This man is just awesome, I was blessed to be brought up by many like him and didn’t realize how blessed I truly was until I was asked by someone my age how I know so much about so many things. I said doesn’t everyone? I realized I was blessed to know people like this man! Great video!!
Paw Paw. I pulled my chipper apart and the blades where already sharp. I just touched em up. My chipper has been a beast. I changed the oil after 3 h0urs of light use to break engine in. I did have to tighten the the engine mounting bolts, and the bag has came apart at the seams, but thats it. I got about 18 hours of hard use on mine. I will change the oil again at 20 hours. Im very pleased with my Harbor Freight chipper.
I've got a bad back, crushed disc, and feeding the chipper was killing my back because it's so short. I set the chipper up on blocks, safely of course to make sure it couldn't vibrate off, and oh my gosh! Made a huge difference. I can feed that thing for hours, and not hurt nearly as bad. Also, after you run big sticks through the big stick chopper side, you can run those big chips through the hopper to make them really fine! If you have any need for super fine chips. I don't really, but I thought it was cool that it worked.
Right on the money about knowing your machine, no need to have to pay someone to do most of the maintenance and repair when most of the work just requires a little bit of time, I do recommend taking a picture when you start, until you are comfortable in your ability, really helpful, saves trial and error, reading up and watching also, before you even start, appreciate your time, stay safe and God Bless
Great advice all machinery will work better and last much longer if you somewhat understand how it works and the limitations of it and do regular maintenance on it. Oil and grease is cheaper than parts. Thank you for sharing. GW
I just bought one. My wife was going to pay a gardener $350 to trim some tree branches. I figured I'd do it myself and get something out of it. It works well buy has a few quirks: you have to trim the branches to get rid of the forks. I'm going to make something to send the chips straight into a plant waste can. I used to have some 5" corrugated drainage hose that would be perfect. There is enough air blowing out the port that I think this would work.
I just got this machine and tested it out today, I suspected that the blades were probably not very sharp, I will take your advice and sharpen those blades.
Nice video. I love videos like this. Informative, interesting, and entertaining. I'm a former farmer/woodsman, but I've been disabled. Watching these videos really helps me deal with the "I can't" days.
I want to thank you for your video. I went to several places looking for shredder/chippers and HF was the only one i found that had a steel hopper and heavy duty wheels that locked. The blades on the one i bought were sharp and made little uns outa big uns no problem. This machine is just like ya said, worth every bit ya had to spend to buy it.
Just purchased the exact model you have in demo. Very nicely done & coincidentally I also have bamboo that has taken over somewhat. Just need to cut down the stalks, which are mostly 1" - 1,5" max. to minimize the grove and mulch. This was covered in a discussion here. When I started the bamboo only wanted the timber quality species. Now if somebody would like to thin it out and keep the stalks they would be welcome. Located in Pa. Average from 1/2 to 1.5" and from 10 to 20 ft length. Thank you for sharing I feel more confident that this machine will do the job if needed. May give Craigslist a try.
I just fired mine back up after two years. I had shut off the gas and let it run the gas out of the carb until it died on its own. After two years, I turned the gas on, waited a little bit for it to fill the carb and it started up on the second pull.
I should of been more specific. Would like to know if it, in your opinion or others, if it will do a sufficient job of mulching, shredding, etc. bamboo. Max of 1.5" dia.? Stalks will be fresh cut and are 10 to 20 feet in length? What say ye? Any special instructions you or others can post would be very much appreciated. Thank you for sharing. I am a subscribed member.
No doubt about it, the on/off switch had tripped up more people with the Predator engine. If it doesn't crank with the first pull the problem is the switch is in the off position. I too have sharpened the blades on mine. It does make it perform better.
This was a great video, was not very impressed with others who had reviewed this chipper, NOW I know exactly why. A sharp blade is what it takes. Thank you. SUBSCRIBED.
problem with being too sharp is the blades wear down and "chip" their edge too easily, you'll be replacing the blades more often (espeically with hardwoods). Have an almost dull but solid line continuous edge. Check each season before starting, and after every 5 hours of use. Save gas/check oil and don't start the engine until you've gathered 30 mins worth of potential usage (each use about 30 mins, 10'x10'x4' height of pile of 'straight" 2" or less pieces only). Have your toolbox nearby just in case for easy access. Buy an extra engine (vs. new chipper), you'll be glad you did. HF is great on supplying replacement parts--best piece of garden/farm/agriculture eqpt I ever bought. Great Video!!🌳🍀
Mine was razor-sharp when I got it. It snatches right out of my hands! Great little machine but the only thing I wish was better is the main chute hole. It's too dang small and hard to get wiry vines and curvy small branches stuff into. Had mine about 5 or 6 years now and still runs great and done a ton of work for me. Also hard to get gas into but I use a hand pump siphoning hose for that like I do most of my small machines. Saves a lot of work and spillage.
