Canada imposes financial cap on residential school searches

  • While the Canadian federal government had pledged $320 million for communities to start searching suspected burial sites at residential schools across the country, it is now capping funding at $500,000 on any new searches.
The cap does not affect agreements that have already been signed.
Global's Melissa Ridgen explains why the spending is being scaled back, and how the announcement surprised Indigenous leaders.

If the assertion was that Canadian soldiers were shot by American soldiers and it could be proven by exhuming those bodies then......YES. I'd want that known as a fact that couldn't be denied. A YES with capital letters. An emphatic YES.
We don't even know if they are actually graves and if they are graves, who's buried there. If they are native Canadians, we don't know how they died. That means that the claim that they're children who were murdered by the native school system has not been proven. The claim is no better than gossip and will remain so until proven to be true.

Yet again... money, money, money. It's all about getting money. Having worked closely with native communities for decades, that's all it's ever been about. The abuse of funding and grants is deep in the North American native communities, and investigation into this always invites more claims of discrimination. Sad.

You’re confused. There is no debate on the existence of residential schools, the issue is whether there are mass graves. Of course some people die. And of course they are buried. No one is denying the schools were tragic. The issue is millions of dollars going unaccounted failing to produce any evidence of MASS graves despite a national shaming. The issue is the automatic accusations of racism when people dare to question the narrative. The issue is that truth doesn’t even get a seat at the table.

Oh so what are they searching for if it was not for burial remains? Because now it is inappropriate to expect to find evidence of what the media has been telling us they were both searching for and had found. Now they are saying was never found. Asking questions is inappropriate, but spending money on something we can not ask questions about is appropriate. Even though we as a nation have more important things to worry about like our growing housing crisis. I dunno. I am pretty confused about all of this.
