I am so enjoying listening to this book. I read it ages ago. There is something in the structure of the language, in the descriptions in the pace that is captivating and enduring. Thank you guys for making his story available to listen to.
A phrase used at 2:53 made me do a little research. Here is what Wikipedia had to say: "Some people mistakenly believe that a corrupted version of "Baumes law" was the origin for the idiom "bum's rush". However, this phrase was in common use before the passage of the Baumes law, and it is derived from the practice of evicting tramps or vagrants from bars and other public places. Dashiell Hammett's 1929 novel The Maltese Falcon has a bit of dialogue referring to "Baumes rush" in reference to a hoodlum who had left New York for San Francisco, the implication being that he had been chased out by the police, so perhaps the "Baumes" variant was back-fit to the existing one given the assonance of the name."
It struck me in the beginning that the way Hammett describes Spade is much more reminiscent of Lee Van Cleef than Bogart. It's a shame Van Cleef never appeared as Sam Spade in anything. His face is a match to the description, while the blond hair and cat-like eyes could have been handled cosmetically and prosthetically (contact lenses of the right color).
Are you referring to when the narrator mentions "Effie Perine's typewriter"? If so, I think the narrator is just referring to the name "Effie," not "F-ing." Unless Hammett chose the name "Effie" as an intentional pun to prompt us to think about Effie in a certain way?
Ophir Falk, the gold of Ophir. Falk the falcon, The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. So, more ham and Malta. There are alot of Maltese falcon statues, it may be Rome, the SS was based upon the Roman legions supposedly. It may be Assyrian. It's a very old symbol, the golden falcon, the Maltese falcon. Thanks for this. one of my favorite authors, one of my favorite books, one of my favorite movies, now one of my favorite audiobooks
Spot on narration! I thoroughly enjoy this from start to finish!
Every time there's a scene with Sam and Effie in his office, I am reminded of a certain Edward Hopper painting.
The way the "F-bomb" is dropped at around 2:55 is very creative.

If you're doing this as a hobby, keep going. Phenomenal job!
This reader is amazing!
This narrator’s Peter Lorre voice is only excelled by his Sidney Greenstreet ! And he chose wisely in not attempting Humphrey Bogart.
😮 the narrator really got Peter Lorre's voice down pat 👏👏👏
A great reading. I have it bookmarked for my film studies class.
One of my favorite Dashel Hammett's books
Brilliant - THANK YOU 🙏🏽

Why is the name of the narrator not listed? Am I missing it? Extraordinary job.
Very, very well narrated…
Excellent! classic Detective novel.
Spade's no simp.
Thanks for this!!!!
Welcome, Ian. :)
Great story by a great author
Normally I don't like assigned readings, but this was actually really good. Spape is a really interesting character.
Wow, that was pretty good.
10/10 narration, 10/10 writing...but MAN, Spade really is kind of a dick, especially compared to Marlow.
Truly an artiste
May I inquire the narrator ?
Not sure, but I think it's William Dufris.

I like how skeptical the cops are of Spade, as he shows absolutely no emotional interest in the fact that his partner was murdered.
Gutman sounds like Pete off of Mickey Mouse😂 this is awesome though!
Brilliant reader. Who is it?
i was also trying to find that out!
Honestly, Tom Polhaus is my favourite character. He just wants to do his job and for Spqde to stop being an ass all the time.

I think the narrator may be the great Bill Dufris
who is the narrator??
chapter 6 = 1:33:23
Joel Cairo is hilarious, the voice makes me think of a more comical Peter Lorre.

The novel is slow, slow, slow. I'm sticking it out only because the narrator is so skilled that it's a pleasure to hear him do the voices.
Sam Spade really has no redeeming qualities, does he?

The narration was good, a bit to ostentatious at times but adequate nonetheless.
