Thanks for these clear and easy to follow instructions, got it running right away! However, there are a few other things that I learned later: You can use one SDR if you set VCOs to 2, and set up the two VCO tabs like you did the two receiver profiles. It's not as good (calls out of the dongle's bandwidth get missed), but in a pinch it works for half the cost. Also, to get DSDPlus to hear VB Cable, I have to set VB Cable as the default recording device every time I restart the computer. Finally, when setting rank (priority) for talkgroups or receiver listening threshold, lower numbers = higher priority. Thanks again, great fun!
Thank you for this tutorial. I also have the "Hobbyist's Guide to the RTL-SDR" by Carl Laufer, and found that while the instructions in this guide/book are detailed, your tutorial is more in-line with my PC. The only variance, was that I had to install the Virtual Cable prior to DSDPlus, as the program would crash upon opening. No issues were noted after I installed the Virtual Cable, followed by DSDPlus - otherwise everything worked perfectly. I can now listen to trucked digital frequencies in the Atlanta area! Your tutorial is the most thorough walkthrough I have found. Thank you!
I found the first video in this series and immediately ordered my second RTL-SDR. It showed up, along with a couple different antennas I ordered, and within half an hour, I was receiving, decoding and listening to the two P25 Phase 1 simulcast systems in my area that they switched to a few years ago. Thanks for the detailed videos
Thank you! Just that piece of info fixed me. Set VR cable to default and BINGO! It works. Now to watch the rest and hopefully learn to improve the quality. Thank YOU !!!
my virtual cable pre-dates my sdr/dsd+ installs by several years, have used voicemeter for ages, this had a side effect that is probably what someone was cuing in on when they said make sure your vb cable and all that related stuff is on a fresh install / default settings, because the problem i just sorted out using your tutorial (been chasing it for a few days), was that Cable Output in the mixer for Speakers, wasn't muted.. so i was getting p25 digital hash in overtop of decoded audio. So if anyone runs into that, right click the volume icon go to the mixer for your speakers and drag the volume bar down to the bottom for Cable Output - i am almost certain this is a byproduct of "Listen to this device" being checked in the Cable Output preferences - which is desired for other piping. Thanks for the tutorial Steve it helped get my install ironed out
Thank you thank you!!! You're amazing! Im up and running and listening to my city live. Only annoying part is sometimes i listen to horrible scratching after a transmission
I’ve been rewatching this series religiously trying to figure out why I couldn’t hear anything when I open DSD+ and turns out I need a 2nd SDR. Back to Amazon I go.
Thank you Steve so much for these videos. I’m having an issue with the Unitrunker. My Scanner dongle is stuck on stopped and it has no status. Which should be ready or closed. My Fixed dongle is either running and ready or stopped and closed. Do you know how to fix it? Thank you again Steve. Clayton Cuba
Your instructionals are perfect. Very clear and easy to follow. In fact I've followed it no less than 5 times trying to set up Unitrunker. Everything else is ready to go. But every time I try to configure Unitrunker, as soon as I hit play/start, It disappears. Unitrunker just vanishes. I went back and checked everything. All looks fine. What am I missing, or is there possibly a problem with my download? I'm stumped. Have a fine laptop, Lenovo Y520, i7. Like new. I hope you're still out there and can shed some light here. SUBSCRIBED and LIKED!!
Hi Steve, I have unitrunker configured like you showed, but I'm not getting the window with health status. Nor is DSD receiving anything. Any suggestions?
i only have 1 dongle and have tried following all these settings and i do get a signal on the scope, But nothing but static and the health always stays at 0? anyone have any ideas on why this is? is this only possible with two receivers?
I am seeing "Ohio MARCS-IP: Multi-Agency Radio Communications" or "Fairfield County Sheriff (OH)" I guess it would be Fairfield sense I live there... I can't get the "Scanner" to work... it keeps telling me "could not open" I purchased that kit and I don't see how I can connect both of the RTL's with an antenna?
