Splendid footage of the Dutch Army during WW1 in 1917 in color! Part-1 [A.I. enhanced & colorized]

- In 1916, cinema operator Willy Mullens from The Hague was commissioned by the Ministry of War to make a film to prove that the Dutch armed forces were ready to defend the neutrality of the country. The film also had to promote the appreciation of the population for the armed forces. Mullens and his cameramen depicted the most diverse activities of the army and navy. After WW-I, during the Interbellum, he became well known as ‘filmer of the fatherland", but his popularity deminished with the rise of competitor Polygoon, who provided film reels to nearly all the Dutch cinemas from 1924 onwards.
The Leger en Vloot film was commissioned by the Dutch government to make it clear to other countries that Dutch neutrality was not to be trifled with. In that respect it is important to note that this film should be viewed from a historic perspective and not judged through todays eyes.
What can be concluded is that the weapons and other equipment that were at the disposal of the Dutch army were very basic during WW-1.
For example machine guns were transported by dog drawn carts and huge numbers of soldiers used bikes as their means of transportation.
Besides rudimentary early radio equipment, carrier pidgeons were still being used to send messages.
In 1917 this film attracted a lot of attention. Queen Wilhelmina and her husband Prince Hendrik were present at its première on the 9th of January 1917. The Queen also makes an appearance in this film as she inspects an army excersize riding side saddle on her horse. Plenty of dogs and horses play a role in this scene.
Outside of Holland this "Leger en Vloot" film was shown among other to British and German viewers under the title "Holland Neutral".
The film, of course, contained only those activities of the Army and Navy which the High Command was willing to show, and to do so in the most favorable manner possible. So no numb conscripts in the mud. At the end of the film there is a scene in which soldiers were pulled along the steel wire across a river at a rather perilous speed. It has an element of ludacrouscy, even when not viewed from a modern point of view. It also shows how a tree is felled by means of a machine gun.
While watching this film, here is some more information about the Netherlands during WW-I:
On July 31, 1914, general mobilization was decided. The Netherlands was the first non-belligerent country to take this measure and would be the only neutral state to remain fully mobilized throughout the war. In total, about 200,000, rising to almost 400,000 men in the age groups of 20 to 29 years were called up. Many were married and were running their business before being conscripted.
At the beginning of August 1914, the battle broke out. The Germans invaded Luxembourg and Belgium. Leuven was set on fire and on 10 October 1914 Antwerp also fell into German hands.
Of a total population of six million, one million Belgian civilians and soldiers fled to the Netherlands. The reception of the huge refugee flow went well. Local committees and individuals spontaneously offered accommodation and assistance.
During the war years, the army was involved in border control, the reception of refugees and interned soldiers and the fight against smuggling and espionage.
The Navy focused on the defense of the Dutch East Indies, patrols the Dutch coast and the clearing of mines at sea. But in the absence of real acts of war, boredom frequently set inamong the troops. Boredom was prevented by sports competitions and education. As the war progressed, the soldiers also received more leave to visit their wives and
to visit relatives and return to their farms and fields.

Wow thanks for uploading this. I'm loving the beginning part showing the Verbindingstroepen. I was in the Royal Signals myself and can relate to a lot of what they are doing, including climbing on the top of the vehicle (Forward control Landrovers) to drop the poles we had to prop up the cam nets, which we unrolled from the top of the vehicle too. Great stuff!

Fortunately for the Netherlands, Germany respected its neutrality all throughout WWI and never invaded in order to sweep around the Allies' lines in Belgium and northern France -- the von Schlieffen Plan. WWII was a different story of course.
Germany decuded not to invade, because of the Dutch ability to flood strategic areas, allowing Germany no way to reach the big cities in the west, like Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In WW2, they solved this problem by parachuting soldiers in and a heavy bombardment of Rotterdam.

The Netherlands remained neutral during World War I, a stance that arose partly from a strict policy of neutrality in international affairs that started in 1830, with the secession of Belgium from the Netherlands. Dutch neutrality was not guaranteed by the major powers in Europe and was not part of the Dutch constitution. The country's neutrality was based on the belief that its strategic position between the German Empire, German-occupied Belgium, and the British guaranteed its safety.[1]
The Royal Netherlands Army was mobilized throughout the conflict, as belligerents regularly attempted to intimidate the Netherlands and to place demands on it. In addition to providing a credible deterrence, the army had to house refugees, guard internment camps for captured soldiers, and prevent smuggling.
The government also restricted the free movement of people, monitored spies, and took other wartime measures.

Tip: read "Frank van Wezels roemruchte jaren" by A.M. de Jong, a novel about a school teacher from Amsterdam who is mobilised during WW1. This video shows how Frank and his fellow soldiers must have looked. Theo Thijssen, another Dutch author, also wrote extensively about his WW1 mobilisation experiences, though not in one novel, but in various short stories and letters.
I respect these men and women, thinking of the pure Dutch without war era or with.
As I feel this nation was the first who became to build the ordinary man's rights and working together for a better future.
Everything started with the people who tried to fill up swamps and build a flourishing country.
These were not simple things.

Amazing. I noticed in films and tv shows that dealt with WW1 era. Many men signed up and wanted to fight? Like it was a duty or sign of manhood to join the war. If you didnt join. You were looked down upon or a sign of weakness? Not sure if thats a hollywood attitude. I personally would be terrified.

