Tricks is not the reason for being he called Magician, as any pro player can do that. He called Magician for being the only one who always succeed in difficult shot using ziz-zag, even using four side.
He was called the Magician coz he always see shots that other people haven't think about or even saw. He can execute difficult shots and even kick shots. As the great Johnny Acrher said while commenting on a match of Efren, "Efren call fool anybody" with the shot selection he chooses on the matches he played.
He plays with no fear at all, he always feels like he can make his shot and yes he’s the only person who has the balls to do it with big money on the table.
I was always surprised Davis continued to play 9 ball pool with a snooker cue . Ive played both and it was so much harder to get white ball action with the small smaller tip with the heavier white ball .
Fats was more of a showman, wasn't he? Mosconi on a good day vs. Efren would be pretty interesting. There wouldn't be much hotdogging in the middle of it.

He was brought in to help reach a wider audience for pool and to try to make it more popular to a world audience. to raise it's profile and grow the sport. Put him on a snooker table v Davis and he would struggle to take a frame on a professional table. Earl is actually a great player. It’s psychological. He is his own enemy. Earl is an unstoppable machine when he has total focus on the game. I was there when I watched him play Efren in the Color of Money. Both of them were at their best. A grueling 3 day competition. Efren just won by a couple of games. The score was 115 to 113 racks, I think.
