    • @colbybrand5326
      @colbybrand5326 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@erici8750 Why say that? I've been doing this work for over 20 years and in business for about 12. We do not do as much paver work because we focus on decorative concrete, but I was thinking, man, he is lucky to have that Sam guy. An employee like that is a unicorn in these times where the construction economy has an about 1% unemployment rate. That dude does a great job and the owner manages his guy well. I'd hire them in a second and I am a really picky person when I sub, so much so that I usually just do it myself. But guys that go around saying, "why did you do this?", "You should do that", etc. are usually hacks. Don't get me wrong, there is good constructive criticism and I still learn from people when I hire new employees. As a matter of fact the first thing I do when I get a new experienced employee is data mine the hell out of him and I always learn new things. This owner has good knowledge. A lot of stuff he does I already know and do myself, but its nice to hear someone else say it. Like I said, the hotshots who know it all never work out. I know if I guy is correcting my practices in the first couple weeks he works for me, its not going to work. At first I'd get excited thinking, this is great, this guy has ideas and he must be confident, then 100% of the time, he totally fails. Everyone that shakes their head and says, you should be doing this, that or doing this differently is working for me. Therefore, they are not doing what they are telling me, which is fine, but at the end of the day, I am their boss so I must be doing something right. I used to give these people a lot of room and I found that they always produce inferior products doing it "their way". You sound like one of those hot shots. Let me guess, you have about 10 companies on your resume in the last five years? You shake your head and roll your eyes all day at work, because you could do it so much better? This owner probably is not trying to run a paver company that turns out 2000 sqft a day. The fact that you can't see that is a testament to your knowledge of the industry. I got competitors in my area who pour 5000 sqft of concrete a day and I am usually only comfortable with under 1000 sqft. I spread the pours out, use a lot of cold joints and control my product. People pay me a lot more per square foot to lay concrete and that is not saying anything bad about my competitors. They also have great companies, just a totally different business model. Could I adopt that model and work for builders pouring 5 driveways a day? Yeah, I am sure I could, but that is not my business model nor is it something that I would enjoy doing. At the end of the day I guarantee this dude is crushing it and pretty happy with his output. Again, I have about 15 to 20 employees that work at my company at any given time and I would be stoked to get an employee like that Sam guy. As well I'd be happy with the quality and speed that two crew members were able to do.

      You could do it George. I mentioned on earlier video that a relative sent me a Dirt Monkey paver video from three years ago to explain how they laid pavers without explaining how to do it. I did hire for the excavation, but I also worked as a laborer for their crew during it, ran everything from a shovel to laser level to plate packers. I watched how the pavers were laid in after I got my base layers done and the correct drain directions for water flow away. Still have the 2x4 with a level taped to it that i used to screed the sand over two aluminum poles, not more than an inch deep as Stan says. I had no clue prior to doing it, but it is done, looks great, and I take way my pride in seeing it than I would have if I paid someone else to do it for me. I built a pizza oven over the last year as well. No masonry experience, watched a lot of videos (mike haduck of PA, old time mason is my favorite, he never lets a job make him worry) asked a lot of questions from people who work as masons or have done it as part of contracting etc in the past, and I am very happy with the results. You could try a small spot first then when you got it down, go for your patio or whatever you want to do. Early forties, never did any of that work before, but with some instruction, and not being afraid to ask questions or see if and or when I screwed something up, it turned out great. One other thing is offer to help someone else building their project first. You can get a feel for things, compare to what you see it out on the web or from asking local professionals and gauge your project from there. I am actually itching for a new project for next year, depending on what the country and economy looks like. If I were you I would go for it. Also you never know, your son may actually enjoy it, or at very least feel enabled when he is older to take on a project he might not otherwise have the guts to try.

    • @MrCAcompora
      @MrCAcompora 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn’t say “watched how pavers were laid in, it was watching the layers of the lifts of base material (crusher run in the north east). The excavator guys did not want anything to do with pavers. They also did it differently than Stan and my relative, using stone dust as well as more than inch of stone dust depending on how things were compacted.

    “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” reminds me of Berlin’s “new” airport, just opened last month, originally supposed to open in 2009 (i think), but kept getting delayed. A month or so before it supposed to open originally, several crucial systems failed the inspection. One of those was the fire alarm system. Now in an effort to still open on time, the owners proposed hiring 800 people to stand around and act as, and i quote, “fire spotters” the government said no (not surprisingly) They even had to replace all the displays as they were left on the entire time.

      @@Dirtmonkey here’s another video of theirs on what i can only describe as the biggest oversight/what could go wrong story in modern history th-cam.com/video/Bb60YUkEtwk/w-d-xo.html. The town would burn the trash in the land fill every year, as you did in 60s. the only issue was that, this year the land fill was next to/on top of an opening to old abandon coal mine.

    One critique if I may be so bold - please take with a grain of salt. At the garage back door and leading to the shed entrance, I would have rounded those corners of ther parkway rather than 90s. Just my 2 cents - outstanding job! RT-75 is absolute bad ass too. I look forward to hearing what you think of it :D