The equipment armaments and methods used by the Dutch army during the 1914-18 emergency were on a par with those of the Allies and of the Central powers - all of whom used dogs, horses and carrier pidgeons at that time.
A brave carrier pigeon by the name of Speckled Jim comes to mind, may he RIP.

I believe that the French still has a carrier pigeon "garrison", is case the birds are needed for the armed forces. Needless to say that a lot of other businesses are still using carrier pigeons. Again a top presentation Rick.

Rick i cannot imagine there was ever live film from WW1, as no cameraman would have survived the onslaught. Of course your WW1 filming and voiceovers is absolutely brillaint, but all live action would have been reinacted. Having said that, i believe to have read somewhere that an American had showed live action in a cinema, and everyone left after a short time, due to the butchery and terrible bloodshead. I love watching this coloured film from WW1 but dont need to see the butchery. The uniform colours is quite remarkable, and the buildings shown in this film are brilliant
It seems you didn't listen careful to my commentary. Please watch and listen again. The Netherlands were NEUTRAL during WW-I so no danger to any cameraman whatsoever! None of what you see is "live action". It are all exercizes to keep the Dutch army on its toes in preparation for a possible ignorence/violation by Germany of the Dutch neutrality status. You might be right that some scenes were done to favour the film. Also I never include "butchery" in any of my videos because it could get me banned on TH-cam. There is a scene in the film in which a lifelike dummy soldier gets blown up, but I deliberately omitted that.

Of course i know the Netherlands along with other countries remained neutral. i was making a general point, that your filming of WW1 is brilliant, but of course no cameraman could possibly film live action. I understand. Indeed there is very little actual combat footage of WW-I. It was certainly too dangerous for the camera teams. TH-cam is normally in english, so my comment would have been understood as a general comment, and never in a million years detrimental to anything or anybody. As you say cameramen were more atone to taking risks in WW2 especially the americans on D day and in the pacific. WW1 would have been out of the question due to obvious reasons. So the Dutch had few cars, used dogs and pigeons and had no tanks, but they had so many machine guns that a surplus was used in forestry?? Impressive.

Germany at this time was in no position to invade and had no interest to attack the Netherlands. I'm sure the dutch army soldiers had their kaas and drop rations.

The Dutch military was always kept on a tight budget. Periods of build up during threat and negligence during safety. The equipment and tactics you see here were largely the same when we tried to fight the Germans in WW2. Poor fellows were overrun by well trained fast moving teams armed to the teeth. Today we see the same proces a stripped defense force, leasing tanks from the Germans as we sold all of them. Abolished military service. A defense force is like an insurance, you pay for years and years for maybe one house fire in 60 years.
Interesting footage. However, the subtitles need some work! E.g., in the context of the story, it’s “the war broke out,” not “the battle broke out”(a battle is a localized conflict and is smaller in scope than a war); it’s “artillery,” not “artilliary”; it’s “railway tracks,” not “railway line”; it’s the “Hussars Regiment,” not the “Huzaren corps”; it’s “horseback,” not “horse back”; it’s “rescued,” not “resqued”; it’s “exercises,” not “exercizes”; it’s “along a railway track,” not “besides a railway line”; it’s “riflemen,” not “rifle men”; etc.

I never knew dogs were used to haul machine guns and ammunition chests. I wonder what rank they held. The footage at 30:00 of the soldier slamming into the tree was hilarious. Interesting that the Netherlands managed to remain neutral in WW1 but not in WW2. I wonder what changed.

In WW1 the Germans had little interest in invading the Netherlands. In WW2 they had, one of the reasons was the use of Dutch airfields. Before WW1 the Germans thought about invading the Netherlands, especially for using the Dutch province of Zuid Limburg for the passage of their right wing as part of the Shlieffen plan. They did not and had to attack the Liege fortresses and squeeze their right wing through the small corridor around Liège,
The Belgians used dogs too for transporting their machine guns, they were rather efficient. As for bycicles, a soldier on a bike moves faster then on foot. Even in WW2 the Germans used bycicle units since most of the infantry had to walk.

The Germans feared an allied invasion via Holland and build a vast line of bunkers at the Dutch Belgian border in 1917. Most of these concrete fortifications are still in place and are a constant nuisance to traffic and agriculture.
In World War I, Germany was suddenly faced with a multi-front war it had not chosen for itself. The Netherlands was not a threat and therefore was not invaded, also because it did provide the Germans with an alternative route into France, which Belgium did provide. That was why Belgium was invaded. In World War II, the Germans instigated the war themselves and sought to conquer as much territory as possible for the Reich. That's the difference.

What a rediculous stance. Wilhelm II was as guilty as the rest of them, not particularly good nor evil in that regard. The Dutch position of neutrality was completely understandable, they had nothing to gain from either France or Germany winning the war, and had suffered incursions by these empires in the past.
I wonder if it is still the same now as it was after the Nazi's rolled into Holland if the majority of Dutch were as ardent supporters as I have heard from the people who's family were decimated by the fervent hatred of Jews among the rabble?

WW-II was more than 3 generations ago, not a single mature person left who was alive then. The Nazi's were overthrown and Germany now is a decent country. Yes the Dutch and Germans are now good neighbours.

That's a modernistic outlook on footage from over 100 years ago. This was the age in which cars were in their infancy. The only traction to drive things around only 10 years prior to this footage was by either animals or by rail, which isnt able to provide things where and when you need them. I take it you are also against using animals on farms?