I like HF. It's a good value for your money for most things. Not the best stuff, but usually works well for home use. Been rooked only a few time. (been rooked with snap-on/bluepoint too)
Thank You For taking the time to HELP us all with the tips in your videos..... Here is a TIP for you.... Lube the moving parts of the chipper / mulching wheel with chain saw bar oil or Motorcycle chain lube the real sticky stuff works the BEST.... I could physically feel the difference in the resistance when you are pulling the starter cord..... Give it a TRY Then let me know how much better it works for you....... Have a Great Day.....
as always bob lots of cool info about the machine you are using - how to make it better and why - plus plenty of good advice about safe working and best of all straight forward down home coolness") thanks bob...
My ol'man said to repair something you need to understand; 1 what does it do, otherwise you won't know when it working correctly. 2 How does it do it, kind of hard to fix if you don't know how it works. And 3 Why does it do it that way, you may see another way to do it, but there may be a very good reason this way was chosen, safety, reliability, or dependency on preceding or succeeding operations.
Any updates? I read some reviews on the HF site where the crankshaft broke off allegedly because the shaft is only 3/4” in diameter and there is no outboard bearing to provide support.
Fun fact: 500f or 250c will break down loctite or epoxy. If you have a temperature setting heat gun ($100 on Amazon) you can easily do it, but a hair dryer will probably get it done. I’ve used mine to debond an assembly with orings and there was no damage.
If you have big piles of wood chips you don't know what to do with, and a little bit of extra time, you might wanna think about growing mushrooms! Wood chips are in excellent medium to grow mushrooms in, and if you live near gourmet restaurants, or any place where you can set up a produce stand, you could have a decent little side income, or an alternative main income! Lots of money in mushrooms.
I've heard that wood chips are not very good compost material for growing vegetables in. Maybe if you grow mushrooms for a year or two until the fungi has broken it down into soil first. ... Of course, you might not have been planning to use wood chips, just shredding your garden waste and leaves?
I had already decided to purchase this item. What made me subscribe was the advice and how to take apart and sharpen this tool. My experience is in the beginning of every season is to sharpen and lubricate and it makes a world of difference. Thank you
My MTD mulcher worked OK for awhile, then both the chipper blades broke. I made new ones with a scrap of A2 tool steel and haven't had any problems with those. $0 fix, just like I like it. lol
Better chippers have 3 cutters. 2 cutters is why it yanks the branch into the shoot and bogs down. Not being able to remove and sharpen the blades means that when they're dull. Time to buy another chipper ? I've had 2 other chippers in the past. both had 3 blades and were removable. I still have an extra set. like an extra mower blade.
Thank you for the very timely tips! I am going to Harbor Freight tomorrow to pick on up. I liked and subscribed. God bless and take the best of care! Ps, looking forward to view your other videos too!
I have the previous model (boxed yellow machine) and it works well to mulch except if stuff is damp. So I wait for warm afternoons to do the mulching. I have noticed the blades to be dull also, so that's my next project, and for the so called engineer who designed the yellow model, I'd like to give him the business, since the gas filler is located in the worst possible spot, otherwise it's a nice little machine. Thanks
Liked ur vlog, would of been a'lil more helpful if you showed the disassembly, sharpening and the final results of ur chipper hack, but good start, good content. Keep'm comin'. 👍
Thanks for the advice but I wished you had made the video showing the opening and sharpening of the chipper! That would have been alot more helpful to see it being done.
I wasn't even thinking about youtube when I did the work. But if you have one of these, I assure you, the instructions I gave will be perfectly clear when you begin to take it apart.
Hey thanks for the video! I am looking to get a chipper/ shredder mainly for my thought of shredding bark for flower beds. Doing fire wood and always get a big pile of bark left over. What are your thoughts to using this for that purpose?
Great stuff. Can’t you go overboard sharpening the blades? I assume they’re like mower blades and if you get them TOO sharp they will chip easily. Don’t they work as much from momentum as sharpness? I mean i believe it’ll work awesome for the first hour with sharp blades but what about hour 3 onward?
That's largely the standard for HF machinery. It comes as a great foundation to make a great working machine with a little improvement. The next thing about them are that very often they come off the same assembly line as more expensive name brand machines. By example, My HF bandsaw cost half the price of a JET brand saw. The only differences were a fully covered base and the switch on the Jet was up on the frame and my HF saw had tapped holes in the location of the Jet switch. But, the Jet cost $400 dollars more than my HF which for that matter cost less than $400.
I found the same thing. Harbor freight is just fine if you don't mind tinkering a little bit. Except for the sandpaper. Harbor freight sandpaper is absolute garbage!
