  • Full story: is.gd/OZ63NQ -- Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine have identified the ability of the heart to produce and store nitric oxide as an important way in which exercise protects the heart from injury.
    Introduction
Exercise both reduces the risk of a heart attack and protects the heart from injury if a heart attack does occur. For years, doctors have been trying to dissect how this second benefit of exercise works, with the aim of finding ways to protect the heart after a heart attack.

Hi, I am confused because I thought Nitrites and Nitrates (found in processed meats etc) were toxic but now I am hearing from several sources that Nitrites and Nitrates convert to Nitric Oxide which is important in protecting the heart, brain, high blood pressure and kill off viruses.

Nitrates can react with meat in a way that creates carcinogens, I believe. However, if you eat nitrate rich foods or nitrate supplements, these do not have any meat to react with. Therefore, when consumed without meat, nitrates are healthy.

Heather, nitrates act as a preservative and inhibit bacterial growth thereby prolonging the shelf life of the meat. Once eaten the nitrates may continue to act as free radicals and kill and inhibit bacteria that are inside your intestines, particularly your colon. In extreme, such as eating lots of nitrate processed meats, this has been shown as a correlation to higher levels of cancer. It is my understanding that cancer arises from damaged mitochondria. So a disordered biome with one cause being excessive consumption of nitrates could create imbalance and play a part in certain localised cancers. Remember the intestines and lumen of the bowel is seen as outside the body. Nitric oxide is a short lived gas that is also a free radical and is intracellularly balanced by glutathione, while bacteria don’t use glutathione. So it acts as a bactericide and seems to control viruses and parasites as well. Internal use of NO is used to dilate our blood vessels and in many other regulatory functions including as an important neurotransmitter in the brain. Lots to discover as yet.

As I just watched on another podcast.. the Dr. on that one said that yes, nitrites exist in meat, but very little. He continued, some of the animals eat plants , so that’s how it’s transferred to us via meat.
