Thanks for sharing.......I need to replace the rack in my 89 325i. I have a 00 Z3 rack from the salvage yard. Is it over kill for Daily Driver? I was just thinking of the purple tag e46 rack. I believe it is 2.7 vs 3.0. I say that because I could sell the Z3 rack and used the cash toward a reman. e46. What are Z3 racks going for? The car runs good with the stock M20. I plan on keeping the car and when engine goes put an M54B30 and still use it as a DD. Thanks for the feed back. BTW on some of the forums I have read, the steering knuckle needs to ground down (dremel) in a couple spots with the adapt kit to make it smooth.
Do in need the spacers to shorten the steering coppler or can i leave it stock? I only want to swap the z3 rack with the spacers for the subframe... is it possible or is it really necessary?
Am i missing something here? Isn't the steering shaft clamp supposed to be seated on the splines? They aren't there for just looks they are there so you are not relying on just the clamp pressure alone
Excellent video. Funny that you actually used to own that E30.. Did you delete the steering giubo? I've been thinking of doing that to my Z3 and replacing it with an aluminum bit to remove the steering play I've been dealing with for a while
nah, I left it since it wasn't my car -- typically I modify two RWD E46 steering shafts when I do a rack swap. easier I feel. chances are if you've got play, it's not in that little guibo.
Hmm. I'll get under the car tomorrow and inspect it. the play can sometimes get scary as the roads here are terrible and my car tramlines like crazy sometimes. Thanks for the advice :)

So does the cooling return pipe not matter if it's just hose no pipe?

Z3 and E36 standard racks have the same fitment. snout angle is a little different but doesnt much matter

Ah, shame. I've inspected my control arms and bushings and they seem fine, thats why i thought it was the giubo.
check rack to subframe bolts, otherwise your play is in the steering shaft or rack. thats my money.