Where does this unit blow out the mulch? It looks like a nice system, small and easy to gewt up to feed it, and in a small yard, that's important! What sort of horsepower does it use?
If you are standing in front of the 3" limb chute, it blows to the right. The way I have it set is it would blow at the ground towards the camera. It uses the Predator 212cc 6.5 hp
Great review 👍.. Question I've owned my unit for 3 years.. has anyone figured out an alternative to using the bag? I've search most of the internet and haven't found anything. I use to just blow the chips into a huge pile , but I use this at different properties and was looking for an alternative because the bag fills up too fast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ✌️
I was looking for one of these, because I cut my own firewood and try to use everything down to about 2", or a little less for my small wood stove, then the rest I wanted to chip up . Been looking around, first one I ordered turned out to be a scam site, so waiting for my refund so I can find one I can pick up myself . Harbor Freight is 20 miles away, I can do that.
I have a question. We bought this machine and your video has been a big help. On the left side of the machine under the muffler there is a drain plug like the oil dip stick. I could not find what this is for in the manual and it is not labeled on the machine. I did open it and there was some drops of liquid but it was not oil, nor gas. Do you know? Thanks. And thank you for the information and review.
Thank you. I'll look for it. I have not been able to get my machine started. It has started a few times, but now it won't. I may have to return it. I might be missing the brute strength to pull the starter. However, other machines, mower and tiller, start right up. I have subscribed, liked and tweeted. Appreciate your expertise.
I have noticed that on some of the applications for this engine, the plastic covers have the choke position reversed.... in other words it says flip lever this way to choke and this way to run..... only to find out after exposing the throat of the carburetor that I was not choking it when I tried to start and choking when it finally did, causing all kinds of aggravation !!! Also watch that shut off switch !! And make sure you have it properly filled will oil.... it may have a low oil shutoff switch as well. I know what you mean though, that is a LOT of mass to rotate to get it started !! But check your choke lever position before you give up on it.
I watched for different reason than everyone, it was a facebook suggestion, HOWEVER! your looks & face are a dead ringer for an old former friend, his arms were covered in tattoos, but he was a biker from old days, rode Harleys in the 1940's with my dad, sadly he passed away over a decade ago. but with a log sleeve shirt on, I would be hard pressed to tell difference. now put on a splatter style Sherwin Williams painters hat, lol. anyway have a great one, figured you may enjoy hearing of a person nearly your twin
The hole the brush falls into is not very large. You have to take a stick and push the leaves in. If it is a leafy branch, it will jerk it right out of your hands !!
Basically, turn the bolts into studs, then impact the nuts off. What kind of angle did you grind on the cutters? I do plan on getting one. My house was done 2yrs, so I got about 4yrs work of cutting to clean up.
She has been messing with my voice actuated teleportation device. Do a search on my homepage with the magnifying glass. Use teleportation as the search word. Watch that video. First human teleportation in history.
found small DR chipper shredder similar too at lowes if you could do a review on them too oh i also love the video nice work on the info much more too learn thank bud keep'em comming
Thanks for the info. Btw, I am so glad that that background noise was on your video. It was really unbelievable and I felt like my brain was going to explode. When I paused your video I felt immediate relief. Are those some kind of birds or insects?
I have a lot of Bamboo to cut and get rid of , its all appx 1 inch in size by around 10 foot tall, would this shredder work on bamboo. Nice video.Your like a cool neighbor, with great advice.I see that you can sharpen the blades, but I wonder if there are replaceable, if it came to that.
In response to your actual question...... bamboo is very flexible when green....... would probably work a couple of months after you cut it, but you definitely want to feed it in the 3 inch hole and not the top because of the type of cutter.
I have clumps of this stuff appox 10 ft. across in circles, probably 4 or 5 hundred sticks in each clump, and I have around 15 of these clumps. I guess you could use them for fishing poles, but they are a little on the weak side, not the normal type that is used, I do have some of those also, and yes those go quickly as poles, I have one clump that are around 6 inches across, you could build a house out of those, if you had enough. The Lady who owned this place planted several different types, and it is everywhere, it spreads like wildfire. Seems like everything I buy from HF needs a little tweaking to get it to perform correctly, but normally I get the stuff to operate correctly, Your video helped in that area. Thanks
Old video, you still have the chipper/shredder? I have an old Snapper flail style chipper that still works and would work much better if I could ever figure out how to disassemble the dang thing so I could flip the flail knives over to a new cutting edge...I just cannot get the dang bearing caps off the ends of the axle to get the thing split apart, I tried prying on them, I think I need some sort of puller to get the bearing caps off. I'll figure it out at some point soon and be kicking myself for not figuring it out sooner. The small opening on the side is for chipping, the hopper is for shredding, so yeah it'll only shred leaves, very small twigs, etc....I agree that a 3" branch is too large and should be saved for firewood in the first place...another video mentioned they only run 1-1/2" or smaller diameter stuff through their chipper anyways. Keeping it serviced properly, and knowing how it works, and knowing the limitations certainly extend the life of the equipment.
