    The self tapping screw has a different thread. When I went to clean the threads on the unused hole it f'd them up. Hopefully I can chase them back with a correct sized tap and salvage it.
    Edit: 10mm-1.50 tap cleaned it up nice.

    Any advice on how to change the transmission fluid/filter once this is in place?

    • @gzrgldr8288
      @gzrgldr8288 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should still be able to change the trans fluid and filter, but will make it a lot harder to drop the pan. You will also have to hope to hell that you can separate the transmission dipstick tube at the joint, or you are going to have a hell of a time. I have to replace the transmission mount with mine and not looking forward to it. Have to remove the control arms to drop the crossmember, which means I have to try and find jack stands and a jack that will get my un up high enough to be able to shift the front axle around when I reinstall everything. What should be a very simple job is a huge pain. Not sure why they couldn't have separate long arm mounts independent of the crossmember like other manufacturers.

Not only will I have to remove my rock sliders to get that bolt in for the side bracket, I will have to cut off and re-weld the one end of my rock slider because it is mounted right in the way of that side bracket for the new cross member. Guess that's what I get for making my own...

    Great vid but Instead of pushing your driveline out of whack to line up the mount you need a 97+ transmission mount, they are centered and line up with the rough country centered crossmember. Pre 97 had offset trans mounts

    • @matthewjcobb
      @matthewjcobb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude, 2 years later and your comment just saved me so much headache. I've been scratching my head all night trying to figure out why my trans mount doesn't line up with the holes in the Rough Country crossmember. I spent so much more money to get the long-arm keep my suspension geometry right, and went with the slip yoke eliminator, and the cv rear drive shaft. With all that focus toward keeping things lined up correctly, it just seemed crazy to me that I'd need to tweak my drive train that far, and I wasn't comfortable with it. I had no idea they switched bolt locations in the later models until I read this. (Mine is a '98 but it must have been a holdover year because it uses the older style offset bolts) Also, I think it's crazy that RC doesn't say anything about that in their documentation. Thank again.

    • @MrMrsregor
      @MrMrsregor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      so, you attached the trans mount to the cross member and then installed the cross member with trans mount already bolted up ?

    • @matthewjenkins4505
      @matthewjenkins4505 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrMrsregor Yes. With the crossmember bolted in place first you have to move the trans around and I could not get it to line up. I bolted the crossmember to the trans first then bolted the crossmember to frame. It was much easier to maneuver that way. Of course all of this was after cutting, drilling and tapping at least one bolt in the rusted frame.

  • @MrChucknorrisaurus
    @MrChucknorrisaurus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm going through this install myself actually. And I gotta say please do not use the self-tapping bolt to clean the threads. That bolt has a 1.75 pitch and the correct bolt is a 1.5 Meaning it might technically work but those threads are thinner because of it and more likely to pull out. If you need to clean it, take one of the old crossmember bolts and use that, or tap it and chase the threads with a 10mm by 1.5 pitch tap.
    Also, if you're a good inch or more off from where you need to be with the transmission mount/cross member. You can actually unbolt the mount from the transmission and turn it around to move it either left or right about an inch. That's because it's asymmetrical. Just some things I thought I should share. Take care.

    • @moejr14
      @moejr14 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrChucknorrisaurus so I f’d up and used that bolt to clear out the non-used hole. Now my bolt just spins and doesn’t get tight at all. What can I do?

    • @MrChucknorrisaurus
      @MrChucknorrisaurus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moejr14 You may not like this but you'll have to do a bit of customization. Buy a metric tap and die kit. Try to tap it with the 10mm x 1.5 pitch tap, you can watch videos on how to use it if you're not sure.
      If that doesn't work then you'll have to drill it out with a 10mm drill bit (or imperial equivalent) so that it's one size larger and tap it for a 12mm bolt. It can be a 1.5 or 1.75 pitch tap. It can sound rough, but the internet and others at the hardware store can help you pick out the right bolt, tap, and drill bit. Good luck

A subframe welded to the factory frame rails allows the ease of installing by fabrication any bracket, brace, whatever u want to attach attach it to the subframe. To kill a 2nd bird the sub frame will double as a frame stiffener

    Hey please don’t try removing the “stud” using double wrenches, that’s an easy way to hurt your diy self. By the time he went and got the wrenches I would have it cut off with any type of grinder available It’s a small stud size easily cut off in like 2 seconds Orrr you can hurt yourself with a improper use of a tool

      And once he cut off the stud flush with the frame, how is he then supposed to remove it so he can place it with the new threaded bolt for the crossmember? If someone listened to your advice, they'd end up having to drill out the remnants of the old stud and hopefully still be able to retap it. The advice you're offering is not a solution for this problem and it's going to screw someone who's in the middle of doing their own install.

      @@wsgregory Oh come on. Your "time saving" tip is to cut off the old stud haul out a welder (assuming they have one and know how to use it properly) and weld inside a frame with few or no access holes?
      I'm sorry, I just don't see how that's any better than just using a wrench. You don't have to like his way of doing it, but it worked, and he didn't get hurt.
      Now, if someone DOES have the ability to weld, welding the nut to the stud seems like a way better solution that hacking the thing off and the doing damage control. That's exactly how I did mine, but I'm not going to tell anyone their way was wrong.

      @@matthewjcobb yep it two seconds to do that and you should be a welder/fabricator if you diy your Jeep at this level If your not, well you run into problems like this that are easily handled by one who can fabricate that’s right

      And yes it takes in parentheses two seconds to do that OK two minutes big deal can’t be a whiner like that
