    Great video. I personally own and use many of these old 8mm units and love them. All still fully working and the joy of owning a camera again that I remember buying new back in 1999 is awesome fun. Very informative video for people and you should definitely use it more on the odd video or two as these old units deserve to keep going! Subscribed! 👍

    Hi Griffin …I came across this film called…computer chess by Andrew bujalski….they used a Sony AVC-3260….and that film has been playing in theatres….don’t know how did they upped the resolution…also there was a film called Festen released in 1999 in Germany…they used a Sony DCR-PC3..I don’t know and can’t seem to find any source as to how did they got the print for a film theatre….maybe they just used a telecine to print the output on a real 35 mm celluloid roll…like they used to in the 1940s at the beginning of TV….I would like to shoot a short film too with a VHS vibe….with real VHS equipment..
    But how do I get it into a film theatre…can you please help…..

    At university, we used the Sony DSR-PD150. I remember the tape deck just to get your footage from the tape to the computer was more expensive than most modern cameras. I did the same trick for shallow depth of field. We did have some manual controls on that one though, thankfully.

    I had this camera. My in-laws got it for us when we moved away when I joined the Navy. It was a great camera with lots of features. Fun fact about that night vision, it could be used to “see through cloths”. Look it up, I think you need a IR filter or a piece of film.

    I have an old sony model very similar to yours. It has a firewire 400 connector that used to connect to my old mac, no longer. So I order a cable from China that has a USB cable. When I connected to my Mac, though, neither FCPX nor iMovie seem to identify the camera... oops! How did you manage?

    • @GriffinHammond
      @GriffinHammond  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan, I have an answer for you in our latest episode: th-cam.com/video/y-yd4ricthg/w-d-xo.html
      Nick pointed out that although your Mac ports look like USB-C, they're actually Thunderbolt 3. So you may need the official Apple Thunderbolt adapters that I'm using, rather than a third-party adapter made for USB-C.
      I use three adapters: a Belkin adapter that gets me from Firewire 400 to 800. Then an Apple adapter from Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2. Then a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. That works for me in FCPX.

    If I ever need to get footage off of my old MiniDV tapes I'm going to need a setup like yours. I'm working on a 2017 iMac. I used to have a Mid-2010 Mac Pro until it clonked out early last year. Still, I'm glad I don't have to deal with TAPES anymore! Man Alive, was that just a hassle! Good thing I got my one MiniDV feature film all finished and released two months before the Mac Pro died. For the record, I used to use a Sony DCR-VX2100 which was pretty unremarkable, but at least shot in widescreen.

      Are you talking about normal USB? Sadly it can’t be done from one to the other directly. With a IMac or a modern laptop USB-C can adapt with adapters like is done in this video. But yes normal USB is too slow and that’s why FireWire became the answer as it had a much faster throughput.

    I love that your kid will be able to look back and see your progression through filmmaking, and then being able to see this and see you reflecting back on your own growth - is that meta? Kinda wanna dig my Sony Handycam out now. I bought it for a holiday trip to India and was going to make a short documentary/vlog but never did (still got the footage somewhere though). Digital tape was kinda phasing out then and solid state (mainly SD card) storage cameras were on the up. I remember taking forever to decide which to buy and, after buying it, wished I'd gone for the latter (these Handycams were much bulkier by comparison) but, as you've shown, these cameras had options that the SD card cameras didn't, such as 20 to 30x optical zoom and infra-red (i found these quite handy). Now we can do lots more with our phones and, unless looking for that professional style, don't really need to take cameras with us. I wonder what camera tech will be availble to your son when he's 16?
