and was fortunate enough to have met John Denver 5 months before his passing. It was after his concert in Cerritos, CA. The Golden Eagle that John had on his forearm on the cover of his Album Aerie, was a bird from Idaho, owned by a friend of John's named Morley Nelson, who, like John was a environmentalist and naturalist. Morley established the Snake River Birds of Prey Sanctuary here in Idaho. I did a painting of that Eagle, whose name was "Fagin" like the character in Dicken's Oliver Twist. You have a beautiful voice and I'm sure John was enjoying you keeping his beautiful music alive....
How lucky are you to have met John. You painted that eagle? WOW! Yes, this was a trip to the Lake District with some friends many years ago. The lake in the video is Crummock Water, and then you can see Honister Pass. England's last eagle spent his final years not far from there, in Riggindale; I was lucky enough to see him twice.
Hi Mark, I'm a big fan and enjoy this time more each time. I was so happy to see a picture of you enjoying the view and the water in you're version of Wiklow Mountain High in the UK ! Thanks for helping to keep this music alive ! I believe this is one of John's spiritual gems as I read that he attended the Werner Erhard EST Training back in the 70's. Best, LA Guy
Thank you for the nice comments; though I saw him play several times, I never got to meet John but his music definitely made me pick up the guitar and write songs. I only got to Aspen after his death, though it had long been my wish to go there. This is perhaps my own favourite of his to sing - I love the power of the vocals and the message of this song.
Thanks for your nice comment; it's a timeless song, still as relevant today as when John wrote it, and so many people feel it seemed like it was written for their life story. It just goes to show (as John said) that we're not so different from each other.
Mark..Wow! Came across you looking for chords for this song. What an extreme surprise. John was one of kind, somebody I grew up hearing my mom play his music, to which I fell in love with his music. You my friend, have woken this song back up for me, you do an absolutely amazing job of it. Keep posting and sharing and thanks for making my morning on this dreary Canadian day.
Hey this is beautiful man. What a lovely and great vocal and guitar performance. Keeping the memory and spirit of our Dear John Denver alive. he said we all should seek that 'space' and should enjoy and preserve it for our kids and their kids etc. You found and appreciate it where you live and so do I here in Dublin with the Wicklow hills on my back door. John Denver is part responsible for my appreciation of my surrroundings in a big way..Again, great pipes and guitar work. I loved this!
Thank you!! Sounds great!! I always get jealous of people that sing John Denver Songs, to high for me to even attempt, but I do wish I had a voice for it. Thanks for the video!!
Hi Shyann Thanks so much for your nice comments on this and a couple of my other recordings. The guitar is a Lepore, which I believe is made in the far East, though I'm not sure of its history; I bought it from a collector in Germany. It's an all solid instrument, with a Flamed Maple Body & Sitka Spruce top. The inlays are awesome - the back has a large image of a female archer, sitting on a crescent moon, surrounded by stars. It sounds pretty good, too, which I guess is what really matters :-)
I think that's a tough one to play and to sing. you did both amazingly. this song sums up where I am in my life at the moment and you nailed everything, including the underlying emotion. I owe you a beer, simply top class x thank you x
Thanks for your really nice comments. I can tell you it was never tougher than when I played it at my best friend's funeral. It was an overcast day, but during the song, a shaft of clear sunlight shone through the church window right onto his daughter's face...we are never truly alone. I hope you find the space you're looking for.
Hi Mark, in 10 days it will be 10 years on for this great video. I had to come back again and enjoy again. I hope this comment finds you well ! Best, GetSmartPaul :)
Thanks, Paul, for remininding me I'm getting old! My journey continues, though ill health has put a dent in what I can do these days; I hope life is being kind to you, my friend 😊
Hi Mark, we both are ! 😊 yes, the journey gets more difficult but let the music sooth the way. BTW, the video shot of you overlooking the lake is so appropriate for this song. Best, GetSmartPaul
wow that is so true. You said it exactly right, like our dear John himself indeed did say it. Do you have more of his songs on TH-cam? Would be lovely to hear them too.
I have quite a few, Olga! If you go into my channel from the page you commented on, you'll find them. Some are a bit grainy (concert footage) e.g. Yellowstone, but the sound is just as clear.
Hi Mark, Yep, you're sure are a gifted musician singer, songwriter :) This special song means a lot to us JD fans like you said. Thanks for an inspiring video with your version of "Rocky Mountain High" and for living the spirit of the song. Best to u ! LA Guy
