  • In 1923, the franchise for what is today the Sacramento Kings was founded in Rochester, New York as the Rochester Royals. The franchise would move to Cincinnati (1957) and Kansas City/Omaha (1972) before they found their home in Sacramento as the Kings in 1985.
The Sacramento Kings celebrated 100 Years of Royalty on December 2nd at their home game at the Golden 1 Center against the Denver Nuggets. In the lead up to the game, the Kings teamed up with Jared and Howard at the Sacramento History Museum to print a special commemorative print recognizing the important cities and colors from Kings history. The artwork for the photo engraving was created by Kings staff and the cut for us to print was engraved by the OWOSSO Engraving Company.
For this press run, a royal blue rubber base ink was used to print 100 prints that accompanied the first 100 City Edition jerseys that were sold at the December 2nd game.
In this video, Howard shows inking of the press and printing copies recorded from different angles. These were printed using our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press.

I love how he knew that exact moment it would be covered! I didn’t even know from watching, but the moment he finished walking around it was fully covered in ink!!

That colour blue is so pretty! Thank you for keeping these machines going.
Also, the sound of the flywheel is something Venjent would love.
    Best,
    Luis

This machine looks like it breaks every safety rule today and give it a chance will willingly gobble your body parts up into it given that chance

but it's quite fine when you know what your're doing, are familliar with the machine and bring some attention to work. Working "by hand" is so much nicer than sitting in front of a screen all day

I was watching some folk operate a old printing press in Pretoria SouthAfrica . That thing had a swinging arm of sorts placing the media... Well it could take out you jaw bone if you were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Love seeing this press so beautifully worked by Howard!

When I was a kid back in the '50s and early '60s, my grandfather had three or four presses like that in Pensacola, Fl. The video brings back memories.

Why does that work with so little ink? Is it because it warms up as it’s rolled and spreads easier? Plus that color is awesome. But orange is my favorite. And also, how many prints can you make with that much ink? 100?

Because not that much ink is needed! A dab of ink was added after 30-40 prints.

I grew up with this machine in my father printing shop. It was driven by a huge electric motor with a 10 in wide leather belt. I used to run my matchbox cars on it and also the metal drive wheel. Printed many Christmas cards. Pretty sure I fell asleep while the machine was running as well as a young baby.

In junior high school we printed with such a machine, again driven by an electric motor. Print shop!

If I lived in California, I would LOVE to operate this machine. I already own and use graphotype machines from WWI and WWII. 🥰

I used to see this printing press in operation at my dad’s printing press business. I have all the due respect for this vintage technology and the machine operators.
However, I find a little less ergonomic and inefficient arrangement of paper stack in this video… the machine operators for my father’s printing press used to keep the unprinted stack of paper on the tray in the middle, pick up one sheet by left hand from the top left corner, place it on the press table with a sweeping hand until it hits the guide pins. And then, once printing is done, the paper is pulled out with right hand from right bottom corner and swept out and placed on the side tray.

it will never stop confusing me, how far such a seemingly small amount of ink can be stretched

That's not a small amount of ink, it's hissing quite loudly.
