  • It was Christmas 2016 and my friend, knowing I like aeroplanes, gave me a balsa wood kit of an Me109 for my present. What on earth was I going to do with that? It sat unopened for nearly two years till, one day, I decided to have a go at building it...
    It took me about 50 hours and was much more work than I had anticipated. Little did I know that this humble model would re-ignite my childhood passion for this long-forgotten hobby.

    That was just great! You put the soundtrack in my head on the video. It's wonderful being a kid.

      I still recall watching the film at the Odeon in Streatham as a kid when it came out back in the sixties. I watched it again the other day, and it still holds up.

      david lasich Many thanks, yes, it’s a beautiful place to fly... till your pride and joy gets stuck in a tree or thorny hedgerow. Nature doesn’t take any prisoners here!

      I'm just turned sixty two & revisiting this hobby since childhood....., somewhat more patient now I'm older & still at the learning stage....., oh my word, how quickly those years went by but I hope to have fun with this hobby. Best wishes & good luck to you..., enjoy. 😉

      adarsh lakshman Thanks for your kind comments. Regrettably, it hasn’t been continued.. yet. I have never been able to get the Hurricane to fly under power.🤬 However, if you check out my other videos, you can see this Me109 being rebuilt as that of Franz Stigler, and flown again. Annoyingly, it broke a wing on the first flight this year, so it’ll have to wait for another repair and next Spring for an attempt at breaking a minute flight.

    Hi Crashrr, Fabulous model, it flies really well, mate! I have built a VMC Spitfire and it flies good, but not as good as yours... Is that the 18" wingspan? How much does it weigh? What rubber motor are you using? How many turns? My Spit weighs 34 grams and I have tried several different motors. My longest flight was about 10 seconds. I am currently testing a 4 strand 1/8" braided motor with 125 turns. It only flies for about 5 seconds, but she reaches over 40 MPH.

      Hi Tim, I’ll get back to on this - gotta busy day, here. Watch my other Me109 video, same crate rebuilt much lighter!

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tim, yes, this is the VMC 18” span 109, though much lightened compared to its first incarnation. It weighs 30g, and has a ⅛” x 64” motor braided into two loops with 200 forward turns (peg length is 5¼”. My friend gave me a VMC Spitfire which he built (32g) and which I have struggled to keep airborne for five seconds! Spits are tricky! I’ve taken a small warp out of the wing, and will try again, though because I didn’t build it, I won’t spend much time on it. The best resource that I can recommend - and where I learnt everything I know - are the videos on TH-cam by Maxfliart. Just keep watching them, and reading the comments. Good luck. High wing aeroplanes are much easier to get flying!

    Hi Justin intersted in building the Me 109 from Vintage Model Co can you tell me from your first hand experiencer, was this a fairly easy kit to put to gather and trim to fly have you since gotten good flight time . Any help appreciated David

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David kelly Hi David, this is the first kit I have built for 45 years and, compared to the old kits of my childhood, this one - with its laser cut parts and computer-aided design - was a joy to make. I followed the instructions and, apart from one bit (afraid I can't remember which bit) it was easy to understand and build. That said, it still took me a long time because I wanted to do a good job - I was competing against a friend with a Spitfire! Be assured, this a good kit and, if built light and straight, it will fly. However, as you can see from my video, it took me a good while and many crashes before I got the 109 to fly well. I had to rebuild broken wings many times, though I was flying over short grass which didn't help. The main reason for this was that my wings were warped and not set exactly square to each other, so I had some major trimming issues to overcome, and this was the first model I have ever got to fly!
      I have just stripped it back completely, built new wings, cut out all the unnecessary stringers aft of the wing, rebuilt the fin and tailplane a gram lighter than the ones supplied, and removed most of the planking at the front. All this in an effort to make the whole plane lighter. (For every gram you save on the tail plane, you will save three in nose weight, i.e. 4 grams in total, that's 20% of the weight of the finished airframe!) So, build it light, cut out unnecessary weight from the tail, make sure your wings aren't warped and are set square to each other, and you will have a good plane. I can't wait to cover mine and get it back in the air, I want to beat that 26 second flight. Keep watching, I'll do a video of it when it's done. Good luck, and let me know if I can help any more..

      Hi Justin thanks for taking the time to answer questions this gives me a bit of over view of the kit Wow you had some warped parts in the kit? rework replace with straighter parts . I know the nature of balsa but this just depends on quality of wood . I did ask about there line of kits( Magnificence flying Machine) they have and they responding. Makes a nice Mantelpiece, if you want to fly it that is hole different story, isn't that the main objective here a working model? one that performer well. I know some are a bit of a challenge depending on wind and atmosphere but all should have a good ability to fly well in design and materials out of the box! provided you follow all instructions well in building .I like the idea of the Messerschmitt looks like a well balanced plane for free flight. If you want really good flyers in kits check out www.flyingacesclub.com link I think there are some good laser cut kit to build from the link David

      David kelly Hi David, The warps were completely the fault of my inexperienced building, nothing to do with the quality of the kit. One very experienced modeller reckoned the VMC Me109 was the best kit he had ever made! Check out this link of the VMC Me109 flying, th-cam.com/video/HF8Zfhd-p6A/w-d-xo.html.

      Ok under stand, when building it is all about very flat surface to build upon my apologies to the kit. I tend to get a bit carried away cabinet grade ply 3/8 with wood frame center joist I think is the way to go on building board or a real marble top David

    Hello nice job on the 109 like the paint scheme, what paint did you use and did it ad much weight any help appreciated David

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David kelly Hi David, the light grey and yellow were the supplied coloured tissue. Having water-shrunk it, I then painted the dark grey with a light wash of artists’ water-colour paint. The stripe camouflage was done with the same grey paint but applied more thickly. The black was done with permanent marker. (Beware if you use old school dope as this can make the black marker lines bleed.) There would be almost no added weight doing it this way.
      If you check out my later video, you can see how I rebuilt this model using sprayed camouflage. Good luck.

      @@crashrr2993 Wow rebuild that is intense !! looks great . I take in you air brushed on your stencil scheme then a light clear coat ?

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David kelly Cheers for the kind comments. I used white tissue pre-shrunk with alcohol on a frame, airbrushed it with light grey Humbrol enamel. I then sprayed the dark grey enamel of the wings and the white cross while still on the frame. Whereas with the fuselage, I sprayed the dark grey after covering it. Water-shrunk everything, and that was it.

    • @gofast1394
      @gofast1394 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice very detailed, comment ! they say you should always spray a light clear coat over the model to help protect it, and help to preserve so the tissue does not get to tight and crush the model over time .

    • @crashrr2993
      @crashrr2993  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David kelly I don’t use dope - it’s too heavy and causes warps - so my crates won’t suffer that problem.
      As far as I am aware, there are two types of dope: shrinking and non-shrinking - the latter may also be called Banana Oil. Shrinking dope never stops shrinking, so it will warp the light, delicate structures required for successful free-flight. For heavier, balsa-covered rc craft, it probably isn’t a problem. Some modellers mix the two and swear by the results. Horses fir courses!
