I think Sylvia Plath would be rather charmed by Florence Welch and her Machine. Both of their works constantly bring up themes such as the extremities of emotions (be it boundless joy or crippling sadness), personal regret and fear of making more mistakes, the freedom of which art gives them, and their experience of womanhood. Their language is also very similar, being elegant yet holds undeniable power. Descriptive, telling a story/scene through their words.

I agree, but I honestly feel like Emily Dickinson would be more of a Florence fan, and Sylvia would probably be into Mitski (especially Bury Me at Makeout Creek)

I really hope so but after this marvellous video essay, I have a strong feeling that she does. I'd be very pleased to see more juxtapositions like that on booktube. And I think Susan Sontag would enjoy Lorde's music, maybe hang out with her and write a chapter for the "Against Interpretation Vol.2" or "Against Interpretation: Revisited" or something. I'd love to read it, well in general life would have been better with Sontag still living, still writing, still rocking.

I love everything about this! Can you do a video for us non-lit majors on how to identify themes in books? Been a big reader all my life, but I struggle to dig deep into the books in an analytical sense. I've read all these books but they never hit me deeper than the surface 'story' level. I am a singer-songwriter and a huge book lover, and how you have broken down words from Lorde and put it in parallel with passages from George Orwell is fascinating to me. I like how you think!! What is amazing to me is how you can compare books & a writer’s philosophy from a different era to something so contemporary. And I believe that it also give us insight into the lyrics of a “pop” singer who many may have “sloughed off” because the lyrics “don’t make sense”. You challenge us to look a little deeper into all forms of writing...which is a good thing!! Kudos👏👏

Would Karl Marx have listned to ABBA?
In Money, Money, Money, Agnetha and Frida position themselves as women from the proletariat. They have big dreams but are incapable of fulfilling them because, even though they work hard, they don't seem to get enough money to survive and, so, must resort to finding a wealthy man to survive in this capitalist world.
In The Winner Takes It All, they sing "The gods may throw the dice/Their minds as cold as ice/And someone way down here/Loses someone dear" indicating that humans are naught but puppets for the gods (or billionaires) to play with.
In Voulez-Vous they sing "And here we go again, we know the start, we know the end
/Masters of the scene/We've done it all before and now we're back to get some more/You know what I mean", clearly singing about the proletariat rising up to fight the capitalist overlords so yeah, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid, I know what you mean.
Also, the mental image of Karl Marx getting down to some Mamma Mia is just way to good.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk

I can't believe I just watched a 20-minute video about comparing George Orwell's writing to Lorde's music and I'm honestly so glad I did! Your arguments are so well thought out and very well presented. This video was a delight. It also made me super interested in listening to Lorde so thanks for that. :)
To answer your question, I think Ian McEwan and Zdena Salivarova could enjoy some Two Steps From Hell. Their music is either full of energy which would fit Salivarova's characters or super weird which I think describes McEwan's novel perfectly.

This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on booktube! Not only do I now want to read more Orwell, but I want to listen to more Lorde. This is so incredibly researched and backed up. I feel like I’ve learned a whole lot.
Also...you’re so good at explaining the ideas in this in an accessible way? I often find literature analysis can go over my head and I often think that can be down to the way in which people explain it - which has a danger coming across as patronising. By that I mean I often see this level of analysis as being for people who study or have studied English lit, but I really found this so refreshing. It provided context, example and was so conversational. Plus...you’re hilarious, your brain is a fascinating place.

I think Anne Carson would probably appreciate George Watsky’s commitment to remixing old stories to find new resonances?? Magnificent video essay ✨

omg this is probably my favourite video you've ever made. what a concept. I don't ever film videos but I want to make one just so I can create my own video on this topic. my favourite artist is twenty one pilots and my favourite author is J.R.R. Tolkien...............the question of would he enjoy their music is going to consume me for a while now. XD I might end up writing an extensive blog post on the subject! Thanks Ariel, love you!

I have never read anything by George Orwell yet I loved this video. I do consider Lorde one of the best, if not the best, songwriter currently. So I love this. Thanks Ariel! Also I don’t know if you knew this but Melodrama is set in a night out. It’s supposed to be a song for each stage of thought when she’s at a party.

Such an interesting but fascinating perspective on Lorde and Orwell. I definitely want to read more of Orwell with Lorde in the background now :D
And Writer in the Dark is always killing me... so intense but beautiful.
Thanks for the vid and the throwback to Lorde (i really need to revisit her music).