Nayel Abdullah sorry not sure why my phone replied so many times, unitrunker you need two I believe. There is another software out there that can do it with just one. I believe it’s over on the rtl-sdr forum
Thank you! Better then the webpage I was trying to use. Got it working but it's only following the control channel. I'm sure it'll work eventually. (Edit had to put frequencies in site window and it started tracking them! I'm so happy :)
I followed everything to the letter & double checked everything but my audio is a mix of proper sounding human voices & mostly robotic sounds. When I look at every seperate screen, they all work & show ppl keying up the mics to speak, but I get no sound or what I described. The event screen only shows communications for only 1 or 2 seconds, yet it shows the proper source IDs, talk group IDs & so on. Any ideas on my problem??
Do you need to an internet connection to use the software itself, because I’m trying to run this on a raspberry pie, which windows on pi does not offer internet, so I can download the software to my main pc and transfer them to the pi, but not have internet on the pi itself.
Help! :) At 11:07, you hit "PLAY" to run the SCANNER dongle, and you get a RUNNING status. I got "STOPPED" and "COULD NOT OPEN" status where yours says, RUNNING and the status line is blank. Any ideas? I followed your directions.... to...a...tee.
Thanks for the video series! I've learned a lot so far and I plan on continuing to watch the series. I do have a question though - on radioreference.com, the listed frequencies for my city are all in black and none are highlighted in red or blue. Is there a way to figure out which is the primary control frequency in SDR#? Or do I just test every single frequency in unitrunker until I find the right one?
Hi, what control channel could I use if it doesn´t shows in radioreference site? is there a way so can I see it in SDRSHARP? I saw in your other video the waterfall but I don´t now if I have to take the stronger signal (red pure) for control or if this represents the range of frecuencies used for the min frecuency. Thank you (Sorry my english isn´t perfect)

Hey, awesome vid! Dropped a like and a sub. Quick question: I already have one of these. Could I just use that one for “fixed” and not have a scanner if I only want to listen to one station? 73s Luke
I suppose it's possible. I have only done it the way I described in the video. But, I have a HackRF which has a very large bandwidth and could be used alone.
The problem that I'm having with my NooElec R820T is that Unitrunker is blocking the ability to start SDR#. So its almost as if SDR# had a slot that used one of the dongles, and Unitrunker also needs access to both dongles. So I have to choose between starting SDR# and Unitrunker. Does that make sense? How can I fix that?
I have a lot of trouble tuning (decoding) digital police transmissions with SDRSharp and DSD+. It works but only about 1% of the time does it seem to output any listenable audio. It's either silent, or the voice quality is very poor and R2D2-like and this is despite spending a lot of time tweaking settings. I don't really know what the cause of my trouble is. If I'm having this trouble with SDRSharp, will I likely have trouble with Unitrunker?
@@dalf01 The signals are coming in very strong. Hi Steve, I am unable to hear any audio after installation. I can see activity in the DSD plus source audio window but nothing from the speakers. Also there is no logging activity. I see the site info from the station I am trying to receive and it has detected all the channels. I have double checked inputs and outputs in both VCO's. ( *1 month ago when I was not mad* ) Hey Steve, Nice vids! But I need help. When I try to install unitrunker, the 2nd link thing doesn't show up to run unitrunker. Help?
Doesn't work for me. DSD starts fine, SDRSharp works perfectly, and I've been listening to police / fire for a week or so by "chasing" frequencies around, FM works great and I have a good antenna outside. I cannot for the life of me get Unitrunker to start. Just says "Could not open!". I've reinstalled this a dozen times, used older versions, ...nothing. I would guess that you just pair your BT earpiece to your BT speakers and it should work just as it does out of your BT speakers. I don't have them, so I am guessing. Hopefully someone else will chime in for you.
@@linuxuser1234 Ok, thanks man. Funny enough, I moved over from SDRTrunk after having problems with getting the individual talk groups to work properly and hoped to have more success with unitrunk. Back to SDRTrunk for me as well. lol

You can use 1 dongle as long as the dongle spreads the bandwidth range of the trunking stations. A HackRf has a much wider bandwidth, but you can get two of the RTL-SDR's for much less.

