This song was magical for me in the sixties and still is. Sadly this wonderful man passed away from cancer in February at the age of 76 , but his music will live on forever. His name was Gary Brooker.

well said Arthur, this was Gary's magnum opus, he spent his life honing this and he performed it with such passion and precision you'd have to be in a coma not to be moved emotionally.

Rest in peace to the legendary Gary Brooker. My dad always loved this song and it was his favorite, when he found out Gary died earlier this year he was pretty upset. 3 days ago, he passed on from this life as well. I hope they’re both resting wherever they may be and in eternal peace

Fuck cancer.... fuck it right to death. It's the worst bullshit we have to deal with, our own bodies killing us. And why? Because we're too fucking perfect to function properly genetically. One minor malfunction and my I'm left alone raising two children being 22 years old... I did that well but no man being called home from a war zone should ever be called home because his wife died with the best healthcare in the world at her aid and no one even fucking spotted a sign before.

The famous guitarist/singer/songwriter Peter Frampton once stated that 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' was the most perfect song composed and recorded. As an author and musician, I have to agree. From the lyrics to the composition to the gradual build-up and dramatic conclusion, this ticks all boxes and a hundred more. To write such a beautiful song the author concerned was definitely emotionally and intellectually invested.. Long Live Procal Harem!!!

This song was a Hodge podge of lyrics loosely tied together by the kind of lifestyle a band in the 60s experienced rolling through sex, drugs, and rock n roll - and became an unofficial anthem to life in the mid to late 60s. It was freewheeling and melancholy at the same time. Art and music were everywhere, and because of the Vietnam War - a feeling of inevitable doom when the party was over permeated through the just-of-age young people of the era. The lyrics and music bring back that kaleidoscopic sense of time and place making it a worthy anthem of a past that is still vibrant in the minds of those of us who lived through it. This performance by Gary Brooker was close to the last time he performed this song and with the biggest live orchestral performance yet by a man who knew his time on this planet was limited. As you can see and hear - he put his heart and soul into this performance. It is almost impossible to imagine that A Whiter Shade of Pale will NEVER be sung or performed like this ever again. And I can empathize with your heartfelt response. To those who loved the party, I wish everyone loved the trip, their own adventure, their own journey to face oblivion with the same intensity of life the musicians of that time period have done.

I was ten years old in 1967 when this fantastic song first was released. So I guess I must have had a quite advanced taste for music at so young age. Because this is not just any song, it´s a masterpiece. And I loved it from the first time I heard it. My big brother bought the vinyl single and sometimes if I were lucky I was allowed to listen to it in his room. But this version is not just a fantastic performance, it´s pure magic. The violins, the quire and I really think Gary Brooker sings even better here. Despite of the fact that it had been 39 years since it was new. It ought to be a human right for every person to be allowed to hear this marvellous song. Says a semi-old man from the north of Sweden.

Procol Harum released this song in spring 1967. I was 21 and leaving England for France, boarding a ferry in Dover for the cross channel trip to Calais. Shortly after we left Dover, I was standing at the stern of the boat watching the white cliffs fade in the distance against the blue of the channel waters. Music was playing on the ship's loudspeaker system. Suddenly, the organ refrain of A Whiter Shade of Pale began. For four joyous minutes I was transported to a timeless nirvana - the music, the sea, the fresh air, the sun. I have a body memory of that experience. Whenever I hear the organ, I am back on that ferry. I close my eyes and I smile.

It was the late 70s when I first heard this song on the radio. It was late at night, cruising home from a night out. Alone in my '71 New Yorker doing about 20 over the speed limit. Done when we were fighting the Viet Nam war. We saw violent things But there was a Whiter shade of pale. A brighter shade that death didn't show.

My neighbor was a friend of his asked him what the song was all about. The answer he got really stunned him: I have no idea! I wrote it while I ate cereal. Such a masterpeace.

He was being a wee bit disingenuous. There’s a bunch of Canterbury Tales references bookending it, for example. But yeah, it’s a bit like asking what an abstract painting is “about”.

I used to slow dance to this song, in 7th and 8th grade Catholic School from the fall of 66 - 68. Everytime I hear this song the tears begin to fall. It reminds me of my late wife now.

When the Beatles first heard this in a London night club, they all thought it must have been Stevie Winwood.

I remember this song in my youth and man did we have great music in the 60s and 70s. The groups had to play instruments ,and write songs to be notice in those days or you weren’t noticed.

In 2006 this old Aussie was 48 & I would have loved to be in the crowd at this concert. I've been singing along with Whiter shade of pale since the late 60's... Just love it.