@@DoingItCheap Awesome thanks, must be pretty decent of a machine...looking at getting one to replace the Merry-Mac from 1973 that I have LOL Its made by Merry-Mac but has Snapper on it I assume it was something Snapper had outsourced and stuck their name on it because I've never found anything else Snapper wise that came close.
@@DoingItCheap thanks...i think it would be good if they made it clear in the setup manual the need to add oil before operation. I've just bought one looked everywhere in the manual for a statement but found none

I wonder who came up with the phrase "common" sense. Good sense seems to be anything but common.
Will it shred palm fonds
no idea
Harbor freight sandpaper is absolute garbage!
are the cheap electric mulchers worth the time ?
Dunno. Never used one.
Great video, very informative and to the point. Thank you
Hi keep up the good work great information thanks
Where does this unit blow out the mulch? It looks like a nice system, small and easy to gewt up to feed it, and in a small yard, that's important! What sort of horsepower does it use?
If you are standing in front of the 3" limb chute, it blows to the right. The way I have it set is it would blow at the ground towards the camera. It uses the Predator 212cc 6.5 hp
thank you, just confirmed me suspicion, my blades need sharpening.
Awesome clip great tip! Thank you
Thanks for the info on the shreader
Great review 👍.. Question I've owned my unit for 3 years.. has anyone figured out an alternative to using the bag? I've search most of the internet and haven't found anything. I use to just blow the chips into a huge pile , but I use this at different properties and was looking for an alternative because the bag fills up too fast. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ✌️
get one of those 40 gallon totes would need a wheels set up
I was looking for one of these, because I cut my own firewood and try to use everything down to about 2", or a little less for my small wood stove, then the rest I wanted to chip up .
The next time I am at my farm I will look. Sorry I can't help right this second. I would appreciate it if you would subscribe !
I watched for different reason than everyone, it was a facebook suggestion, HOWEVER! your looks & face are a dead ringer for an old former friend, his arms were covered in tattoos, but he was a biker from old days, rode Harleys in the 1940's with my dad, sadly he passed away over a decade ago. but with a log sleeve shirt on, I would be hard pressed to tell difference. now put on a splatter style Sherwin Williams painters hat, lol. anyway have a great one, figured you may enjoy hearing of a person nearly your twin
how easy is it to use it to shread leaves? do i need to keep pushing it in or can i just throw it on top and have it do its thing?
The hole the brush falls into is not very large. You have to take a stick and push the leaves in. If it is a leafy branch, it will jerk it right out of your hands !!
How would it do on pinecones?
Worked for me.
Did you put them thru side or the top?
Thank you sir...
Most welcome
Hey PawPaw, thanks for the grest advice ! Thanks for taking your time to makr it ~!!!!!!!!!
Much appreciated information. Thank ya
good job !
Basically, turn the bolts into studs, then impact the nuts off. What kind of angle did you grind on the cutters? I do plan on getting one. My house was done 2yrs, so I got about 4yrs work of cutting to clean up.
I kept the same angle, just touched up the edge.
Thank You Sir for another Great Video!!!
I wish you had shown the size of the chips. Also, do the chips get smaller if you run them through twice? The leaves?
They are plenty small. No, I have never run them twice. The leaves sorta disappear !!
4:30 your dog just teleported!
She has been messing with my voice actuated teleportation device. Do a search on my homepage with the magnifying glass. Use teleportation as the search word. Watch that video. First human teleportation in history.
Great advice thank you.
Hope your back is better paw. Happy's Father Day!
found small DR chipper shredder similar too at lowes if you could do a review on them too oh i also love the video nice work on the info much more too learn thank bud keep'em comming
Thanks for the info. Btw, I am so glad that that background noise was on your video. It was really unbelievable and I felt like my brain was going to explode. When I paused your video I felt immediate relief. Are those some kind of birds or insects?
Birds, insects, noisy neighbors, airplanes, tractor trailers and wind.
Thanks
Charles Miller I DREAM of having that kind of bamboo available.... what state do you live in?
Land O Lakes , Florida
15 miles north of Tampa
I love Florida. I used to have a house in Milton near Pensacola, but I almost froze to death in the winter there about two winters ago and sold it !!
I subbed because I like doing it cheap! Thanks for the videos..
Very well done. Thank you.
I still use it and used it only a few weeks ago.
Does it come new filled with oil?
I don't think ANY Harbor Freight items are sold with oil in the crankcase.
@@DoingItCheap thanks...i think it would be good if they made it clear in the setup manual the need to add oil before operation. I've just bought one looked everywhere in the manual for a statement but found none
I've got one . Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for watching and subscribing !!!