it will not work with SDR#. SDR# is just a stepping stone to help you get started and get everything set up. use Unitrunker, DSD+ Plus, & Virtual Cable Installation & Config for Digital Trunked Scanning
@@TahoeSteve I installed unitrunker, vb audio and copied dll files to folder, unitrunker is working amazing decoding trunked channels but it's not pairing with dsd+, analog voice works on unitrunker without dsd+ but I'm getting a burst of static after each transmission til someone talks again, can I contact you via email or zello for technical support, troubleshooting?
Hi Steve, I am unable to hear any audio after installation. I can see activity in the DSD plus source audio window but nothing from the speakers. Also there is no logging activity. I see the site info from the station I am trying to receive and it has detected all the channels. I have double checked inputs and outputs in both VCO's. I have installed DSD plus and Unitrunker in different folders, could this create a problem?
make sure the mute is not on.
steve ,..... i had issues with zadig it would not properly install it failed will that affect the unitrunking ? im a total noob with this id think not but im not sure ... zadig just completely froze and would not work the second launch to try .. dumb thing one of my rstl devices isnt working i have 2 but they are different brand but both the same driver i wouldnt think that would matter ... would it ...
cause unitrunk isnt working it only wants to work on one of them
Eric - I have not done this install in a long time but people tell me it works if followed to the letter. One place that might trip you up is if you are not running Win 7, it can be trickier.
[No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it]
again and again. I had this working a while back, but now.. nothing.
Like Stripey Cat the Virtual Cable link didn't seem to take me anywhere to download the file(s). Unlike Stripey Cat I haven't figured it out. Any chance of some help? I'd surely appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Hello Tahoe Steve I am a visually-impaired a blind user of computers is there a video you have that shows how to decode digital radio using hdsdr and DSD thanks
Good evening. Nice videos. I have a problem with "Unitrunker". I downloaded the 1.0.32.7 version. I don't have the display you have with the five Tabs. I only have the "Uniscope" and "Uniform" applications, with the rest of Files (Discriminator, license, and six more ...). I am with Win 10. It installs everything on Program Files X86, Unitrunker file name.
Can you help me with that. Thank you for your attention.
Fred
Right-click the Uniform application and Run as administrator.
ok did it just like u to the letter i can see calls and stuff but no sound calls are coming thru windows 10 2 dongles please help Im pulling my hair out please help I'll even do a team viewer one on one let you take a look in my setting
Johnny D Try increasing your bandwidth
I'll give it a try thanks. I still stand if you want to do a teamviewer and you can take a look it's secure
Muy instructivo. thanks
Glad to be of help!
I can’t get nothing to work I give up I had all the software installed and the virtual cable installed but all I get is humming noise and dsd insnt decoding it just hums
***My dude, I need help! When I install Unitrunker from the installer, the file to open Unitrunker is not there. Where is the actual program file? Where would it be? For you, when you installed it, it showed up in your "radio" folder, not me. How do I get it? HELP?
Look in your Program files (x86)/Unitrunker/Uniform.exe (this is Unitrunker). Click right mouse button and hit "Run as administrator"
Dude in the video just created shortcut to "Uniform.exe" file and named as Unitrunker
Why do I run as admin?
Because Unitrunker is installed in a program files folder and windows is blocking it.
@steve Hello sir can you share working link for vbcable ?
With this much software working together, I have been told that there
are some nuances to the install. I am planning on redoing the series as
an update. Just need to find the time!
( *1 month ago when I was not mad* ) Hey Steve, Nice vids! But I need help. When I try to install unitrunker, the 2nd link thing doesn't show up to run unitrunker. Help?
I am having the same problem. Did you figure anything out?
I guess I'll just use it without trunking right now. I'm disappointed. I wonder if there is another program that could be used?
