    Back in the '60's I worked at a gas station. A regular customer had a Rambler American sedan and he always wanted his oil checked. It was always a fight to get the hood closed after checking the oil. He complained that we didn't know the correct way and one time he got out of the car to show us how to close the hood. His method bent the hood at the hinges. He was furious but since he did the damage, we weren't responsible. He said he was never coming back and roared off. A few days later he was back with a hammered out hood adorning his Rambler. He never wanted the oil checked after that.

    After all the years, I finally know why most square bodies had kinks in the hood. Keep up the good work 👍

    Well Bob, I am very happy I looked at this video of yours. I learned a couple of very valuable lessons. 1st, I never knew why GM engineered that weak point in the hood and 2nd, I'd never even paid attention to that pin at the back of the engine bay or the holes in the hood. Many thanks fr a very educational video! Keep up the good work sir!

    Great video. Remember seeing those taco hoods back in the day. Back in high school I remember the father of a good friend of mine had a Scottsdale and it was loaded, leather, a/c, chrome out the yazoo. Remember watching the gas station attendant closing the hood after checking the oil and the hood just folded in half. That was not a pleasant ride back to my friend's place.
    Look forward to seeing more on the old C10. Be safe and stay well.

    Remember that MGB? There were three accidental bend spots in that design: Both strut locations, one in the hood and one at the trunk lid. But the most fun one is at the mirror location in each door. The doors were designed to minimize body flex so the hinges and the strike pin were both reinforced. Where does the stress go? Well, the body skin takes a bunch of it. But when you drill three holes for the mirror, you weaken it just enough so that, over time, the stress creates a vertical tear right there. Simply welding the skin won’t get it. You must weld in a thicker backing plate about 4” square. Problem solved.

    When you close those hoods it helps if you push the hood in towards the cab and wiggle it till the spring pressure releases slightly then pull it down, instead of just pulling it straight down from the get go.
    Lubing those hinges like bob says is critical too.

    if I remember correctly It was a stress design crumple zone and so in event of accident the hood will buckle before the rear of the hood comes back in the windshield and the core support moves the bolts hold the hood in place in event of accident and if people would oil the hood hinges and push in from the center toward the firewall rather than pull down they actually shut much easier.. usually without buckling but a way to fix them is a stiffener plate that bolts on at the hinge with the hood bolts and it extends about 3 inches towards the front of the hood. the stiffener plate needs welded to the hood and the sides the link pinch needs reworked and welded or it won't shut right or sit flat.

  • @funfun5656
    @funfun5656 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Best way to fix these hoods is to get rid of the hood and get you a fiberglass one lol. I remember my dad's old C10 we were out on the frozen lake coming home from ice fishing and the wind was so strong and the hood so worn that the hood latch came undone and the hood snapped clean in half...flew right over the car fortunately. We replaced it with a piece of Plywood with bondo overtop to match the body lines using the original hinges.
    Truck is still together as a farm vehicle 20 years later lol. I imagine the reason the original broke was they used too stiff of steel for what is supposed to be a compliant panel with some give. Too much carbon in their metallurgy.

    It didn't take long for the hoods to kink. I'm pretty sure GM offered braces not to different from your angle iron. Maybe they were aftermarket, but I recall just a piece of flat stock about 2 ft long and a couple of inches wide for each side.

    Back in the late seventies and after that they used to sell brackets That bolt over the Is crumble zones they work pretty good but like you say you gotta keep them hinges In my opinion all vehicles need their hinges oiled now and then those old trucks I probably had 15 or 20 those they are a problem But back when I had him you could find them in junkyard anywhere 25 bucks