Doesn't work for me. DSD starts fine, SDRSharp works perfectly, and I've been listening to police / fire for a week or so by "chasing" frequencies around, FM works great and I have a good antenna outside. I cannot for the life of me get Unitrunker to start. Just says "Could not open!". I've reinstalled this a dozen times, used older versions, ...nothing. I have a:
Manufacturer: NooElec
Model: NESDR Mini 2+
NooElec SKU: 100662
Interface IC: Realtek RTL2832U
Tuner IC: Rafael Micro R820T2
Update, I installed Windows 7 (x64), and I got a lot further, but now I'm having trouble getting audio.
This works on Phase 2??

how do you listen through bluetooth earpiece
I would guess that you just pair your BT earpiece to your BT speakers and it should work just as it does out of your BT speakers. I don't have them, so I am guessing. Hopefully someone else will chime in for you.
Hmm the pop up window is not showing after I type in the park frequency
I'm having the same problem. Did you find a solution?
@@brazoon1 no i think i gave up on it and move to sdrtrunk
@@linuxuser1234 Ok, thanks man. Funny enough, I moved over from SDRTrunk after having problems with getting the individual talk groups to work properly and hoped to have more success with unitrunk. Back to SDRTrunk for me as well. lol
@@brazoon1 Maybe you might have better luck with Unitrunker V2 if you want to go back on Unitrunker I haven't tried that version yet
The link for Virtual Cable says Page not found........I`m a beginner and found this to be one of the best step by step guides and have successfully got everything working as far as DSD its the virtual cable link im now stuck with...
Oh!.....its cool....I got it....
Glad you got it. Thanks for your comment.
Thanks for your reply....all up n running just getting the feel of it now.
thanks bro you rock
thanks for watching
Btw, SDS Plus is a type of drill bits used for rotary hammer lmao
I need some assistance
what are the config for one dongle
You can use 1 dongle as long as the dongle spreads the bandwidth range of the trunking stations. A HackRf has a much wider bandwidth, but you can get two of the RTL-SDR's for much less.
i cant edit text to change the name of sdr
Unitrunker keep saying could not run???
or could not open?
@@craigwright7416 I had the same problem trying to open Unitrunker when SDR# was running. Try closing SDR# and then run Unitrunker.
Exactly! use unitrunker with dsd+ and virtual cable NOT SDR#
Anyone else hear static coming through Unitrunker when idle with the squelch on while not having the playback turned on in CBCable?
either reduce your bandwidth or mute the receiver getting the signal
+Steve's 5 C's I found the issue, the Audio Output was for the control was set to my speakers. Although it was muted, the audio went through when it was null. So I set it to unspecified.
Thanks for the reply anyway mate!
RECEIVERS WONT RUN......SAY COULD NOT OPEN?
Did you install the drivers correctly?
i install the rtlsdr batch first.....was there something else i was suppose to do?
make sure youre not running sdsharp at the same time as unitrunker.
I am having this same issue. I have even reinstalled the drivers multiple times. It works fine on SDRSharp but not when loaded on Unitrunker
Thank you Aunt Myke! I was having the same problem, and sure enough DSD Sharp was open. As soon as I closed it, I could start both receivers in Unitrunker. Thank you.
00:34 - 00:36 -,- how to install this, I have only Uniform.exe
www.unitrunker.com/
tottaly BS the unitrunker could not open an dsd+ is starting but never does nothing. with the older version were just a dll and a bat file that were made to an exe and all was working fine...decoding was wham bam Unitrunker just is a pain in the ass if not in the states
Total BS? Shhh, don't tell anyone that I went through all this trouble to make a free video series to show people how to do it wrong.
no i just say that your vid is good only if in the states. try leaving off the radio refference and Unitrunker. do it with one dongle the will get both thumbs up oh and the VC part is needed some detailed instructions...just saying. have a good one!
nadir6661, I'll bet that if you lose the bad attitude and ask real nice he'll gladly give you back double the money you spent purchasing this tutorial. That means he'll owe you precisely nothing. And people say Americans are jackasses?
